Be It known that l, WILLIAM E. Brennan,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale, in the county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Winding-Machines, of Which the following is a lull, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to a winding machine and more particularly to a serving head for spirally applying ribbon or tape to a continuous thread core. The invention will perhaps find its widest application in connection with machines for applying tineel tape to a core to form an electrical conductor used in telephone switchboard cords and other similar compound electrical conductors.
The object of this invention is to provide a serving head for forming such tinsel condoctors which may be operated at high speed without causing the frequent breakage of the tinsel tape which is incident to the operation of certain serving heads heretofore used when operated at high speeds.
in order to attain this object in accordance with a feature of the invention, the triotional engagement of a braking means with the spool carrying member is controlled directly and solely by the tension of the serving material as-it is unwound from the spool so that the extent of such engagement varies in response to variations in the tension.

Another diametrically oppositely placed balancing arm 11 is attached to the plate member 8 in a similar manner. Also attached to the plate member 8 by means of a screw 12 engaging one end thereof is a spring member 13, a portron 14: of which is adapted to be in engagement with an adjusting nut 15 threaded on thestud 9, while a flat portion 16 of the spring member is adapted to irictionally engage the inner surface or the flange 7 of the sleeve 6. The free end of the spring 13 is formed to provide a looped portion 17 through which the serving material 5 is guided from the spool a after passing over the arm 9. By means of the adjusting nut 15, the pressure of flexible portion 16 against the flange 7 may be adjusted to any desired value sothat the tension of the serving material 5 passing through the guiding portion 17 will correctly regulate such pressure during the operation of the serving head.
In case the tension is increased, portion 16 is gradually removed from the flange 7 thereby reducing the length of the line of contact between the brake and the flange while a reduction in the tension increases the extent of such contact.
What is claimed is:.
1. In a servin head,'a spool for the serv ing material, a ictional brake with a flexible bearing portion for controlling the spool, and means controlled by the serving material for *adually varying the extent of contact of t e brak 2. In a serving head, a spool-carrying means, a. spool for the serving material mounted thereon, guiding means for the serving material, a spring brake with a flexible bearing portion frictionally engaging the spool-carrying means, and meansautomatically controlled by the guiding means for gradually varying the extent and pressure of the contact between the brake and the spool-carrying means. i
