Description

W. GRAH.
AUDLBLE LOW LIQUID LEVEL ALARM. APPLICATION HLED 0e14, 1920.
1,371,365. Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
INVEN'TELH ing to be a full, clear, and exact description- Be it known that LWILLIAM .citizen of the-United States, and a resfdent GB, 0! WATEBVILLF, OHIO.
1,371,365. Original a licant: ma lay a, 1920,
To all whom it may concern."
GRAB, a
of Waterville, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention Appertaining to Audible Low-Li uid-Level Alarms; and I do hereby declare t e followof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the 'chsh'acters of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
This invention relatesgto audible alarms for use particularlyin connection with the liqiqid containing tanks of automobiles to in cate a predetermined low liquid level I therein. j The, object of the invention is the rovision of an improved simple and e clent signal or alarm meansof the class described,
whichis operable by movements of the as.- sociated vehicle to. sound an audible alarm when the li uid in the container is at a predetermined ow level therein. 1
- The" invention is fully describedin the "following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereofds illustratedin vertical sec tion in the accompanying drawing, with the liquid ata low level pomt in the tank and the signal means operative. v
This application is filed as a division of my former application, Serial Nol 379,232,
' filed May 6,1920.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a liquid tank or container, for instance the gasolene tank. of an automobile, having an opening 2 in its top through which the tank may be filled, which opening is closed by a removable cap 3.
Fixedly carried by the cap at its outer side is a bell, gon or other resonant member 4, which, in t e present instance, is in inverted position. A rod 5 extends from above the bellr4 down through the same'centrally thereof and through the cap 3 into the containei' 1 and carries a fioat 6 at its lower end. The rod 5 is mounted for free vertical movements through its bearing in the cap 3, to permit it toKmove vertically withthe float 3 when rising or falling wit the change of lfevel of theliquid in the tank. The rod 1s pre erably made in sections with- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 879,232. mvlded and this application filed Bctober 4, 1920. Serial No. 414,632.
in the tank, the sectiohs being connected by a turn-buckle 7 to facilitate an adjustment of the length of the rod to'suit the level of the liquid at which it is desired to sound the alarm, as hereinafter more fully described. The rod 5 is. preferably provided at its upper end with a bowed portion 8, and from the upper free end of this bowed portion is 'swingingly suspended a striker 9 so that when the striker 'sdisposed at a predetermined point with n the bell 4- and is swung sufiicientl to have contact withthe bell an alarm wi 1 be sounded. A-tube 10 projects down from the cap 3 loosely around the rod 5 to prevent liquid when splashing within the tank from escaping through the rod re-' I ceiving opening in the cap.
It is evident in the use of this invention. thatthe striker 9 is moved intoand out of operative striking relation to the gong bell 4 by the rising and falling of the float within the tank, which is efiected by. a changing" of the level of the liquid therein.
When the liquid has lowered a predetermined extent the strikerwill then be permitted in its swinging movements, which ished. If it is desired to-change the liquid level at which the alarm is sounded, this maybe accomplished by adjusting the turnbuckle 7 to change the length of the float are actuated by jolting movements of the k 1 wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and" changes without departih gsfrom the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is,
1. In a vehicle, a liquid containing tank,
a resonant member mounted without the tank, a striker associated with the resonant member and operable by movements of the vehicle to strike the mber and sound an alarm when the striker is in a predetermined position, and means carrying the striker and operable by a change of the liq- -uid level wlthin the tank to move. the
striker into and out of operative striking relation to the resonant member.
2. In a vehicle, a liquid containingtank, a resonant member carried by ,the'tank, a float supported by liquid inthe tank, a rodrisin' from the float for vertical movements relat1ve to the tankadja'cent to the resonant member, and a striker member carried by the rod having free swinging movements relative thereto, and movable into and out ing said opemng,-- a resonant member earried by the cap at its outerside, a rod' projecting through the cap for longitudlnal movements relative thereto, a float attached to th'e lower end of the rod for riding on liquid contained in"the 'tank, and a striker ca'rriedby the rod without the cap and movable into and out of striking relationto the resonant member by predetermined vertical movements of the rod- 4.111 a veh'cle',' a liquid containing ant;
having an opening inits top, a removable cap closing sa d opening, a resonant member 'rigld'ly mounted on the. cap
[by and projecting froni the'float through the cap for vertlcal movements with the fl0at, the rod being adjustable to vary its length, and a striker swinginglyvs uspended from,.the outer end of the rod for striking eng ement with the resonant member'when the l quid is at or below a predetermined level'in the tank. In testimony whereof I have hereunto slgned my name to this specification.
