- This improvement consists in the combination, with a water-closet bowl having a thickened upper edge, in which a groove is formed to receive a strip of suitable packing to form an air-tight joint between the bowl and seat, of an outlet-pipe at the top of the bowl, just under the seat and at the rear side, connecting with a suitable flue or pipe in the wall of the building and leading upward out into the open air, whereby a ventilating draft is created for carrying ofi' the foul air and preventing the stench rrom pervading the room, thus renderable packing to make an air-tight joint between the said bowl and the seat-board which lies over it.

IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATING WATER-CLOSET BOWLS.
- Specification forming part of Lctters'Patent No. 138,267, dated April 29, 1873; application filed March 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. VICTOR MATHIVET, of Cleveland, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Ventilating Water-Closet Bowl, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement consists in the combination, with a water-closet bowl having a thickened upper edge, in which a groove is formed to receive a strip of suitable packing to form an air-tight joint between the bowl and seat, of an outlet-pipe at the top of the bowl, just under the seat and at the rear side, connecting with a suitable flue or pipe in the wall of the building and leading upward out into the open air, whereby a ventilating draft is created for carrying ofi' the foul air and preventing the stench rrom pervading the room, thus renderable packing to make an air-tight joint between the said bowl and the seat-board which lies over it. 0 is an outlet-pipe, which is to lead to aflue or pipe in or attached to the wall of the room for conducting off the effluvia from the bowl. I claim In a water-closet bowl' having a thickened upper edge, the combination of the groove B and packing and the outletpipe (J, for the purposes respectively of forming an air-tight joint between the bowl and seat, and for ventilating the bowl in such manner as to prevent the escape of odors into the apartment, substantially as described.
