To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTURO MNDER Y BARRI, a citizen'of the Republic of Cuba, and resident of Habana, Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification. Y.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets; and its object, stated briefly, is to provide a device of the character indicated, the valve element of which is constructed and arranged in a manner to form a watertight joint immediately with the wall of its seat without requiring the employment of the usual washer, and to accommodate itself to irregularities in the aforesaid seat wall due to wear or other causes.
An embodimenty of the invention is illustrated in the` accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the improved faucet.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental detail view of the valve and its operating element, the valve being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the valve.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l indicates the body portion or casing of the faucet, which is divided interiorly by the partition 2 into inlet and outlet passages 3 -and 4, communication therebetween being provided by a vertical opening 5 formed through said partition.
Above and in line with the opening 5 the body 1 is formed with an interiorly-threaded, open-ended neck 6, whose diameter is somewhat greater than that of said opening; and through this neck there passes a vertical stem or key 7 which is provided at its upper end with a cross-piece or handle 8 and is connected at its lower end with the hereinafter-described valve 9. Adjacent its latter end, the stem is formed with an enlarged portion 10, which is externally threaded to engage the internal threads on the neck 6; and from this enlarged portion 10 extends a depending shank or projection 11 of reduced diameter, the terminal or free end of the Shank being made rounded or hemispherical, as shown at 12, and being provided with a few threads 13 immediately above the rounded portion. The valve 9 1s made hollow, and is provided at its top with a'threaded opening 14, the diameter, of the opening being the same as that of the threaded portion 13 of shank 11, so that incoupling the shank and valve together` the said portion 13 will first engage the valve threads 14 and then disengage the same and pass on into the interior of the valve. The bottom member or wall of the valve has a hemispherical socket or depression 15 formed 1n its upper face to receive the ball-shaped end 12 of the shank, thereby providing a universal pivotal connection between the two parts which permits a limited rocking or tilting movement of the valve in any direction; it being understood that the threaded opening 14; in the valve is sufficiently larger in diameter than vthe shank to enable such movement. The valve is adapted to seat against an annular rib or shoulder 16 formed at the upper edge of the opening, the lower portion of the valve being slightly enlarged, as shown, and provided on its under face with a central dished portion or recess 17.
By reason of the ball-and-socket connection between the valve and shank, it will be apparent that the valve will be capable of rocking in any direction about the shank as an aXis and, in consequence, will accommodate itself to surface irregularities due to wear upon it or upon the seat 16, or to faulty construction of either of said parts. Hence it follows that when the valve is screwed down, it vwill form a joint of the requisite tightness with its seat, while rendering unnecessary the use of washers between it and the seat to effect such joint.
The neck 6 may be closed by a cap-nut 18 of any suitable type, having a central opening for the passage of the key or stem 7 therethrough, a leakage between the cap and neck being prevented by an interposed washer 19.
I claim as my invention:
A faucet, comprising a body portion; a partition therein having a valve seat; a hollow valve coperating with said seat and having a hemispherical socket formed inthe upper face of its bottom wall; the upper wall of the valve being provided with a threaded opening; and an operating element for rsaid valve having a reduced lower portion,
one part of which is threaded, the diameter of such threaded part being equal to that of into the interior of the valve; the terminal of said reduced portion being rounded for eoaetion With said socket to permit a universal rocking movement of the Valve rela- 10 tive to its operating element.
