T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, county of Howard, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves and more particularly to that class known as globe valves, although it will be understood that the invention may apply to other forms of valve equally as well, the prime feature of the invention residing in the provision of a diaphragm which is anchored across the neck of the valve body and is attached to the valve stem, said diaphragm forming a perfect seal for the neck of the valve body and consequently dispensing with the usual form of packing at this point.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a seat in the neck of the valve body and a locking ring for cooperation therewith, which parts are so constructed that the edge of the diaphragm passing be tween said parts will be curved or bent to conform to the shape of the seat and face of the locking ring.
A further feature of the invention is in so mounting the valve stem that it will have sufficient flexibility of movement that the valve proper may readily and positively enter its seat, and practically eliminate all chattering or clacking sounds, prevalent in valves of this class under certain conditions.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the'accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the valve structure.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a locking ring removed from the valve structure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the valve structure, which is in this instance, of the globe variety, said body having a neck portion 2, an inlet opening 3, an outlet opening 4 and a partition 5, as is usual in valve structures of this type.
Formed through the partition 5 is a seat 6, 'for the valve proper 7 said valve being attached to the inner end of a stem 8, which stem projects outwardly through the neck portion 2, the valve 7 being preferably rigid with the stem.
Attached to the stem 8 at a point between the valve and the outer end of the stemis a diaphragm 9, which fits in the neck of the valve structure and its edge rests against a seat 10 formed interiorly of the neck 2, the
bearing face of said seat being preferably rounded so as to present a curved surface to the face of the diaphragm resting thereagainst.
In order to clamp the edge of the diaphragm securely against the seat 10, a looking ring 11 is threaded into the neck 2, the inner edge of the ring directing sufficient pressure against the diaphragm to form a seal at this point and to form a nonleakable joint, the engaging edge of the ring 11 having a curved groove circumferentia'lly thereof which causes the edge of the diaphragm to bend over and assume the outline of-the seat 10. 2
By securing the diaphragm in this manner, the requirement for a packing around the stem at this point to prevent leakage is dispensed with, thus materially adding to the value of the valve structure.
Fitting over the outer end of the neck 2 is a cap 12, the central portion thereof being provided with a bore 13, in which is rotatably mounted an interiorly threaded hub 14 of a hand wheel 15, said hub having a collar 16 at its inner end which enters a circular channel 17, in the cap 12, thus holding the hand wheel against longitudinal movement, but permitting free rotating movement thereof.
The outer end of the stem 8 is threaded and these threads engage threads in the hub 14, and it will be readily seen that when the hand wheel is rotated in one direction, the valve 7 will be closed and when rotated in the opposite direction, will be opened, the closed end of the hub limiting the opening movement of the valve and its stem.
In assembling the parts of the valve structure, the cap 12 is removed, the valve 7 entered in the body 1 and the diaphragm clamped against the seat 10 by the locking ring 11, the ring being turned inwardly a suflicient distance to bend the edge of the diaphragm over the seat 10, the outer face of the diaphragm entering the curved groove 18 in the end of the ring. The hub of the hand wheel is then entered into the cap 12 by inserting the hub through a slot 19 until the opening in the hub is in line to receive the end of the stem. The hand wheel 15 is then rotated and screwed on to the stemuntil the cap is properly seated over the end of the neck 2.
By constructing the valve structure in this manner, a packless, nonleakable device is produced and by mounting the valve and its stem in the manner shown, a more or less resilient action will result which will permit the valve proper to accurately seat and all chattering action will be eliminated.
, The invention claimed is:
A valve structure comprising a body portion having a valve seat, a neckportion on saidbody having a rounded seat substantially circular in cross section, a metallic diaphragm entering said neck, a locking ring threaded into said neck above said diaphragm, the inner end face of said ring having a curved groove for bending parts of the diaphragm over said rounded seat and forming a non-leakable joint, a stem centrally of and integral with said diaphragm, and a valve integral with the inner end I of said stem adapted to engage the seat in said body.
