PATENTOFFICE.
ONE-HAL]? r0 RAY Y. CLIFF,
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it lmownthat I DELTA B. HOWELL, a citizen of the United tates, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saggars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saggars such as are used in the manufacture of plates, saucers and other pottery or china ware, and
the objects of the present invention are to provide an individual saggar in the form of a refractory ring for each plate .or other similar article, the rings being placed one upon another to form tiers, suitable engaging means being provided for the rings of each tier in order to position the rings one upon another, certain of the rings being provided with interlocking means for engaging with corresponding rings in adjacent tlers in order to hold the tiers of saggars firmly together and prevent their falling over during the drying and burning operations, and as above stated are usually accomplished by a continuous movement of the trucks carrying the saggars through tunnel kilns.
The usual practice is to place the green ware' in saggars usually made of considerable height so that 2. tier of dishes or the like can be placed in each saggar for drging and burning, the saggars containing t e green ware being placed upon trucks for drying the ware and then placed in a kiln for burning the ware, the trucks carrying the saggars of dry ware being usually passed through a tunnel kiln for burning the ware.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, showing how the saggars are assembled upon a truck;
Fig. 2, a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3.,an enlarged plan view of one of the interlocking saggars;
Fig. 4, a section through the same;
Fig. 5, a plan view of one of the individual saggars;
Fig. 6, a plan view of a modified form of interlocking saggar;
Fig. 7, a section through the same;
Fig. 8, a plan view of another modified form of interlocking saggar; and
Fig. 9, a section through the same.

The individual saggar rings indicated by the numeral 1 are provided upon their upper faces withthe concentric annular ribs 2 and upon their lower faces with correspond- 1ng annular grooves 3 the groove ofeach ring receiving the annular rib of the next lower ring in order to position the rings of each tier one upon the other.
Interlocking rings 4.- such as are illustrated in detail in Figs. 3'and 4, are located at intervals in each tier, each of these-interlocking rings being provided withthe ribs 2 and the grooves 3 and with suitable interlocking means around its periphery such as the T-shaped lugs 5 and the corresponding 1T-sha7ped sockets 6 formed in peripheral ugs Each of the saggar rings is provided with the usual pins 8 which support the ware within the saggar in the usual manner. A plate or other similar article of green ware is placed in each of the rings and the rings are placed in tiers as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the interlocking rings being located at suitable intervals in each tier and interlocked with the similar rings. in adjacent tiers, thus positioning the rings of each tier one upon the other and connecting the several tiers together in a manner to prevent their falling over sidewise due to the movement of the trucks through the kilns.
In Figs. 6 and 7 is illustrated another form of interlocking means which may be provided upon the interlocking rings, the saggar rings 9 being provided with the peripheral lugs 10 having ribs 11 upon their upper faces and with lugs 12 having grooves 13 therein arranged to receive the ribs 11 of adjacent rings.
Still another form of interlocking means is illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 in which each ring 14 is provided with the peripheral lugs 15 having projections 16 thereon arranged to engagethe apertures 17 in the lugs 18 of adjacent rings. I
In practice the saggar rings are stacked Patented July 12,1921. Application filed March 26, iezomseriaino. 368,849.] Y
