Be it known that I, Join A. OLRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for \Vindin-g-hlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guides for vinding machines, and is an improvement over the construction shown and described in my 385,116,
filed May 29, 1920.
In a prior application, I have disclosed and claimed a quill winder having a removable eye. The eye is secured to the tension wire by means of a spring having a hooked end engaging the eye and permitting removal.
In the present invention, I have replaced the porcelain eye of the quill winder shown in my present application with a grooved roller which may be made of metal, porcelain or other suitable. material. The roller is removably supported in a bracket or bearing carried by the end of the tension wire, and means are provided for tightening the roller to hold it against rotation, when the tighten ing means are adjusted in one position and to permit rotation of the roller when the means are arranged in a different position.
The provision of a grooved roller in place of the usual eye affords a very eiiicient construction. When the device is used with some types of silk, it is advantageous to permit rotation of the grooved roller. Under other conditions, it is advisable to hold the roller stationary and merely have the, roller serve as a guide.

A set screw 7 may be arranged in an opening in the bracket, whereby the bracket may be held in fixed position relative to the tension wire.

The plate is extended beyond the end of the arm 8 at right angles thereto, as at 13, and is provided with a further extension 1%, arranged parallel to the arm 8 and spaced therefrom. The latter portion of the plate is provided with an opening 15, adapted to be arranged in alinement with the threaded opening 9 when the device is assembled. The pin 10 passes through this openin and is provided with a grooved roller 16, the roller being arranged on a bushing 17, as shown, and having a peripheral groove 18. The roller may be constructed of any suitable material, and under some conditions, I prefer to make the roller 01 porcelain, thus using the same material that has heretofore been used in the manufacture oi eyes for quill winders. However, I have found that'a metal roller is very suitable for the purpose and may advantageously be employed.
As shown, the arm 8 is provided with a de pression 19, which receives the end of the roller and prevents the thread from catching between the roller and the arm. The end of the plate 14: is curved or extended outwardly, as at 20, to permit insertion of the thread between the plate 14 and the base of the bracket 5.
As stated, the device may be adjusted to permit revolution of the roller, or to maintain the roller in a stationary position, and have the groove of the roller serve as a guide. The pin 10 is provided with a handle 21, whereby it may be turned. hen the pin is tightened, the resilient plate 14: bears against the end of the roller and prevents revolution. By loosening the pin a slight extent, revolution of the roller is permitted. The device may be easily disassembled by removing the pin 10 and the screw 12. If a porcelain roller is employed and the roller breaks, the pin 10 may be removed and the member 11 taken off by loosening the screw 12 to permit insertion of a new roller.
It is to be understood that the form of invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
I. A guide for winding machines comprising a tension wire, a substantially L- shaped bracket swiveled on the end of said tension wire, a U-shaped plate secured to said bracket, one of the arms of the U-shaped plate being arranged substantially parallel to one of the arms of the bracket and spaced therefrom, said bracket and said plate being provided with alined openings, a shaft arranged in said openings a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft, said arm of the U- shaped plate being arranged adjacent one face of said roller, and means carried by said shaft for forcing said arm of the U- shaped plate into engagement with the roller to prevent rotation thereof.
2. A guide for winding machines comprising a tension wire, a bracket swiveled on the end of said tension wire, a substantially U-shaped-plate having one arm secured to said bracket and its opposite arm arranged parallel to said bracket and spaced therefrom, said bracket and plate being provided with alined openings, said bracket being further provided with a depression in one face thereof, concentric with the opening therein, a shaft arranged in said openings, and a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft having a portion of one end thereof arranged in said depression.

A guide for winding machines com prising a tension Wire, a bracket swiveled on the end of said tension wire, a plate secured to said bracket and having an arm arranged parallel to said bracket and spaced therefrom, said bracket and said plate being provided with alined openings, said bracket being further provided with a depression in one face thereof concentric with the opening therein, a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft and having a portion of one end thereof disposed within said depression, the opposite end of said roller being arranged adjacent the arm of said plate, and means carried by said shaft for forcing the arm of said plate into contact with said roller.
4. A guide for winding machines comprising a tension wire. a substantially l-- shaped bracket swiveled on the end of said tension wire, a plate secured to said bracket and having an arm arranged parallel to said bracket and spaced .therefrom, bracket and said plate being provided with alined openings, a shaft mounted in s if openings, and a roller rotatably mcuntez. on said shaft, the free end of t arm of ne sai l plate being arranged adjacent the inner end of said bracket and curved outwardly therefrom.
A guide for winding machines comprising a tension wire, a substantially L- shaped bracket swiveled on the end of said tension wire, a plate secured to said bracket and having an arm arranged parallel to said bracket and spaced therefrom, said bracket and said plate being provided with alined. openings, said bracket being further p rorided with depression in one face thereof concentric with the opening therein. a shaft mounted in said openings, a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft and havin a portion of one end disposed within saw. depression, the opposite end of said roller being arranged adjacent the arm of said plate, the free end of the arm of said plate being arranged adjacent the inner end of said bracket and curved outwardly therefrom, and means carried by said shaft for forcing the arm of said plate into contact with said roller.
