IWAN OSTAFIJCHUK, OF FORT WILLIAM, ONTARIO, CANADA.
COMBINATION ARTICLE 03 FURNITURE.
Application filed August 9,
T (ZZZ '20 item it may concern:
Be it known that I, IWAN OSTAFIJGHUK, a citizen of Poland, residing at Fort l/Villiam, in the district of Thunder Bay and Province of Ontario,,Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination articles of furniture, and the objects of the invention are to provide an article of furniture which can be used as a chair, or be converted into a table, or converted into a bed.
It is also the object of this invention to adapt the upholstering of the chair as a mattress for the bed, and when converting the chairinto a bed to permit of it being simultaneously extended longitudinally and laterally. I
Many other objects will become apparent as the invention is described more fully in the following specification.
So that the nature of the invention may be more clearly understood, I have illustrated an embodiment thereof, which I shall now describe, after which the novel features of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of my invention when used as a chair.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the chair upholstering removed and extended to form a mattress.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame of the article of furniture extended to form a bed, a part being broken away to show the connection of the endless. chain with the rodsavhich are connected to the ends of' the bed or sides of the chair.
Fig. 4' is a perspective view of my improved device when used asa bed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the chair with the ornamental superstructure rotated about it's hinged edge, to allow the table top to rest thereon.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the underside of the table top. Similar symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several drawings.
In carrying out my invention I employ a rectangular frame 1 of skeleton formation, the side members2, and the front and rear transverse members 3 and 4 being formed as guides as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Slidably mounted in the front and rear transverse members 3 and 4: are rods 5 and 6,
Specification of Letters Patent.

to which the side walls 7 of the chair are attached, these side walls being designed to form the end walls of the bed.
In the front member 3, rods 8 are also slidably mounted and are attached at their outer .ends to the side walls .7 The back of the chair is formed of two sectional walls 9 which are hinged to the side walls 7, and when these sectional walls are open, they lie in the same plane as the walls 7 and constitute therewith the ends of the bed.
A transverse bar 10 is located adjacent to the transversemember 1, and this bar is connected to bars 11 which are slidably mounted in the side members 2 of the frame of the chair.
The bottom 7 is extensible and is connected to the bars 13 which are slidably mounted in the bar 10.
It is advisable when converting the chair into a bed that the sides 7 of the chair, and the back should be simultaneously actuated and extended, and for this purpose, I provide a pair of spindles 14 and 15, which are journaled in the sleeves 16 and 17, and a pair of transversely extending spindles 18 and 19 which are j ourna'led in the sleeves 16 and 17. v r
The spindles 14 and are provided with sprockets with which the cha1ns 2O engage, and the spindles 18 and 19 are provided with sprockets with which the chains 21 e11- gage.
The chains are connected by plates 22 with the rods 5 and 6, and the bars 11 are portion 12 of the side walls Patented June 14, rear. Y
connected by a transverse member 23, which is attached to the chains 21.
The spindles 141 and 18 ar provided with intermeshing gears 24 and 25 and the spindle 141 extends through the front of the frame and is provided with a squared end 26, with which the key 27 engages.
When the spindle 14 is rotated by the key 27, the rods 5 and 6 and the bars 11 will be moved laterally and rearwardly of the chair, and when the back wall 9 of the chair the/same plane, they will form the mattress of a bed, but when used as the upholstering of a chair, then the back 31 is rotated to a right angle, relatively to the seat 29, and the sides are then rotated to a right angle relatively to the seat 29, and the sections 32' If the chair is to be converted into a table,
then the ornamental superstructure 33 and 3% is rotated to he along the outer-faces of the walls 7 and the baclrQQ'and the upper edge of the walls 7 have orifices 35 therein exposed. I
The table top 36 is formed in two sections hingedly connected, and these sections when opened out are held in the same plane by a movable bolt 37. a
U11 the under face of the table, dowel pins 38 are provided to engage with the orifices 35 in the side walls 7, and the under face of the table has recesses 39 which give ('lerfianceto the hinges on thetops of the side members 7 and the back 9, and so prevent the table top from wabbling;
When the table top 36'is not in use, it is folded up and stored at the side of the chair. i
The baclr walls 9 of the chair, will be held in locked position by a catch 40.
When this combination article of furniture is being used, it will when assembled as a chair, have the appearance illustrated in 1. To'convert the chair into a bed it is only necessary to remove the upholstering 28, loosen the catch a0 and engage the'key 27 with the squared end 26 of the spindle 14.
The key 2'? should now be rotated, to rotate the spindle 14, which will through the gears and 25, rotate the spindle 18. The
chains 20 and 21 will now be operated, and
the side walls 7 will be moved outwardly from the frame 1, and simultaneously the member 10 will be moved rearwardly of the said frame.
W hen the side members 7 have been fully extended, and also the member 10, then the back wall 9 of the chair will be rotated into alinement with the walls 7, socompleting the frame of the bed.
The upholstering 28 is'now laid out flat, and placed on the'frame of the bed as shown in Fig. l.
If the article is to be used as atable, then.
the bed is reconstructed into a chair, and
the ornamental superstructure 33 and 34: is rotated about its hinged edges to lie along the outer face of the side walls and back 7 and 9. r i i The table top 36 is new extended and locked in this, position by the bolt 37, and
the top is then superposed on the chair and the dowel pins 38 engaged with the orifices 35. H 1
This combination article of furniture is very compact, and can be readily converted to-the several uses above described.
Vthat I claim as my invention is:
l. A; combination article of furniture comprising a side f 'ame, side members, a sectional back hinged to'the side members, the bottoms of said side members being telescopic, bars slidably mounted in the transverse member of the frame and connected to said telescopic membersfand means for simultaneously moving the side members and the transverse member to form a bed frame. V r
2. A combination article of furniture comprising a side frame, side members, a sectional back hinged to the side members, the bottoms: of said side members being telescopic, bars slidably' mounted in the transverse member of the frame and connected to said telescopic members, means for simultaneously moving the side members'and the transversemember to form a bed frame, a
removable sectional 'upholstering serving when the device is used as a chairand adapt- I 1 ed to be flattened out to form a mattress when the device-1s used as a bed.
comprisinga frame, side members, a sectional backmember hinged to the side members, a transverse member, rods" slidably mou nted'in the frame'attached to the side members, bars s lidably mounted in the frame attached to the transverse member,
mg extensible or telescopic, bars 7 slidably mounted in the transverse member connected member.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
