To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. KIRGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phillipsburg, Warren county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spray-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spray heads for spraying liquids such as water, for spray ponds or any other desired uses, as for instance, lawn sprayers, fire extinguishers, gas treaters, condensers and the like, in which a wide and substantially uniform distribution of the liquid is desired in the form of nely divided spray.
The primary object of the present invention is to enable the discharge of the liquid from a plurality of discharge openings in a spray head to be simultaneously regulated and controlled in a. simple and eilicient manner.
To these ends the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional elevation of a spray head,
Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig; 1 showing the shape of the outer spray head shell,
Fig. 3 is a similar detail view on the same section showin the shape of the inner spray head body, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section of a spray pond having a plurality of spray heads.
Referrin to the drawings, A represents a suitableV ase adapted to be connected to the frame B as by means ofthe bolts C and provided with the inlet D for liquid.
The spray head is adapted to be supported on and suitably secured to the base A as by means of the pins or other fastening devices E. This spray head which forms the principal subject matter of the invention, comprises an outer shell having discharge openings and an inner longitudinally movable body also having discharge openings coperating with the openings in the shell. Means are also provided for moving the inner controlling body longitudinally in the shell in order to simultaneously regulate the quantity of liquid issuing in streams through the discharge openings, in the shell and body.
The outer shell, in this instance, comprises a plurality of separated rings F connected Vby longitudinal outwardly extending ribs G,
which also have the function of breaking up the films formed by the issuing sheets of liquid. The inner body in this instance is composed of separated rings H connected by longitudinal inwardly extending ribs J.
The inner movable body is shown provided l with a ca or end portion K connected to the ribs or formed integral therewith if desired. As the inner body is moved longitudinall the discharge openings L between the rings of said body coperate with the discharge openings O between the rings of the shell and regulate the discharge of liquid. The angles of the issuing streams are preferably so regulated that they are not parallel and do not interfere with each other.
Any suitable means may be provided for moving the inner body longitudinally, and in this instance a stem P is connected to the cap K as by means of the nut Q and slides in a bearing R in the base A. A bell crank `lever S is pivoted at T to the frame B and one arm of said lever is connected to the stem P as by means of the pin U and slot The outer arm of the bell crank lever S may be connected to be actuated in any suitable manner as by means of the actuating rod W shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 4; a spray pond is illustrated having a plurality of spray heads adapted to be simultaneously adjusted by means of the actuating rod W connected to the bell crank levers S and controlled by the hand lever X. The inlet pipes D of the spray head as shown are connected to the liquid supply pipe Y.
The advantages of the construction shown and described, reside in the fact that the discharge openings in the spray head are readily and simultaneously controlled and regulated in accordance with the requirements and the pressure of the liquid. Furthermore, the supply head is easily cleaned by opening the discharge openings to their full capaclty.
I claim:

A spray head for spraying liquids, comprising an outer shell composed o separated rings connected by longitudinal outwardly extending ribs having circumferential discharge openings formed between said rings, an inner longitudinally movable body also having circumferential discharge openings adapted to coperate with the openings in said shell, a cap on said inner body and a stern operatively connected to said cap 'for adjusting said inner body longitudinally in the shell to simultaneously Aregulate the quantityof 4liquid s'suingin steamsthroughY Ysaid discharge openings,
