TOOL FOR HEADING HOGSHEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed August 10, 1920. Serial No. 402,539.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoMMIn PUREFOY lVA'rsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the county of Wilson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Heading Hogsheads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hogshead or cask headers or re-headers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, eflicient, easily applied and 0perated tool for forcing heads into barrels, casks, etc.
The invention consists of the structure, arrangement and combinations of parts as herein after more specifically described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof in which like reference characters denote like parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the device to a tobacco hogshead. 7
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of the device partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4- is a sectional View taken on the line 4-41 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, a lever 1 is provided at one end with a metal member 2 bent to pass through a transverse hole in lever 1 and to be secured therein by a nut 3, a loop is formed by this member where it emerges from this hole and from this loop it extends along the top of the lever and extends beyond its end in a pointed prong 19. Adjacent the end of the lever it is further secured thereto by a hook bolt 5 which also passes through the lever and is secured thereto by a nut 6. Pivoted to the loop of member 2 by a bolt 9 is a link member 7 having ears 18 at one end, adapted to straddle said loop and at the other end ears 17 set at" right angles with prongs 18 and adapted to pivotally support by a bolt 11 the equalizing bar 12 having holes 13 at each end. Secured through the holes 13 of the equalizing bar are two short chains 14 to the end of each of which is secured a hook 15 having a downturned nib 16.
Obviously, this precise form of structure may be varied as circumstances require and the present invention is not limited to the exact form shown.
In operation the barrel head B is placed in barrel A with one edge in engagement with the groove commonly provided for its reception and not shown in the drawing. The hooks 15 are placed over the opposite and protruding edge of the barrel head with the nibs 16 in engagement therewith. By then holding lever 1 in a horizontal position and with chains 14 suspending it against the side of the barrel point 19 may be readily stuckinto the barrel to afford a fulcrum. By forcing lever 1 downward suflicient pressure is brought on the barrel head 8 through link 7, yoke 12 and chains 14 to force it readily into position as desired.
What I claim is:
1. A barrel-header comprising a lever, having a pointed prong at one end, a link pivoted to the lever and spaced from the point carrying end, an equalizing bar pivoted to the link, and hook members for engaging a barrel head pivotally connected to the equalizing bar by flexible members.
2. A barrel-header comprising a lever, a member passing transversely through said lever and secured thereto, then bent into a loop and extended along the lever and beyond its end into a pointed prong, means to secure the pointed end to the lever, a link pivoted to the loop, an equalizing bar pivoted to the link, chains carried by the ends of the equalizing bar and hooks having down turned nibs carried by the chains.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ROMMIE PUREFOY WATSON.
