Description

C. A. MORRIS.
IRRIGATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.28 192-0.

INVENTOR PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. MORRIS, OF AUGUSTA, COLORADO.
IRRIGATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 14, 1921.
Application filed August 28, 1920. Serial No; 406,646.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Irrigating Devlces, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to irrigating devices and it contemplates the provision of a device whereby water may be prevented from flowing past a predetermined point and caused to flow in various directions and this with but a slight amount of efli'ort on the part of those practising my invention.
The invention contemplates what might be termed an irrigating ditch dam that may be conveniently carried from one place to another for ready use when occasion arises.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of the device and showing the blades or wings in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1 showing various elements in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a view looking at the rear of my novel ditch dam,
Fig. at is a view similar to Fig. 3 and showing the blades or wings extended.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
My novel ditch dam comprises a portion 1 of an increased width at its upper end and provided at a point near said end and at each side of the portion 1 are slots 2.
Secured to and movable with respect to the portion 1 are handles 3 having the grip ping pins 5, and the said handles are secured to the lower end of the portion 1 by con nections 4.
Secured on the side portion 1 opposite to where the handles are connected are two blades or wings 6 that like the handles 3 are secured to the portion 1 at the lower end thereof by means of the fasteners at and at the upper end thereof by means of the fasteners 7, and it will be noted from Figs. 1 and 2 that the left-hand wing or blade is provided with a washer 8 against which the right-hand blade 6 bears.
In the practical use of my invention, the device is inserted in a ditch where it is desired to stop the flow of water'in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and the blades are then moved outwardly with respect to each other by manipulation of the handles 5 until said blades assume a position shown in Fig. 4 when water will be prevented from passing around the sides of the blades 6 because of the said blades entering the ground on the sides of the ditch.
It will be manifest that movement of the handles 5 will cause the fastener 7 to travel in the slots 2 and that during the movement of said blades the portion 1 will remain stationary.
The washer 8 will not only retain the right-hand wing in proper position at all times, but will also prevent water from leaking through at the lower left-hand connections at of the device.
I would have it distinctly understood that the device may be constructed of any material compatible with its purpose and that the elements entering into its construction may be increased or decreased in the discretion of those practising my invention.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that the invention is simple and inexpensive to produce and comprises no delicate parts 7 such as are liable to get out of order.
aving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a body portion, blades secured to and movable with respect to the body member; said blades overlapping each other, slots formed in the body member near the upper end thereof, handles secured to the body member, bolts passing through the handles near their lower ends and also passing through the body member and blades, and bolts secured to the handles and wings and adapted to move in the slots of the body member, whereby the blades may be moved with respect to each other.
2. In a device for the purpose specified, the combination of a body portion, apertures formed in the lower end thereof and slots formed in the upper portion of said body,
blades having rounded overlapping ends, being adapted to move in the slots of the 10 upper and lower apertures formed in the body member.
blades, handles having upper and lower ap- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ertures formed therein, and bolts adapted my hand in presence of two subscribing witto pass through the lower apertures of the nesses.
body member, blades and handles whereby CHARLES A. MORRIS. said elements are secured to each otherand Witnesses: other bolts adapted to pass through the up- C. F. TIProN,
