Ewe/J! 1 1 WWW UNITED STATES RALPH W. WILSON,
OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
SHAKER TO]? OR GAP.
Application filed May 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of'the borou h of Manhattan, in the city and State 0 New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaker Tops or Caps, (Case 1,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel shaker top or cap which will be practically powder tight, which will be very easy to manipulate and which will be inexpensive to manufacture and attractive in appearance.
A further object is to provide a shaker top or cap in which the shutter member is held frictionally between the inner and outer perforated top or cap members and mova' ble to open and close the perforations in said inner and outer members, the location of the shutter member giving a much neater appearance to the receptacle to which the topor cap is applied and also protecting the shutter member from injury and from exposure to dust and dirt.
A further object is to provide a shutter member which is held in position by friction, thereby eliminating the necessity and expense of riveting it to the top or cap or of providing a separate spring.
A still further object is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts whereby the device is materially simplified and rendered more effective for the purposes intended.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents in side elevation a portion of a receptacle with my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the top or cap on an enlarged scale, a portion of the outer top or cap member being broken away, the shutter member being shown in full lines in its opened position and in dotted lines in its closed position.
Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 2. L
4 Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the shutter member of the top or cap.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 379,857.
The top or cap may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material capable of being formed into the required shape. This top or cap comprises the inner perforated top or cap member 1, the outer perforated top or cap member-2, and the interposed shutter member 3, which shutter member is held by friction between the said inner and outer top or cap members.
, The perforations 4 in the inner top or cap member 1 are always in alinement with the perforations 5 in the outer top or cap memher 2. The interposed shutter member 3 1s provided with perforations 6, which are arranged to be bought into and out ofalinement with the perforations 4 and 5 as the shutter member is moved to its opened and -closed positions.
This shutter member 3 is herein shown as rotatable to a limited extent, the means for turning the shutter member'back and forth between its opened and closed positions being shown as a finger piece 7 which projects through a slot 8 in the side wall 9 of the outer top or cap member 2. This side wall 9 of the outer top or cap member 2 overlaps and is firmly secured to the side wall 10 of the inner top or cap member 1.
The inner top or cap member 1 is provided with a circular depressed portion 11 for receiving the shutter member 3, the raised peripheral portion 12 of said inner top or cap member snugly engaging the inner face of the outer top or cap member 2, except at the point where the slot 8 is provided in the side wall 9 of the outer top or cap member. Here the raised peripheral portion 12 is omitted for a sufficient distance to permit the swinging back and forth of the finger piece 7 of the shutter member to turn the shutter: member into its opened and closed positions. This feature makes a powder tight connection between the parts, which is of great importance.
The means which I have shown for yieldingly holding the shutter 'inemberindts ter member is turned to its opened or closed inner member having a raised peripheral position. 4 The inner top or cap member is portion, engaging the outer member and a sufiiciently yielding to permit the passage depressed central portion forming a seat of this projection 13 across the face of the for the rotatable shutter member, the inner inner top or cap member 1 from one of the member pressing the shutter member against depressions 14 to the other depression 15; the outer member, the said shutter member It is obvious that various changes may be being provided with a finger piece projecting a powder tight joint therefor.
resorted .to in the construction, form and through the side wall of the outer member, arrangement of the'several parts of my top the said raised peripheral portion of the or cap without departing from the spirit inner member havinga break therein of a and scope of my invention; hence I do not length suflicient to permit the movement of wish to limit myself to the particular emthe shutter member and the finger piece, the bodiment herein shown and described, but depressed portion and the said break in the What I claim is raised peripheral portionof theinner mem- 1.
