To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, CARL STI-IBOL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Sault Ste. Marie, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wide-Opening Clam-Shell Buck ets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ore buckets of the wide opening gravity clam type, having separate opening and closing ropes, and the objects 01 the invention are to provide a bucket of simplified design and have a greater digging capacity in proportion to its weight, in which the various operative parts will be well designed to perform the functions required of them.
Further objects of the invention are to obtain uniform closing power and increased traveling stability.
It consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings:

Referring to the drawings, A and B indicate the two bucket parts adapted to centrally abut when closed as shown in Fig. 1, both bucket parts being supported at their inner ends by pairs of pivot supporting arms C and D, which pairs of arms are pivoted together at their upper ends by suitable pivot pins 10.

B are supported and controlled in an angular position by pairs of controlling links E and F, which are pivoted to suitable brackets 11 and 12 on the bucket parts, the upper ends of the links E and F being pivoted to toggle levers G and H.
The inner ends of the toggle levers G and H are pivoted together by a suitable pivot pin 13, while the outer ends are pivoted to the arms C and D by pivot pins let and 15, which may be surrounded with suitable sleeves. l6 and 17 each formed with end flanges 18 designed to bear against the sides of the levers and give increased support thereto.
h lovement of the toggle levers G and H is effected by means of opening ropes 19 and 20, which extend through a fixed pin 21 on a bracket 22 mounted on the pivot pin 10, around separate spools 23 and 2d mounted freely on the pin 13 provided on the lower side with a semi-circular guard 25, the opening ropes extending in a manner well known in the art over pulleys 4L1 to a suitable winding drum or other mechanism for operating the same.
It will be seen that as the opening ropes are operated, the pivot pins 13 will be raised, opening the arms C and D as shown in Fig. 4%, and causing the upper pivot pins of the levers E and F to swing inwardly rocking the bucket parts about the pivot points of the levers C and D.
The closing mechanism will now be described, and includes closing ropes 26 and 27, which extend around pulleys 28 and 29 on the bracket 22, and at the inner ends are wound around and connected to drums 30 and 31, which are mounted on transversely extending spools 32 and 83, which spools are mounted on suitable shafts 34 and 35. supported from the pairs of arms C and D.
The spools turn with the drum and the spools have closing slings 36 and 37 connected thereto, each closing sling having one end connected to a pin 38 on one of the arms C or D, while the other end of the sling is wound around and secured at its end to the opposite spool. In this way when a pull is exerted on the closing ropes, the drums are turned, and the turning of the drums, wind up the slings 36 and 37, drawing the spools centrally toward each other, and carrying the pairs of arms C and D centrally toward each other, and thus closing the bucket parts A and B.
The method of attaching the closing slings to the spools is particularly to be noted. Each sling extends through eyes 37 termed in rings 3? which extend around thespools 32, the eye being formed in part by the ring and in part by depressions 37 in the spool 82.
The eye is "formed with rounded edges so that the sling may slide in it. Eyes 37 are spliced in opposite ends of the sling, which eyes are attached to either pair of the arms U or D.
It will be seen strains the uniform strain on of the slings.
To give additional strength to the arms C and D, angle bar braces or members &0 are provided thereon, which also act as guards preventing the bucket from catching with projecting nuts, etc., when going through openings such as the hatchway in a boat.
To give additional brace to the levers Tu and 1* in closed position and to limit their movement, cross bars are-provided connecting the members of each pair of links E or F. The sides of which are suitably secured to the bucket parts. The bucket members A and B may be reinforced also with members 39 It will be'seen that the mechanism for opening and closing the bucket parts has already been explained. It will be seen that it is constructed of few and simple parts. Attention is drawn. to the top construction of the bucket, which is such that in closing in sidewise the main arms and D form a pointed or pyramid top, which greatly increases the bucket clearance when hoisting througn a narrow opening such as the hatch of a boat.
It will be observed that at the top, the pairs of arms G or D are bent inwardly in a lateral direction toward each other to effect economy in space as above indicated.

What I claim as my invention is 1. ln a bucket of: the character described and in combination, two bucket parts, supthat this arrangement conoppos1te sides measles porting arms pivoted together and to the bucket parts, toggle levers pivoted to the supporting arms, links connecting the toggle arms with the bucket parts, an opening rope operatively connected to the end of the toglevers, spools carried by the supporting arms, drums on the spools, and slings extending between the spools on opposite supporting arms in such a way that when the spools are turned, the arms will be drawn closer together, and closing ropes opcratively connected to the drums and adapted when pulled. to turn the drums and spools and cause the slings to draw the supporting arms together.

9. The arrangement according to claim 1, in which the supporting arms have protecting angle members L0 thereon.
