.To all whom it may concern .Be it known that .I, THOMAS vCUsAoK, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headplates forSignboards; .and I @do hereby declare {that the fol-lowing isa full, clear, and-exact descriptionthereof, referencebeinghadto the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference -marked thereon, which form :a part of this specification.

Thisv invention relates to improvements in head plates for signboards, and consists of the matters hereinafterdescribed and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the case of signboards, bill boards, bulletin boards, and otheriboards bearing ad vertising matter, it is customary and-desirable *for the proprietor and lessor of the board, who is also usually the one who applies the advertisingnor-other matter to the board, to show his nameon :a :name plate, either separate from or made a part of the board, to identify both his ownership of the board and also the origin of the work on the board.

It is desirable that the plate or imprint containing the name of the owner or lessor of the board be made up in quantities to be held on hand ready for use when a signboard is erected, this being required both for ease in erection, and also for general uniformity in the appearance of the imprint.

Separate head plates or head pieces, capable, by suitable means, of ready attachment to the top of a signboard, have been heretofore used, but such head plates, while possessing many advantages, are objection able in that the imprint is presented as a separate and distinct part or addition to the signboard, which detracts from the unity of the signboard in its esthetic effect as a whole.

The object of the present invention is to provide a head piece adapted to bear an imprint containing the name of the owner or lessor of the board, which piece is so designed and constructed that it is not only quickly and easily attached to the signboard, but when attached, it will become such a part of the signboard, that it will continue and bear out the artistic panel effect sign.

being ready for instant and easy attachment, when arsignboard is erected. The advantages of the'invention will appear as I proceed with my specification.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view' of the top part of a signboard with my improved head plate or head piece attached and in place.

Referring now to the drawings indiproved head plate or head piece. The signboard is of simple character, comprising upright end posts 12, 12, and an intermediate panel 13. The panel 13 is outlined at the top by means of a horizontal bar or strip 14.

strip 17 of the same'thickness as the thickness of the bar or strip 14:, and an imprint plate 18, preferably of sheet metal, which is attached at its upper edge to the bar 17, and which depends below the bottom edge of said bar. The bar 17 is of a length adapted to fill the gap 16, and is provided along its top edge with a molding 19. identical with the molding 15 on the sign. Said molding is continued along the ends of the bar 17 by parts 19 19 which depend below the bottom edge of the bar 17. The molding parts 19, 19 and the molding piece 15 at the gap 16, are cut to fit, as by a miter joint 20, so that when the strip 17 is brought to rest on top of the strip 14: of the sign, the molding parts 19?, 19 will engage the -;catesasignboard, and 11 indicates the imfront face of the strip 1 1 and join the mold ing 15, so that the molding on the head plate will bridge the gap in the molding on the sign and produce a continuous effect.

To the back of the strip 17 of the head plate, are attached upright bars or plates 21, preferably three in number, namely, one at each end and one in the middle. Said bars depend well below the bottom edge of the bar 17, and are adapted for engagement with the back face of the sign to which they are attached in any suitable manner, as by screws or nails.

WVhen appliedin the manner described, the imprint plate 18 will engage the front face of the bar 14:, to which it is nailed. The imprint plate 18 is made of such Ver tical dimensions that when in place its bottom edge will lie somewhat above the'bot tom edge of the bar 14, as shown in Fig. 1. When the head piece is applied as de scribed, it will manifestly become such a part of the signboard that it will carry out the intended panel effect of the bar 1 1, and will present the imprint plate 18 inthe band or border presented by the bar 14, and this'without destroying or detracting from the'unity of the panel effect defined by the bar 14.

I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a signboard, which includes a panel and a bar defining said panel at the top, an auxiliary head-bar, a plate attached to the face of said head-bar and depending below the bottom edge of the same, and narrow, vertically extending bars secured to the rear face of said head bar, said head plate and vertical bars being adapted to engage and to be secured to the opposite faces of the top bar of the sign.

In combination with a signboard, which includes a panel, a bar defining said panel at the top, and a molding extending along the top edge of said bar provided with a gap intermediate its ends, an auxiliary headbar, a plateattached to the face of'said head-bar and depending below the bottom edge ofthe same, a molding extending along the top edge of said auxiliary bar and having vertical parts at itsends, and narrow, vertically extending bars secured to the rear face of said head-bar, said plate and vertical bars being adapted to engage and to be secured to the opposite faces of the top bar of the sign, and said molding of the auxiliary bar being constructed to bridge the aforesaid gap in the molding on said top bar and to fform'a continuation of the same. 4
