Description

L KING AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER BROOM.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.29, 1919. 1,384,722. Patented July 12,1921.
UNITED STATES LEONARD KING, OF LUTON, ENGLAND.
AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER-BROOM.
Application filed December 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEONARD KING, a sub ject of the King of England residing at Luton, Bedfordshire, in the kingdom of England, have invented new and useful. Automatic Sprinkler-Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sprinkler brooms carrying water tanks, and my object is to provide a manually operated broom of this character in which an air pump causes an intermittent water spray to be delivered well ahead of the broom; a feature of the invention beingthe automatic operation of said pump by a pivoted cranked lever touching the ground or floor and receiving an impetus at each forward sweeping action of the broom.
I attain my object by the combination of the means which I will now describe with reference to the annexed drawings in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are a front and side elevation respectively of the broom; Figs. 3 and 4: show to a larger scale a rear elevation and plan respectively of the middle portion of the broom. I
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view through Fig. at showing the division of the tanks.
is the broom having three communicat ing tanks Z) for holding liquid, and c is the air pump provided with a piston or plunger 0 for discharging the liquid from the tank Z) through a nozzled. The tank is divided into three compartments b b 5 and the pump or the central compartment Z2 is fitted with non-return valves 0, e which allow the liquid to flow into the pump. Filling orifices b are also provided for filling or replenishing the compartments 6 and b3 as and when required.
The rod 0 of the plunger 0 is connected Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Seria1 No. 348,178.
to an arm or lever 7 which is pivoted at f and at its other extremity forms a forked member 9 carryinga wheel or roller g for making contact with the floor or surface over which the broom is moved, the arrangement being such that as the handle or stail a of the broom is pressed downward in the action of sweeping, the wheel or roller 9 is forced rearward on the floor to cause the plunger of the pump to descend and discharge a supply of liquid through pin-holes in the nozzle (Z. The return movement of the plunger 0 is effected by a spring or springs c which come into action when the pressure causing the wheel or roller g to be forced into contact with the floor is removed.
Supporting wheels 72 are also yieldingly mounted one at each end of the broom to support or take the weight off the bristles of the broom, thus, when pressure is brought to bear on the broom in the act of sweeping, the resistance of the springs 2/ will be overcome to permit the bristles being brought into close contact with the floor, while the roller and forked member 9 will cause the pump to be operated to discharge liquid from the compartment 6 of the tank 5.
I claim:
A manually operated broom means provided on the broom for carrying water, a force pump carried by the broom, a pivoted cranked operating lever for said pump with the lower end near the surface being cleaned,
a contact roller carried by said lever near' the lower part a spray head at the front of the broom and means establishing communication between said head and the pump, and yielding supporting wheels at the ends of the broom, as herein described.
' LEONARD KING.
