To all' wim/1n it' may concern.:
Be it known that l, ll'iniiiiin' (hun, a citizen of the Unitefi States, and a resident of lllaterville.. in the count)y of Lucas and State of Uliio, have made an invention Appertaining lo Audible lioxwliiquid-Level Alarm for lanks; and l do hei-elif.' declare the following to be a full, clear` and enact description ol' the invention, sueh as will enableV others skilled in the art to which it anpertains to niake and use the saine, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings. and to the characters oiJ reference. marked thereon, which forni a part ot this speeilieatioii.
This invention relates to audible alzirnis :tor use partieularly in connection with the liquid containinl` tanks ol' auton'iohiles to indicate a predetermined low liquid level therein.
The object of the invention is the provision ol' an improved simple and ellicient signal or alarni means ol the class deserilied which is operable bj; movements of the ve liiele to sound an audible alai'ni when the liquid in the container is at a predete 'niined low level therein, and prevented by the liquid l'roin sounding' an alarni when the liquid is above said leve.
The invention fully described in the following;1 specification, and while, in its broader aspen, it is capable ol' embodiment in numerous forins5 a. few onlyY olE such forms are illustrated in the accompanying' drawings. in which?"- re l is a vertical section or' a liquid container equipped with one lorin of the invention with the liquid therein at low level point and the signal means operative. Fig. is a similar view of another nioi'litieation ol! the device in which the signal means is disposed entirely within the container. elerringivto the drawings, l designates a liquid tank or containerw for instance the gasolene tank of an automobile, having the opening' 2 in its top through which the tank inav be filled7 which openingr is closed by a removable (rap 3.' Suspended through the opening' lroiii the cap 3, or in any other suitable manner, down into the tank is bell, gone' or other resonant'member fl, lili suspending nieans therefor, in the present irising a, Sectional rod 5 havinstantie, coni ingr the sections thereof connected bvf a buckle facilitate a vertical member 4 within me Specification of Letters Patent.
.Si striker suspendid within the ref-:online ineniher l, for free swinging movements therein. by a eliain or other flexible meinber T. Attached to the lower end of the striker :3 a 'flea' lil, which is movable up the resonant nieniber el, by a raising J liquid in the tank and events the striker from swinging into striking Contact with the bell or ineinllf'hen the level ol' the liquid within the tank has lowered a predetermined extent the striker 5l is to swing` into striking contact with the nieniber l and thereby sound an audible nlarin which. will indicate the low level of the li uid The swinging movement o" the striker to sound the sarni is caused by the motion of the vehicle with. which the 'tank associated :ind this reason the nieinber al should be r ried by the tank to respond to the there-uf.
-n thi forni of the invention illustrated in .ie gong' or resonant member l5 is suspended within the tank from the Cap nienibe' .3 b v a 'tube lo, which has its inopening and closing inoren'ienis relative, to aid opening. A rod 2l extends Gown li' the `valve 2() through 'the tubes lo and l? and carries striker 22 within the or resonant member l5. the striker beinel swing-ingly connected to the rod by a link 23. A lloat 24 is attac-hed to the lower end ol' the striker 22 and this float when restingon the liquid Within the tank prevents aA swinging ol the striker into audible striking contact with the gong. When the -level of the liquid is raised `from the alarm sounding; point the float effects a raising of 'the connections between it and the valve 2O and a closing' of said valve so that if there should be a slight tapping of the reason of@ the aferal infiiveinents of the float with 'the uuid the sound will not be carried Without 3v lli'lien the valve :20 is open and struck the alarm is distinctly lout the tank. .in this form of Cil " Having thus .l claim as new, v.ters Patent, is,-
, l. ln a motor vehicle, a liquid containing device associated therewith and including a bell -with. a svvin'gfloat member Within lt'is evident in each :torni of the invenf .cla-piper for the'i-nvention both the tube 16 anti rod' 21 are longitudinally adjustable to suit the height at whichv it is desired to place the gong and the tank.
member, such Elo-at may he omittedasthe submergence of the striker member itself in the liquid will prevent the member from striking against the gong or resonantl lmem ber with si'iiic'ieiit force to sound an alarm. As soon as the liquid would lower below *die Striker member, such the gong. Y y
Wish it understood that my invention is'not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or forni'of the parts,`as it is capable of numerous modifica-tions and changes without departinpr from the spirit (if-'the claims.
described my invention, what and desire to secure by Lettank, an audible alarm and a float suspended from the ing chipper,
swinging movements therewith is raised or ioat member. into operative form illustrated aV float is shown in connection with the lstriker a member would be free to Yswinginto' alarm sounding contact with ijseueee and adapted to coact with the clapper to pre- 'vent the sounding ofan alarm except when the .liquid is at or below Aa predetermined low levelin the tank.
l2in a vehicle. a liquid containing. tank, a resonant member suspended within the 'tank and haviiigi` a passageway extending therefro'm'to without the tank, a fate for closing saidJ passageway, a striker for the 1 resonant meinber'and connectedto said gate,
and a float operable to close the gate and to render the striker member inoperative when the liquid is above a predetermined level in thetank.. i' v i 3. inra vehiclea liquid containingr tank lia-ving;f an opening in ,its upper portion, an
alarm device within the tank adapted to sound an alarm wheiitlie liquid in the tank lowers below a predetermined level, a valve for-closingv the -tank opening, automatically operable" to open the valve when the liquidin the tank has lowered a predetermined extent.
14. ln a vehicle, a liquid containing tank having! an o'peniii;r in its top, a. cap torremovably closing said opening and having an opening therein, an audible'alaini nieaus vsusiended from the rap through the tank opening,r and opera-ble to sound an alarm when the liquid in the tank lowers below a 'predetermined level, a valve for closini,r the cap openingr, and float operated incans for operatingr and. means the valve to close the capopening when the liquid is above a predetermined level, and viceversa.
In testimony whereof 'l have hereunto signed my'name to this specification.
