A BROWN STAMP FOR X-RAY MOUNTS Filed July 20, 1933 Patented Oct. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES PAsr oFFIcE This invention relates to a cutting stamp for forming tabs in mounting material to receive and hold photographic prints, films, etc. t is more particularly designed for preparing celluloid film mounts for dental X-ray pictures.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a small, simple, inexpensive device of this character which can be used to cut a series of holding tabs in a mount so that films or any articles may be mounted in any desired position on the mount.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that the holding tabs may be accurately positioned in alignment and in an accurate vertical or horizontal position.
It is the custom to mount dental X-ray films upon a mount consisting of a sheet of celluloid, preferably frosted celluloid, so that a softened light will pass through the mount to illuminate the films. These mounts are usually purchased by dentists in quantities with the film holding tabs already in placethereon. They are comparatively expensive and exceedingly inconvenient for the user never knows in advance whether the films are to be mounted vertically or horizontally and with pre-formed sheets, flexibility of mounting positions is impossible.
While the mounting of dental films is one of the outstanding uses for the present invention, itis desired to be understood that the invention is not, of course, limited to this particular use. It could be employed for many other uses such as stamping cards for receiving other cards or pictures, album sheets for receiving photographs, prints, etc.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efficiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the. description.

The invention comprises: a base 10 from which arises a curved arm 11 to support a hollow cylindrical head 12. A Working table 13 is secured on and extends outwardly from the base 10. The plate 13 is formed about a die plate 14 also secured on the base 10.
A rotatable shaft 15 is mounted in the hollow head 12, surrounded by a compression spring 16. The compression spring is compressed between a reduced extremity 17 in the bottom of the head and an enlarged portion 18 formed on the shaft. A pressure washer 29 is positioned between the enlarged portion 18 and the spring 16. The shaft is provided with a suitable operating knob 19 at its top.
The lower extremity of the shaft 15 is arranged to receive a die head 20 which may be secured thereto in any desired manner. As illustrated, the'shaft is threaded into the die head and the former is split as shown at 21 and provided with an expansion screw 22 by means of which, the shaft may be expanded to lock the die head in any desired position. The die head 20 carries suitable male die members 23 which register with corresponding depressions 24 and 24 in the die plate 14.
The head may be rotated through an arc of 90, the amount of rotation being limited by means of a stop screw 25 which extends into a circumferentially extending groove 26 formed in the enlarged portion 18 of the shaft. At each extremity the groove turns upwardly to form two vertical grooves 27-to allow the shaft 15 to be depressed when it is in either of its two extreme positions. In the bottom of the groove 26 a leaf spring 28 is preferably positioned. This spring bears against the inner extremity of the screw 25 and indicates when the latter is at either extremity of the groove.
It can be seen that the die plate 14 has two separate series of indentations 24' and 24, respectively. The die members 23 of the diehead enter the series 24 when the die head is in the vertical position and the series 24 when in the horizontal position. v
A guide plate 30 is slidably mounted upon the 1 table plate 13 and is held in place by means h of a pair of parallel, hinged links 31 which are secured at their one extremity to the table and the other extremity to the guide member 30. The links 31 maintain the forward edge of the guide memberin parallel relation to theidie plate fio regardless of its position.
A thumb screw 32 is carried by the guide member 30. The lower extremity of this screw projects slightly below the lower surface of the member 30 to enter depressions 33 formed in the table plate 13. By lifting the member 30, by means of the screw 32, the screw extremity can be shifted to the proper depression to bring the guide member to the proper adjusted position and maintain it in place. I
Let us assume that it is desired to prepare a celluloid mount 34 for receiving a series of dental films such as indicated attBS in Fig. 6. The guide plate 30 is positioned to properly align the mount with the die head when the lower edge of the mount is placed. thereagainst. The head 19 is rotated to place the die head 2% horizontally of the mount since the first film is to be mounted horizontally. The knob 19 is then struck with the hand or pressed .upon, causing the die members 23 to pass through the mount into the depressions 24 of the die plate 14. This forms a series of tabs 35 in a horizontal position. The sheet is then moved to the next position and the knob 19 is rotated to posi tion the die head 20 vertically of the mount 34 for the next film. This is continued until tabs 35 have been formed for all the desired films, after which the dental films 36 may be inserted under the tabs as illustrated.
As the operator turns the knobs 19, the leaf spring 28 presses against the screw 25 and tends to retard the turning movement until the extremity is reached at which time the spring will snap outwardly, serving to notify the operator that he has reached the extreme of movement and also acting to hold the shaft in the proper position to allow the screw to enter the vertical grooves 27.
The knob 19 is simply illustrative of one meth- 0d of operating the vertical shaft. It could, if desired, be operated by a lever or other medium. The stop screw 25 is simply illustrative of one method of accurately stopping the rotation of the shaft at the proper positions. Any means for accurately stopping the rotation at the proper points to allow the male die members to enter their corresponding depressions would serve equally well.
It is desired to call attention to the preferred spacing of the die members 23 and depressions 24 and 24', which are so arranged to allow the single die plate 14 to be employed for both sets without interference as indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 5.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent 1. A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a die plate having two series of female impressions of said tabs; a die head having male projections for entering said impressions; and depressible means for rotatably supporting said die head over said die plate so that the former may be rotated to align the projections on the die head with any desired series of impressions in said die plate. 2. A device for forming'tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising:
a die plate having two series of female impressions of said tabs; a die head having male projections for entering said impressions; depressible means for rotatably supporting said die head over said die plate so that the former may be rotated to align the projections on the die head with any desired series of impressions in said die plate; and means for positively stopping the rotation of said die head at a position of alignment with said series.
3. A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a die plate having two series of female impressions of said tabs; a die head h ing male projections for entering said impressions; depressible means for rotatably supporting said die head over said die plate so that the former may be rotated to align the projections on the die head with any desired series of impressions in said die plate; and means for preventing said depressible means from being depressed until said projections are in alignment with a series of impressions.

