ORSON N. KELLY, 0F DALLAS, TEXAS.
COLLAR FASTENER 0R CLASP.
Application led August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,458.
T oI aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORSON N. KELLY, av
citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners or Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to a fastener or clasp, and more particularly to such a fastener which will grip and hold in proper position the flaps of a soft collar and insure a neat appearance thereof while in use.
It has for its object the provision of a collar fastener, which will hold the Haps of a collar properly spaced from each other, and to insure a secure gripping of the flaps to aviod untidy appearance of the collar. A. further object of the invention is to provide a fastener in which the gripping means will be hidden from view, and one which may be used upon relatively thick collars and subsequently upon collars made of thinner and more delicate fabric without possibility of its failure to grip the same. A. further object is the provision of a fastener of this type, which will permit an easy engagement of the collar fiaps. A still further object of the invention is to provide a double clasp, the' two pairs of clamping jaws of which being actuated by a single rotating lock member.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following ldescription andthe novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
lfn the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of myffastener applied to a collar,
2 .is a top plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof,
Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Fig. 2
of modified forms of the invention, and
Fig. 6, is a sectiontaken through one end ofthe lock lever and one of the clamping Jaws showing the beveling of the edgesof the lock lever.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.v
The numeral v1() indicates the front or body portion of the fastener or clasp, from which projects a pair of resilient clamping members 11, 11, and a centrally disposed pin or pivot 12, upon which is rotatably mounted a cam lock 13.
The clamping members 11, 11, may be attached to the front bar or body portion by any suitable means, but as shown they have been screwed into threaded openings 14. They comprise a relatively straight piece of, preferably, flat wire comprising the gripping member proper 11a and an elbow 15 against which the ends of the rotating cam lock abut to produce a clamping or gripping action between the portions 11a andthe ends of the body portion. p
Between the clamping members 11, 11, there is a stud vor pivot, upon which is mounted the rotating cam lock for the two clamping jaws.. This stud is formed with a spacing'section o r enlargement 16, which serves to elevate sufficiently the cam lock to correspond with the particular curvature of the elbows 15. This cam lock comprises a central connecting section 17 and a pair of end or abutting fingers 18, 18, which coperate with the elbows of the gripping arms to produce a gripping action, as heretofore pointed out. Suitable means is provided upon the elbows 15 and fingers 18 to permitv of the easy engagement of the parts forproducing the clamping action. As shown these parts are beveled as at 19. While I have shown the clamping arms as made separate from the body portion and secured thereto, it will be understood that they may be made .as a part of the body by stamping them up from the same, and may be enlarged slightly at their ends to more effectually clamp the collar flap to the body portion.
1n the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the spacing section or enlargement of the stud or pivot is omitted and the gripping arms 20lhave less curvature in the elbows thereof, while the cam look 22 is mounted upon the stud in closeA proximity to the body portion with the connecting section thereof in substantial contact with said body portion, the fingers 23 in this case being longer and havlng a curvature somewhat corresponding with that of the elbows 21.v
1n the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the body portion 25 is made straight, while the gripping .arms 26 are made in a single piece of material, which isdepressed in the central portion thereof and 'is connected to the body portion by means of the stud or rivet 27,upon' which is also mounted` theV rotating cam lock 28. This cam lock has the form of a substantially straight bar, which in its rotation presses upon the p curved portions 29 of the gripping arms 26 to cause the outer ends thereof to approach the ends of the body 25 to produce a clamping action between these parts for the purpose of ripping the flaps of the collar.
'In or er to prevent the arms 26 from rotating upon the body portion a boss 30 of non-circular formation is provided upon the body portion, which boss lies within a recess ofja correspondin shape upon the inner fa'ce of the bar 26. he stud or pivot 27 passes through all three members. 25, I26 and 28.
In all forms of the invention there is a single rotating cam lock which produces the gripping action between both clamping jaws or members and the ends of the body portion. It will be noted that the cam lock is applied to the gripping arms in such a manner as to reinforce and strengthen the same when under tension. 1
Any suitable ornamental design may be placed upon the front of the body portion to increase the attractiveness thereof, and
while I have described the fastener as applied t0 holding the flaps of a soft collar,\it
may be used for other purposes as well.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description and a detailed recital thereof will not be neces sary. It is sufficient to set forth that the body portion, which is relatively stiff, will act as an engaging member, and one of the ends of the gripping member between which y the collar flaps will be placed, when the turning of the cam lock will place these parts under clamping relationship for the purpose of securely holding the aps therein. i. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fastener or clasp comprising a body portion, a pair of oppositely dis osed gripping members supported, by sai bod-y portion and coperating with the ends of said body portion to form clamps, and a single rotating cam lock coacting with intermediate portions of both said grlpping mem-y bers to apply a clamping pressure-at the ends thereof.l
2. A clasp or fastener comprising two pairs of oppositely`disposed clamping jaws, and a cam lock for causing the clamping jaws to coact to produce a gripping action therebetween, said cam rotating in a plane substantially parallel with that of the clamping jaws. j,
3. In a clasp or fastener, a body portion, clamping jaws coperating therewith vand comprising bent portions, a stud or pin mounted upon said body portion between said bent portions, and a cam lock mounted upon said stud or pin and coacting with said bent portions of the clamping jaws to establish clamping relationship between the ends ofthe body portion and the jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
