WITNESS:
ATTORNEY signal is given to call the attention of UNITED STATES LINZY BROOKS, OF RAINIER, OREGON TRAFFIC-SIGNAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June it. 3592i.
Application filed February 28', 1920. Serial No. 381,976.
To all m/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I. Lixzv l'inooxs. a citizen of the United States, residing at Rainier, in the county of Columbia and State of Uregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tratlic-Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to directional signals for automobiles and other vehicles and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for indicating when the vehicle is to be turned to the right, the left or is to be stopped.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for ringing an alarm when the pedestrians or other cars to the signal.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which I Figure l is a view showing the device in use on an automobile.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view and its attached parts.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail throug aid casing.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the operating means which are adapted to be fzrtened to the steering oolumn.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the electrical connection.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal Sectional view of the semaphore casing.
In these views 1 indicates the casing for containing the semaphor arms 2. these arms beinq pivoted in the casing at its upper end by t e pin 3. As shown the outer edge of the casing is open to permit the arms to swing outwardly and the shape of the casinp of the casing is such that when the arms are in inoperative position they will be entirely inclosed by the casing and cannot be seen from either the front- 01' rear. the upper part of the casing: and this arm carries the clamping means 5 for engaging with a part of the wind shield frame to hold the casing in position. Each of the scum- An arm 4 is connected with phore arms is provided with an annular extension (5 at its upper end which extends beyond the pivotal point and the operating wire 7 is connected to each extension. These wires pass through the covering tubes is to the actuating mechanism 9 on the steering post of the automobile. This mechanism consists of a case 10 provided with-the longitudinally extending; guideways 11. These guideways receive the longitudinally movable members 12 which have their upper ends connected with the wire 7. These members are provided with the handles 13 by which they may be manually moved. The tubes 8 have their ends sec red to the outer end of the case 10. A clamp 14- holds the case. 10 to the stccrinp column. 1 provide three semaphore arms. one of which contains the word Right. another the word Left, and the third the word Stop and the operating members 12 are made of different lengths So that they have different lengths of strokes. In this way one of the arms will be moved outwardly to extend at right angles to the case, another arm will he moved outwardly toextend at an acute angle from the caseand the third will be moved to extend at an obtuse angle from the case.
I provide an electrically operated alarm 15 on the case which is in electrical connection with any suitable form of battery anda switch 16 is located in said circuit. This switch is carried by the case 10 and consists of a stationary plate liconnectcd with the inner end of said case and a spring plate 18 which normally projects across the path of the actuating members l2. said plate lacing so arranged that when the members are moved to actuate the semaphore arms they will strike the spring plate and force it into contuct with the other plate and thus complete the circuit and cause the alarm to sound. The alarm will continue to sound until the actuating member is returned to its normal position and the semaphore arm lowered. Thus the attention of the pedestrians and drivers of other cars will be called to the semaphore arms so that they will readily see that the car is to make a turn or is going to stop.
.t bracket 4' is carried by the arm -i and this bracket supports the outer ends of the tubes 8 and also supports the conductors leading to the alarm 15.
It is thought from the foregoing: description that the advantages and novel features on the other end of the arm for engaging of my invention will be readily apparent. the windshield frame, a bracket on said arm, I desire it to be understood that I may signal arms in the box, aotuatingmeans 10- make changes in the construction and in the cated adjacent the drivers seat, flexible 15 5 combination and arrangement of the several members leading from the actuating means parts, provided that such changes fall Withto the signal arms and tubes for said means in the scope of the appended claim. 7 having their outer ends supported by said What I claim is bracket. I An automobile signal comprising a signal In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. 20 10 box, a relatively long arm having its outer 1 end connected to the box, clamping means LINZY BROOKS
