HENRY EV. HALSETH, F VIRGINIA, MINNESOTA.
PEN RETAINER AND RELEASER FOR PENHOLDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed June 14, 1921.
Appiication filednecemter 15, i920. serial No. 430,857.
To all fr0/0m vt may concern f a citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have inventedV certain new and useful Improvements in Pen Retainers and Releasers for Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pen retainers and releasers for penholders and has for a primary object the provision of a simplified device which will positively retain the pen from displacement, but which will permitfexpeditious removal of the pen after the latter `)has served its purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a retainer and releaser of this type which may be used with penholders of standard construction and may be easily inserted in and withdrawn from the penholder when desired.
The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l, is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention illustrating its application.
Fig. 2, is a front elevational view of the device.
Fig. 3, is a rear elevational view thereof.
Fig. 4, is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form.
Fig. 6, is a side elevational view of still a further form of the invention, and
Fig. 7, is a top plan view of the form of invention shown in Fig. 6.
In the drawings, in order to illustrate the application of this invention a portion of a penholder 8 is shown which is preferably of standard construction and has mounted therein a pen 9, which is also standard.
The device of this invention consists of a strand of wire folded upon itself and having the free terminals thereof bent at right angles and converged outwardly to provide a linger abutment 10 as shown to advantage in Fig. 4. The ends of these abutments are rolled to provide eyes which provide a larger surface for contact of the linger. The strand after having been folded upon itself is bent into a substantially U-shape, the vertex l1 of which is engaged with the bottom of the pen receiving recess of the penholder. One leg of the U= which constitutes the front of my device, as indicated at 19 extends downwardly through the pen socket of the penliolder for engagement with the pen 9 as shown to advantage in Fig. l. The outerterminal of said leg is square as indicated at 13 to facilitate entrance of the pen. The opposite leg of the U is engaged with the inner periphery of the pen receiving recess of said holder and the outer end thereof eX- tendcd slightly beyond the terminal of the penholder so as to project the abutments 10 laterally appreciably beyond the periphery of the penholder. Preferably, the portions of the strand of wire constituting the front leg of the U are straight as shown in Fig. 2, so as to give a broader surface to positively hold the pen in position. Also the verteX of the U is by preference pinched together as shown in Fig. 4, thereby canting the sides of the U member into engagement, as shown to advantage in Fig. 2. In this way, not only are the portions of the strand which constitute the front leg of the U held in spaced relation, but likewise the rear leg will be held in a similar position as shown to advantage in Fig. 3.
When it is desired to eject the pen 9, pressure is exerted upon the finger abutment 10, causing' the latter to be moved outwardljT so as to disengage the complete retainer from the holder. The device is then reinserted in the penholder and a new pen aiiixed in an obvious manner.
The form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 is very similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, except that the vertex of the U is pinched only adjacent the front leg of the U as indicated at 14. This will cause a greater binding action in the pen recess of the holder so as to more positively prevent casual displacement of the device from the holder.
The form disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings is substantially identical with the form shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive except that the abutments 10 eliminate the use of the looped eyes, thereby curtailing the cost of manufacture of the device.
In use of the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the same procedure as thatdescribed for use of the form shown in Figs. l to 4, is followed.
Changes may be made in this device especially in the proportions thereof and the manner of usage as covered by the appended claims.
That is claimed is:
l. A pen retainer and releaser including a strand of Wire folded upon itself and then bent into a substantially U-shape, one leg of the U embracing the inner face of the pen and the opposite leg embracing the inner wall of the pen holder, said latter leg being extended and bent at right angles so as to lie beyond the outer periphery of the penholder to serve as an abutment for removing the device. from the penholder.
2. A pen retainer and releaser including a strand of Wire folded upon itself and then bent into a substantially U-shape, one leg of the U embracing the inner face of the pen and the opposite leg embracing the inner wall of the penholder, said latter leg being extended and bent at right angles so as to lie beyond theV outer periphery of the penholder to serve as an ,abutment for removing the device from the penholder, Said pen embracing leg having its free end flared to facilitate entrance of the pen into the holder.
3. A pen releaser and retainer including a strand of Wire bent into parallelism and then formed to provide a U-shaped body, the vertex of said body being pinched together to provide relatively broad legs, one of Which engages the pen and the other the penholder substantially as' described.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
