Application filed Gctober 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Suns B. BnorvN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the coun v of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Repeating-Rifles, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to a toy repeating rifle, adapted to fire the conventional fulminate tape.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a perfectly safe, internal fire, toy repeating rifle, in which the explosion products are confined and directed for escape through the rifle barrel, provision being also made for the external discharge of the exploded tape.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a toy rifle structure and mechanism for holding and operating unitary tape-holding, feeding and cap-firing mechanism of the self-cocking type.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy which is simple, inexpensive, light, durable and readily manufactured and assembled on a large quantity output basis. The features of the invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the breech of my gun, the firing mechanism being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, the barrel being removed.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my complete gun.
Fig. 4: is a reverse plan of the barrel.
Fig. 5 is a front end view of the same.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view on line 6, 6, Fig. 3, showing the crimped end of the forward end of the barrel.
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view of the same on line 7, 7.
The specific type of tape-feeding, firing, trigger and hammer mechanism is not of the essence of the invention, provided that it be a unitary member adapted for inclosure and cooperation with a rifle breech.
For convenience of illustration and as a preferred embodiment, l have shown as this unitary, repeating tape-firing mechanism, the skeleton holding frame, tape-supporting, feeding, trigger and hammer mechanism Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented June id, 1921.
Serial No. 330,238.
fully disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,2i ")(l,4t25, dated Dec. 18, 191?, the detail de scription of which not essential to the understanding of the present invention.
Zlhis unitary bodyromprises toe skeleton holding frame 1, a ti i 'ger 2, and hammer 3, arranged for self-co g, ammunition tape roll 4, tape feeding mechanism 5 operated by the trigger, the exploded tape issuing from the forward anvil extension 6 of the frame.
This unit is assembled into a wooden rifle stock 7, having a hollowed breech chamber 8, of appropriate shape and dimensions, open at one side and having the lower portion formed with the opening 9, through which the trigger projects, one side of the breech being wholly open. These bottom and side o' iicnings are substantially closed by a swiveled breech plate 11, except where the trigger projects, and an opening 12- provided for tie escape of the exploded tape. The upper wall of the breech chamber is formed with a vertical slot 13 to be inclosed by the semi-cylindrical rear end section M, of the rifle barrel 5, the forvmrd end 16 of which is wholly cylindrical.
This rifle barrel is formed of light sheet metal rolled as indicated, with its bottom edges 17 overlapping, see Fig. '4', to form the front end of the barrel, the rear end being formed by the section 14 closing over the breech slot 13.
The front end of the stock is formed with the semicircular groove 18 for the endwise insertion of the rear end 1.9 of the lower half of the front end 16 of the barrel, holding the barrel to the stock at the front end, the rear end being secured by tack 20, This, while a very simple, inexpensive and convenient assemblage seeurance, is sufficient to firmly unite barrel and stock.
The side opening of the breech for loading, is preferably on the left hand side of the rifle, the breech plate 11 being pivoted to the stock at its forward end 21.
The bottom portion of this plate is contoured to engage around the bottom of the stock under the firing unit, its rear extremity having an extension piece 22 engaging upwardly over the right hand side of the stock at the breech and to minating in a lip 23 in position to be engaged by the thumb when the hand is in firing position, thus simulatmg in a degree the self-loading breech piece piece has a clamp-fit over the adjacent stock a 7 portion to hold the plate 11 normally closed.
This serves to wholly incase the firing zone,
of an actual repeatingrifle. This extension permitting the outward escape of explosion part1cles,-wh1ch follow the normal openlng provided by the barrel. The breech is thus readily opened up for loading, adjusting. or.
cleaning, and may be securely closed, rendering the toy'absolutely safe if properly used.
' The margins of the front end of the bare rel are upset to form the rounded muzzle end 2 see Fig. 5, which formation also imparts structural permanence and rigidity to the muzzle end, increasing the rifle-like appearance and avoiding sharp. ends liable to cut the hand. i I
The skeleton frame and firing mechanism are so formed that the loading can only be from one side, which is, of course, the left side adjacent the closure plate 11. r
This toy is simple, light and inexpensive,
yet durable, entirely safe, and 'constitutes a very attractive toy imitation ofa modern repeating rifle. I
' The invention is not concerned with the type of the firing unit, except where specific charactertistics necessitate corresponding characteristics of the breech, such as the correlation of the loading sideof the unit and the closure plate, the tape-ejecting provision, and the like, which will be appropriately particularized in the claims.
7 F or loading, the swiveling plate is opened up, the coil of tapeis placed on the bearing l0the resilient tape guide support 41 of the breech, a swivelbreech member on" mechanism mounted in said stock recess, and
a closure for said recess.
' '2. In a toy repeating rifle, the combination of a rifle stock formed with a breech chamber open at one side and at the bottom, and ammunition tape feeding and firing mechanism mounted in said breech chamber, adapted for loading from the open side the stock for opening and closing said-breech chamber, a rifle barrel-secured in the breech portion of the stock andhaving its rear end forming the upper portion of the breech chamber.
' Ina toy repeating rifle, thev combination of a rifle stock formed with a breech chamber'open on one sldeand at thejbottom of the stock, a unitary ammunition tape feeding and firing mechanism mounted in.
said breech chamber, and adapted for load ing on the open side of the breech, a plate pivoted on the stock for closing the said breech openings, the swinging end having a clamp fitting around the stock with thumb piece for opening, and a rifle barrel secured to the stock and having its rear end communicating with said breech chamber.
' 4:. In a toy repeating rifle, the combination of a stock formed with a breech chamber open at one side and at the bottom, an ammunition tape feeding and firing mechanism mounted in said chamber, and adapted for" loading on the open side of the breech, a breech plate swiveled to the stock for closing the side and bottomof the breech chamber, the bottom portion being provided with an opening for the trigger projection and for the escape of exploded tape, the moving end of said plate having a clamp fittlng over the stock and a thumb piece for opening,.a rlfle barrel, the rear end of which is partially cy lindrical and secured to the breech portion of the stock, the upper. wall of the breech chamber providing a communication with the rear end of the rifle barrel.
5. In a toy repeating rifle, the combination of a'rifle stock formed with a breech chamber open on one side and at the bottom,
and formed with a vertical slot in its upper wall, a unitary ammunition tape feeding and firing mechanism supported in said breech chamber and adapted to be loadedfrom the open side, a plate swiveledto the stock for closing the said bottom and side openings of the breech chamber through which the trig ger projects, the moving end of said plate having a clamp fitting upon the stock and a rifle barrel having its rear end partlally cylindrical, secured to the stoclginclosing the said vertical slot through the upper wall of the breech chamber.
6. In a toytrepeating rifle, a rifle stock formed with a breech chamber open on one side and atthe bottom, an'ammunitiontape feeding and firing 'mechanism inclosed in said chamber, the upper wall ofthe breech chamber being formed with an opening into the barrel, a plate swiveled to the stock for inclosing the side and bottom; of the breech chamber through which thetrigger projects,
