PATENT OFFICE.
R TO NATIONAL CORPORATION 0F CLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
To @ZZ whom it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I,EDWARD L. BENEDICT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view illustrating a preferred form of my improved clamping device and the manner of using the same.
Fig. 2 is a side View and Fig. 3 a plan view of the clamping device itself.
My invention has relation to improvements in clamping devices; and has been more particularly designed to provide a simple and eiiicient clamping device for use in holding in place against curb forms the metallic curb bars which are employed in making concrete street curbs.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings the numeral 2 designates a clamping bar which is formed at one end portion with a depending lug or heel member 3 having an oblique inner face 4 which is in line with the beveled end wall of a longitudinal slot 5 formed in the bar 2. The opposite end portion of the bar 2 is formed with a finger 6 which extends obliquely inward and downward toward the heel member 3. 7 designates a wedge adapted to be inserted through the sl'ot 5, this wedge having an inclined edge 8 adapted to the inclined face 4 of the member 3, and an opposite straight edge 9. The wedge is also preferably provided at its upper end with an aperture 10 to serve as a lifting means and may be provided at its lower end portion with a pin 1l inserted therein after it has been placed through the slot and which will prevent the wedge from dropping entirely out of the slot and becoming lost or misplaced.
The manner in which the device is used will be clearly understood from Fig. 1, in which 12 designates a curb form, 13 a curb bar applied to the inner side of said form in the usual manner and 14 a concrete curbing. The finger 6 is engaged with the inner c urved face of the curb bar and the wedge tightly driven against the outer face of the curb form 12. In this manner the clamping device securely holds the curb bar in the inclined or approximately 45O position shown, while the concrete is being filled in behind it. One or more of these clamps may be used with each length of curb bar, as may be desired. The purpose of the lug or heel member 3 is to provide an extended bearing face for the inclined face of the wedge, thereby preventing any tendency of the wedge to wabble or become misplaced.
`While, as above stated, my invention has been particularly designed for use in holding curb bars in position, it may be used for any other purpose for which it is adapted.
I claim:
1. A clamping device of the character described, comprising a clamp bar having a heel member at one end, a slot therethrough adjacent to the heel member, a finger projecting obliquely inward from the opposite end portion of said bar and toward said heel member, and a wedge adapted to be inserted in said slot, substantially as described. y
2. A clamping device of the character described, comprising a clamp bar having a heel member at one end, a slot therethrough adjacent to the heel member, a linger projecting obliquely inward from the opposite end portion of said bar and toward said heel member, and a wedge adapted to be inserted in said slot, said heel member having an inclined inner surface in line with the adjacent inclined end of said slot and forming an elongated bearing for the wedge, substantially as described.
` 3. A clamping device of the character described, comprising a clamp bar having a heel member at one end, a slot therethrough adjacent to the heel member, a finger projecting obliquely inward from the Aopposite end portion of said bar and toward said heel member, and a Wedge adapted to be inserted in said slot7 said heel member having an inclined inner surface in line With the adjacent inclined end of said slot and forming an elongated bearing for the Wedge, said Wedge having an inclined edge to engage said bearing and having its opposite edge straight, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto Set my hand.
EDWARD L. BENEDICT.
