HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED .lULY 14, ms.

IN VEN TOR PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. EHRLIGH, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J nne 28, 1921.
Application filed July 14, 1919. Serial No. 310,647.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. EHRLIQH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Bu chanan and the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in ll'inges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges and in particular to that class which may be applied to heavy doors and which are adapted to swing the latter into a normally closed position when free from restraint.
My invention has for its object the construction of a hinge which shall be so de signed as to close a door to which it is ap' plied or secured by the weight of the latter.
lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description is set forth in detail, the invention resides in the novel construction. and arrangements ot' the parts hereinafter described. y
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation oi my hinge. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pintle and Fig. i is a sectional view taken through the upper end portion of the pintle.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a plate which is secured to a door casing in the usual manner by means of screws or bolts which pass through the openings 2. The plate 1 is also provided with a pair of horizontally extending lugs 3 spaced apart a suitable distance and having circular openings l extending therethrough. A strap 5 is provided having a plurality of openings (5 through which screws or bolts are passed to secure the former to a door. The inner end of the strap is formed to embrace the pintle 7 to which it is rigidly secured by means of the pin 8 so that movement of the strap will at the same time rotate the pintle, the latter being journaled in the openings l in the lugs 3.
A helical groove or way 9 is formed on the periphery of the pintle adjacent one end and extends from approximately the middle of the latter to one end. a set-screw 10 is positioned in an opening in one of the lugs and is adapted to have its inner end in contact with a metallic ball 11 which is positioned in said openmg, as shown in the drawings. The ball is at the same time positioned at a suitable distance in the groove or wav formed on the pintle and is held in that position hv the set-screw described. I
It will be noted that the lugs are spaced apart a suitable distance so as to permit movement of the strap in a vertical plane between the said lugs upon rotation of the pintle when the door is opened or closed. it
will also be noted that when the door is in an open posltion the latter is in an elevated position with relation to thetloor and that the end of the strap is away from the lower lug. When tree to move the door will swing to a closed position by reason of its weight and the. turning ot the pintle in contact with the hall and the retaining sot-screw.
Claim:
A hinge which includes a plate and horizontally extending lugs having alincd holes therein. a strap of appreciably less width than the distance between the lugs, a pintle extending through said holes in the lugs and rotatable therein, and to which one end oi the strap is secured, the pintle having a helical groove or way at one end thereof, one oi the lugs having a threaded hole in registrv with the groove or way in the pintle, a metallic ball positioned in said hole and extending into the groove or way and a set screw screwed into the threaded hole against the metallic ball.
