To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, CHARLES MARKHA CONDER and Gonrlinr TWYNAM ViviAN, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both residing at Camborne, in. the county of Cornwall, llngland, have invented a certain new and useful Vibratory-Jaw Crusher, (for which we havefiled an application in England, dated January 24, 1020,) of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to crushing machines in which the material, such as stone or ore, to be crushed is fed between a pair of jaws, and crushed by the mechanical vibration of the jaws. The present invention has for its object the elimination of vibration in the machine, and this is accomplished by arranging two jaws so that both will be moved simultaneously toward and away from one another. By directly opposing all the crushing stresses the vibration of the machine will be reduced. Certainother improvements have been introduced which will be hereinafter more fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein i.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the sides of the machine which may be either in the form of steel plates or in the form of castings of suitable design. The sides 1 are fastened together by means of suitable tiebolts 2 with pipe distance sleeves 3 inserted between the plates. At the upper end of the sides are mounted coupling blocks 4 for securely holding the pivot shaft 5, which is prevented from rotating by wedge bolts 6 passing through slots in the shaft 5 and thus forcing the side frames 1 securely against the shoulders on the pivot shaft 5. The other pivot shaft 7 also carried by coupling blocks 4, is mounted in slide blocks 8 running on slides 9 fastened to each side plate 1. These slide blocks 8 are drawn toward, and adjusted relatively to the coupling blocks 4 by means of tension screws 10. The strength of these screws is preferably such that they fracture in the event of any hard uncrushable substance getting in the ma chine, and therefore provide for a limit of safety. One vibrating jaw casting 11 is mounted at its upper end on the pivot shaft, while its lower end is lengthened and carries a roller 12 mounted injournals 14 attached to webs on the jaw casting 11. Near the upper end of the jaw casing 11 is provided a suitable recess for accommodating the corrugated. or channeled hard crushing jaw 15, wedge bolts 16 being employed for securely fastening this jaw 15 to the casting 11. The upper end of the other vibrating jaw casting 17 is mounted on the pivot shaft 7 while the lower end thereof consists of two arms 28 or extensions of narrow width between which the lower end of the j aw casting 11 can move. At the lower end of the 2117111528 a roller 18 is mounted in journals 19 attacl'icd to the said arms. The rollers 12 and 18 roll against the opposite sides of a double acting cam 20, mounted in journals 21 provided on the side frames 1. On the ends of the cam 20, which are extended beyond the side frames 1, are mounted flywheels 22. To prevent undue wear on the cam 20 one roller 12 is made of respectively narrow width in relation to the width of the cam, whilethe other roller 18 is recessed so as to form two wearing strips rolling against portions of the cam with which the roller 1.2 does not engage. In this manner the cam will not be liable to be worn out as quickly as when both rollers engage therewith on the same surface. The vibrating jaw casting 17 is provided with a recess to accommodate its hard corrugated or channeled crushing jaw 15 which is arranged opposite to the correspondingjaw 1.5 mounted onv the casting 11, and is securely fastened in position by wedge bolts 16.
In order to prevent the rollers 12 and 18 jumping off the cam 20 in the event of a sudden fracture of the material which is being crushed, a hook belt 23 hooked through a hole in a web on the swing jaw casting 11 and, the threaded portion of the bolt passes through a bar 29 formed on the arms 28 and a compression spring 24; is held against this bar 29 by means of a collar 25 against which bear a nut and locknut 30 screwing on the bolt 23. It will be understood that the tendency of the spring 24 is to pull the lower ends of the swing jaw together, and to insure that the rollers mounted thereon roll against the cam 20. Cheek plates or side wearing plates 26 are arranged on the swing jaw casting 17 so as to prevent the material from being pressed out laterally, while the crushed material is discharged down the back 31 of the swing jaw casting 11. The side frames 1 of the machine are supporter by cast feet 27 securely bolted thereto, and secured to the foundation beams 32. lhe swing jaw members 11 and 17 may be formed of side pieces, preferably of steel, to which are secured castings for the pivot bearings and for the reception of the hard crushing I jaws 15 Such a construction would be advantageous for transport in certain foreign countries, where'it is necessary to have the heaviest members composed of parts as light as possible. The hard crushing jaw plates 15 are preferably of tapered cross section, as shown, so that they could be reversed with the thinner or thicker end lowermost according as to whether it was desired to have a large or small discharge opening at the bottom of the jaws. The upper ends of the jaws would then be adjusted correspondingly by means of the tension bolts 10.
It will be understood that when working, the cam-shaft 20 is rotated by means of a belt working on one or both flywheels 22, and consequently the double-acting cam forces the rollers 12 and 18 apart, thereby causing the hard crushing jaws to swing toward each other, on the pivot shafts 5 and 7, thereby exerting a crushing or squeezing pressure on the material fed between the jaws. It will be appreciated that the resulting stresses due to the crushing operation with such a construction as described will be equal and opposite on each jaw, and that as 0th jaws are moved mechanically toward each other during the crushing period, the stresses will be taken up on the opposite sides of the camshaft, thus eliminating any bending moment thereon. understood that when the are balanced as described, the vibration is minimized so that lighter foundations are required, while the wear and tear on the machine are also reduced.

A crushing machine comprising a frame, crushing jaws pivotally mounted in said frame rollers carried one by each of said jaws, a cam engaging said rollers so as to spread said jaws apart at intervals, said rollers being so constructed that one roller bears against one portion of the cam on the rotation thereof, while a second roller bears against a portion of the cam which is not brought into engagement with the first roller, means for rotating said cam, and means for drawing the crushing jaws together.
2. A crushing machine comprising a frame, a plurality of jaw frames pivotally mounted at their upper ends in said frame, forked arms at the lower end of one of said jaw frames, the lower end of the other jaw frame being adapted to pass between said arms, bearings at the lower ends of said jaw frames, rollers mounted in said bearings, a cam mounted in said frame and adapted to rotate between said rollers, means for rotating said cam, means for drawing the rollers against the cam, and crushing jaws mounted in said jaw frames.
3. A crushing machine comprising a frame, a plurality of jaw frames pivotally mounted at their upper ends in said frame, means for adjustably com'iecting together the upper ends of the jaw frames, forked arms at the lower end of one of said jaw frames, the lower end of the other jaw frame being adapted to pass between said arms, bearings at the lower ends of said jaw frames, rollers mounted in said bearings, a cam mounted in said frame and adapted to rotate between said rollers, means for rotating said cam, crushing jaws mounted in said jaw frames, a bar connecting together the two arms, a bolt attached to the lower end of the other jaw frame and passing through said bar, and spring means acting on said bolt to draw the rollers against the cam.
