DEVICE FOR LOADING GASOLENE IN TANK-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1921.
Application'flled December 23, 1919. Serial No. 347,009.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS N. RUTHERFORD and EMETT H. RUDOLPH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Oilton, in the county of Greek and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Loading Gasolene in Tank-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to facllltate the loading and unloading of gasolene and similar inflammable liquids with reference to tank cars of the type now in common use as a precaution againstaccident due to exposure, and to this end the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in p the accompanying draw ng, wherein:
F igure 1 is a sectional view of the dome of a tank car equipped'with apparatus embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the's'amehe apparatus is preferably installed in duplicate in the dome 10 of an ordinary tank car indicated at 11, said dome being provided with the usual center plug 12 to permit of the gaging of the car, and the object in mounting the apparatus in duplicate as shown at A and B is to make it possible to connect the car with the rack regardless of which end of the car is forward, and thus to avoid the necessity of specially positioning the car or of reversing the same in order to bring the apparatus into operative relation with the rack. Obviously a particular description of one of the devices will sufiice for both.
Extending through an opening 13 formed in the top of the dome is a threaded nipple 14 provided at its upper end with a halfunion 15 for connectlon with a complementary half-union on the supply pipe for the rack (not shown) and connected with the inner end of said nipple is a two inch standard T 16 having on the running side a short nipple. 17 carrylng a two inch standard cock there is arranged another short two inch ni ple 19 connected with a two inch standar cock 20 which in turn communicates with a nipple 21 merging into a four inch by two inch reducer 22. The
cars for arrangement in the four inch pipe 23 in turn communicates with a four inch standard T 24 which is extended lengthwise or longitudinally of the car.
By means of the apparatus described, the car is filled from the bottom, the outlet of the feed pipe represented by the above described nipples being near the floor of the car, and as the stop cocks 18 and 20 are located within the dome, access may be had thereto through the dome opening covered by the plug 12 without the inconvenience of comlng in contact with the liquid contents of the car, and while the stop cocks 20 may be closed, after the car has been filled, to prevent direct communication between the interior of the car and the outside air through the filling pipe, the stop cocks 18 may be opened to permit of the escape of or undue accumulation of gas at the top of the dome, and hence reduce the liability of displacement of the plug 12.
In order to guard against the objectionable vibration of the lower end of the filling tube chuck blocks 25 are preferably arranged between the same and the bottom of the car and are connected by links or straps 26.
What is claimed is:
1. A filling apparatus for gasolene tank cars adapted for arrangement in the dome of such oar adjacent to the center plug and consisting of a pipe disposed in an upright position with its inlet above the top of the dome and its outlet adjacent to the bottom of the car, said pipe being provided at an intermediate point with a cut-off stop cock and above the plane thereof and also in communication with the filling pipe with an outlet stop cock. I
2. A filling apparatus for gasolene tank cars for arrangement in the dome of such car adjacent to the center plug thereof, the same consisting of a vertical tube havin its inlet end provided with a half-union a ove the top 0 the tank dome and at its lower end with an outlet T adjacent to the bottom of the car, said tube being rovided at an intermediate point with a re ucer, and above the same and within the dome with a cut-off stop cock and an outlet stop cock.
3. An apparatus for filling (gasolene tank o'me of such car adjacent to the center plug, the same conits outlet disposed adj acent to the bottom of I sisting of a tube having its inlet end locatecl with an outlet stop cock for relieving gas dome and pressure.
In testlmony whereof slgnatures.
THOMAS; N. RUTHERFORD. EMETT H. RUDULPH.
