1 DEVICE For; SAFEL-Y' s ToR Ne INnLAMMAnLE L'IQiIIDS.
Application filed February 3, 1912; Serial No. 675,236;
i cit whom 2'25 may concern) 1 i v n ill-if it known that I, CARL lVL-urrmi, a sub- 'jectof the German Emperor, and resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented. certain 5 new and useful Improvements 111 Devlces for Safely Storing lnfla-mmable Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices. for safely storing gasolene. and other inflammable the medium of a pump working with the as-' sistance of a relatively heavy pressure liquid (inert or neutral liquid).
A specific embodiment of my invention is shown in the. accompanying drawing,
which isa diagrammatic elevation, with parts in section.
In this particularconstruction, the gasole'ne or other inflammable liquid f is contained in a'receptacle 1, closed except as to the pipe connections specified hereinafter, The cover 2 carries the gasolenede'livery pipe 3, which leads-to the place of consumption or withdrawal, for instance the draw faucet 4. This faucet and the delivery pipe are surrounded by a jacket 5 properly spaced from said pipe and faucet. The an nular jacket space does not communicate with the interior of the receptacle 1.
5 The neutral or inert liquid a (which should be heavier than the liquid f) is con tained, for instance, in an open receptacle 6, from'the lower part of which a' suction pipe. 7 leads to the liquid-conveying pump 8 (of any suitableconstruction), the delivpipe 3, at any suitable point.
The liquid a should be inert, that is to say, it should have'no action on the inflammable liquid f; in-the case of gasolenc, the inert liquid 12/ may be Water.
. In thejoperation of the device described above the. pump 8' will draw some inert liquid or from the receptacle 6 through the Specification of letters Patent.
ratenteaiua 7, 1912.
pipe 7 and will force it i'ntothe receptacle 1 through thepipe 9. Since the inert liquid a is heavier than the-inflammable liquidif, the latter will float on top. and thus, the transfer of inert liquid to the receptacle 1,- which originally is full of inflammable liquid, will cause the inflammable liquid to be forced into-the delivery pipe 3,. so'a's to reach the faucet 4 ,or other place. of use.
During this operation the branch pipe 10,
communicating with the suction pipe 7, will become filled with inert liquid up to the the pump 8.
' Should a break or leak occur at-any point of the jacket 5, air will enter at such point level of the suction valve or suction port of I v '7'communicating there'witln Thiswill in- -terrupt almost Immediately the jconveylng action of the pump 8, soth'at no further supply of inert liquid at will be drawn from the receptacle 6 and transferred to the receptacle 1 through the pipe 9. The raising of the inflammable li uid f in the delivery pipe?! will therefore' also be interrupted. Thus noinflammable'liquid f can escape through the leak or break'in the -jacket5. even ifthe delivery pipe should be injured at the'same point; in this latter case, any liquid escaping from thepipe 3 will trickle down on the outside of the pipe and collect above the p r It ,will be understood that I ,do not restrict myself. to the specific construction cover 2, between the jacket and shown, as' various .modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my inventioii as set forth in the appended claims. t j
I claim:
1.- A device for the safe storage of inllaur mable liquids, comprising a closed receptacle for the inflammable liquid, a delivery pipe leading therefrom, a receptacle for an inert liquid, a pump'p'rovlded wlth a suction pipe-connected with the last named receptacleand with a delivery pipe'lead ng to the first-named receptacle, a jacket sur-- rounding the delivery pipe. for the inflammable liquid and formingtherewith a space shut ofi ,froin the'interior of the closed re its ceptacle, and a permanently open connec tipn from the said space to the said suction- I pipe.
2. A device for the safe storage of inflammable liquids, comprising a closed receptacle for the inflammable liquidQa delivery pipe leading therefrom, a pump having a suction pipeconnected With a supply of an inert liquid, and a delivery pipe-leading to said receptacle, a jacket surrounding the delivery pipe for the inflammable liquid and ing with said suction plpe.
forming therewith a space shut off from the interior of said receptacle but communicat- In testimony whereof I have specification the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