A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a base; a die plate carried by said base and'provided with several series of die impressions for forming said tabs; a vertically positioned cylindrical head supported from said base above said die plate; a rotatable and vertically movable shaft carried in said cylindrical head; and a die head carried on the lower extremity of said shaft having male die members which may be brought into alignment with any desired series of impressions in said die plate.
6. A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a base; a die plate carried by said base and provided with several series of die impressions for forming said tabs; a vertically positioned cylindrical head supported from said base above said die plate; a rotatable and vertically moveable shaft carried in said cylindrical head; a die head carried on the lower extremity of said shaft having male die members which may be brought into'alignment with any desired series of impressions in, said die plate; a spring normally supporting said shaft and allowing it to be forced toward said die plate; and means for limiting the rotative movement of said shaft.

A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a base; a die plate carried by said base and provided with several series of die impressions for forming said tabs; a vertically positioned cylindrical head supported from said base above said die plate; a rotatable and vertically moveable shaft carried in said cylindrical head; a die head carried on the lower extremity of said shaft having male die members which may be brought into alignment with any desired series of impressions in said die plate, said shaft being provided with a segmental groove in its surface; a projection extending into said groove from said cylindrical sleeve so as to limit the rotative movement of said shaft, said groove extending upwardly at its extremities to allow downward movement of said shaft; and spring means contacting with said projection so as to urge it toward the extremities of said groove.

A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a base; a die plate carried by said base and provided with several series of die impressions for forming said tabs; a vertically positioned cylindrical head supported from said base above said die plate; a rotatable and vertically moveable shaft carried in said cylindrical head; a die head carried on the lower extremity of said shaft having male die members which may be brought into alignment with any desired series of impressions in said die plate; a spring normally supporting said shaft and allowing it to be forced toward said die plate; means for limiting the rotative movement of said shaft; and a knob formed on the upper extremity of said shaft by means of which it may be forced downwardly.
10. A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films and the like comprising: a. base; a die plate carried by said base and provided with several series of die impressions for forming said tabs; a vertically positioned cylindrical head supported from said base above said die plate; a rotatable and vertically moveable shaft carried in said cylindrical head; a die head carried on the lower extremity of said shaft having male die members which may be brought into alignment with any desired series of impressions in said die plate; and a table plate supported by said base substantially on a level with said die plate.

In a device for forming tabs in mounts for mounting X-ray films thereon, a die plate having impressions for forming said tabs; a table plate supported substantially on a level with said die plate; a guide member arranged to slide on said table plate so as to align said mount on said die plate; and means for causing said guide member to maintain a series of parallelly related positions.

A device for forming tabs in a mount for 10 mounting X-ray films comprising: a die head; dies projecting from said head for forming said tabs; depressible means for supporting said die head; means for rotating said die head so as to change the position of said die members; and 05 a lower plate below said die head for supporting a mount therebelow.
13. A device for forming tabs in a mount for mounting X-ray films comprising: a die head; dies projecting from said head for forming said 119 tabs; depressible means for supporting said die head; means for rotating said die head so as to change the position of said die members; a lower plate below said die head for supporting a mount therebelow; and means for positive- 115 ly stopping the rotation of said die head at predetermined positions thereof.
