. useful UNITED STATES WALLACE S. WARNOCK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRINTING-PLATE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J une 21, 1921,
Application filed January 25, 1921. Serial No. 439,875.
To all whom it may concern a V Be it known that I, VVALLACE S. WVAnNocn, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and Improvement in PrintingPlate Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to printing plate holders and has for its general object the provision of simplified mechanism entering into the construction of the holder so that the holding jaw thereof may readily be applied to a plate to be clamped thereby and may be shifted in location to suit the location of the work to be held.
In practising my invention I employ a carrier, a clamping jaw upon the carrier, a jaw actuating device upon the carrier, a printing foundation formed to receive the carrier, a lever mounted upon the carrier, and a detent in cam connection wlth the lever and operable thereby to be engageable with the printing foundation.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the carrier is hollow and the lever is of U-form, this lever being disposed within the carrier and mounted at its ends to turn upon the carrier and there is a bar slidably mounted upon and within the carrier and engaging the lever to operate it. There are two detents, one in cam connection with each end of the lever and operable by the lever to be engageable with the printing foundation which is formed with holes within any of which the hollow carrier is receivable.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partially in section, on a large scale, of the device'of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken at right angles to the direction in which Fig. 1 is taken; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device of my invention; Fig. 4. is a perspective view illustrating some of the cooperating parts of the device of the m vention; and Fig. 5 is a plan view lllustrating one of the apertured blocks which together make up a printing foundation or bed.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The printing bed or foundation 1 maybe of any suitable shape, the drawing showing a flatbed that may be composed of a number of blocks 2 which when suitably assembled, form the bed, with a plurality of cylindrical holes 3. Each hole is desirably provided with an annular enlargement 4 below the work supporting face of the foundation whereby there is provided in each hole, preferably near the bottom thereof, an annular retaining shoulder 5. Carriers 6 are used in suflicient number to hold the printing plate or form upon the bed, these carriers supporting the work engaging mechanism. The carriers are preferably cylindrical in order that they may be snugly received within the holes within which they are rotatable in order that the work engaging mechanism may be positioned to suit the location of the work that is to be held upon the printing foundation. A lever 8 of U-form is mounted upon and within each shell 6 and upon which the ends of the U-shaped lever 8 are journaled. A cam prong 10 projects from each end of the lever and enters an oblique slot 11 formed in a detent 12. Each detent has an upwardly projecting branch 18 which surrounds the pin 9 and upon which it is slidable. The cam slots 11 are oppositely directed so that for a given movement of the lever 8 the detents 12 are moved in opposite directions. When the cam lever 8 is turned in one direction the detents 12 are spread apart to engage beneath the shoulder 5. When the lever 8 is turned in the other direction the detents are drawntogether to be removed from beneath such shoulder. WVhen the detents are beneath the annular shoulder the carrier and the mechanism upon it are firmly assembled with the printing bed or foundation. When the detents are withdrawn from engagement with the shoulder the carrier may be withdrawn from the hole in which it was placed to be removed from the bed or to be placed in another hole in the bed; The means for adjusting the lever preferably resides in a bar 14 which is mounted to slide within the shell having such lever, this bar being confined to recti lineal movement by being interposed between the inner face of the shell and the ears 15 struck inwardly from the shell. This rectilineal movement of the sliding bar 14 is further defined by means of the rod 16 carried at the upper end of the shell and a slot 17 formed longitudinally in the bar 14. The clamping jaw 18 projects above the shell in Each of these blocks is formed position to be engaged with a printing foundation. This jaw has a lower continuation or base portion 19 that is rotatably mounted upon the pin 9. A nut 20 is in threaded engagement with the rod, this nut having a continuation 21 that passes through the base of the jaw 18. The larger end of the nut 20' printing foundation within said opening is formed to be engageable by a suitable adjusting tool whereby the nut may be moved back and forthupon the rod v16. The larger end'of the nut 20 and the continuation 21 thereof areso'formed that the jaw will be moved by the nut in either direction in which the nut may travel on the rod 16. lVhen the jaw 18 is clamped against an edge of the plate which is to beassembled with the printing foundation, the plate will over.- lie the upper end of the sliding bar 1 1 to hold this bar in its depressed position in which it is placed in order to turn the U- shaped lever 8 in such a direction as to force thedetents 12 apart and beneath the annular shoulder 5. y
It will be observed that the cylindrical shells may readily be turned within the holes that receive them to cause the jaws to face selected directions whereby the work may be held upon the foundation in any selected position. The assembly of the plate holders with the foundation is quickly effected and firmly maintained, it being impossible for the holders to fall out of place if the mechanism for assembling them with the foundation has been properly operated.
The simplicity in the construction of my device and the effectiveness thereof will be readily appreciated, by those skilled inthe art.
While I have. herein shown and particu larly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following I 1. The combination with a carrier; of a clamping jaw upon the carrier; a jaw actuating device upon the carrier; a printing foundation formed to receive the carrier; a lever mounted upon. the carrier; and a detent in cam connection with the lever and operable thereby to beengageable with the clamping jaw upon the carrier; a jaw actuating device upon the carrier; a printing foundation formed to receive the carrier; an intermediately pivoted lever mounted upon the carrier; and a detent in cam connection with the lever and operable thereby to be engageable with the printing foundation.
