JOHJI W. ETGHELLS, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK T-RACK AIND COAT-HOLDER.
Application filed March- 8, 1921.
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Racks and Boat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat. racks and coat holders, which are adapted to hold the hat in a 100p of wire through which the crown of the hat is passed, and also to providea hook which serves as a support on which a coat or other garment may be hung; and my improvements are directed particularl to means whereby a simple device combining both these advanta es may be formed from a single piece '0 wire which is doubled and twisted upon itself as hereinafter explained, so as to secure the results desired, details of the improvements being hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved device, showing the outline of a hat in broken lines as being held therein; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showingitattached' to a section of a wall or other backing; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the article.
The same parts are designated by similar reference numerals in all the figures.
The rack is formed of a single piece of wire,.which is first bent so as to constitute a loop, 1, which is adapted to receive the crown of a hat, as shown in the drawing.
The wire is then twisted upon itself and bent down, as at 2, and then laterally as at 3, so as to make the loop stand ofi from the backing to which the device may be secured, thereby allowing space for the him of a hat to hangv free between the loop and the back- 1 without touchin the latter.
e strands of t e wire are then bent down, parallel to each other as at 4, and'- re-curved upon themselves to form a hook as 5, after which they are brought up behind themselves, as at 6, and are twisted together as at 7 and next spread out angularly as at 8, and then extended upwardly and provided with suitable holding loops, 9,
through which loops fastening elements as.
10 may be passed.
It will be seen that by means of my im-- provements I am enabled tomake out-of a single integral piece of wire, a' device which Specification of Letters Patent.

wire, which provide the hook with a smooth and non-chafing surface upon which the 100 of a coat or other ortion of a textile article ma be hung WlthOllt abrading it; and the dlsposition of the strands of wire forming the hook being such that the weight of an article hung upon the hook will tend to draw the upper strands of the hook down inside of the lower strands, and to thereby draw them in more snugly against the back strands of the hook, and the hook backing counteracting any tendency of the hat support to bend outwardly or downwardly from the back members 6,7, 8 9. i I
' The twisting together of the two wires at 7 prevents .the opening or spreading of the hook elements, while the angular disposition of the untwisted ends at 8, 8, afiords a wide bearing for the device against its backing, thereby preventin its swin ing from side to side; while its looped ends 9, 9 affordattachment holes for suitable securing devices, as screws 10, 10.-
' It is preferable to e tend the ends 9, 9
above the plane of the loop 1, or to terminate them below that plane, so that there may be a free line of approach for the screw-driver or other toolwhich is used to drive the' securing'elements 10, 10, home..'
I have illustrated and describeda preferred form of no 'im roved hat rack'and coat holder, but wis it to be distinctly understood that the details of its construction might be modified, as by the use of mechanical equivalents, from the spirit of my invention as c aimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of theUnited States, is
1. A hat rack .and coat holder formed of a single piece of wire, having a horizontally disposed, closed loop f adapted, to surround the crown'of "a hat, a four ply, untwisted without de arting hook, a two ply, offset and twisted lo0pshank extending from said loop to said hook, a two ply, twisted, back section ex- 1 tending away from said hook, and free ends with fastener receiving means.
2. 'A hat rack and coat holder formed of l a single piece of wire, having a, horizontally disposed, closed loop adapted to surround the crown of a hat, a four ply, untwisted hook formed of parallel strands, a two ply,
to saidhook, a two ply, twisted, back sec tion extendingaway from said hook, the
free ends of the wire being bent-laterally in opposite directions and thentoward each 15 other and terminating in fastening receiv-' ing loops.
