' UNITED STATES HAIR-TIN PATRI' IMIQ, OF LODI, NEW JERSEY.
. CELLULOID BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed February 8, 1921. Serial No. 448,369.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PATREMIO, a citizen of the United States, residing atv Lodi, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Celluloid Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to buttons and has. for its object to simplify and improve the construction of buttons made of celluloid or other similar materials. A special object is to provide improved means for ornamenting such buttons and at the same time reinforcing or strengthening them.
The invention contemplates the formation of a button with a recess in its face to receive' an ornamented panel. The ornamentation on the panel may be widely varied, and in assembling the panels and buttons, a panel bearing any desired decoration may be selected to go with each button. Furthermore, the panel is preferably provided with a flange at its edge to engage the walls of the recess in the button so as to reinforce and strengthen the button structure.
' The invention will be first hereinafter'described in connection with the accom anying drawings, which constitute part 0 this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to des ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a reverse view of a button constructed substantially in accordance with this invention and drawn to a somewhat exag erated scale.
ig. 2 isa front view of the button as shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of said button.-
The button is preferabl made entirely of celluloid, or other im' ar material,- an comprises a rear member 1 having a flange {around its edge, and a front member 5 having a flan e 6 overlapping and suitably secured to sai flange 4 of the rear member,
and fitted in said recess,
as by cement, or the like. The rear member 1 has its central portion pressed out to form a shank 2 which is fprovided with openings 5 for the passage 0 thread used in attachmg the button to a garment.
he front member 5 is formed with a recess 7 in its face, and in said recess is fitted a decorated panel 8 having an inwardly turned flange 9 at its edge to fit snugly within the walls of said recess. The panel may be secured in place by any suitable means as by cement placed between the flange 9 and walls of the recess 7. The panel, when inserted in the recess, is preferably flush with the front surface of the button, but the flange 9 and walls of the recess serve to strengthen and reinforce the button. To further reinforce the button structure the front member 5 may be corrugated, as at 10, between the recess and marginal flange 6.
It will be understood that the. panel 8 may be ornamented in any desired manner, the particular design 11, illustrated in Fig. 2, being simply shown by way of example. While the button illustrated is round, it is obvious that it may be made in various other shapes without departing from the inven tion.
I claim:
1. The combination with. a button havi a recess in its face with a surrounding wa 1 extending substantially at right angles to its base, of a panel having a flange at its edge inwardly turned at right angles thereto the outer face of said flange engaging the'inner face of. said wall for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a button having a recess in its face with a surrounding wall extending substantially at right angles to its base, .of a panel havinga flange at its edge inwardly turned at right angles thereto and fitted in said recess, the outer face of said flange engaging the innerface of said wall for the purpose specified, there d being corrugations in the face of the button around the recess for the Ipurposespecified.
'In testimony whereof have slgned my ification.
name to this s MARTIN PATREMIO.
