HOG-RESTRANING- DEVICE.
Application filed September 19, 1919. Y Serial No. 224,802.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it l-:nown that l, CARL `W. PirLioK, citizen of the United States, residing at ahe, in the county of Hughes, State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful llog-ilestraining Device; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the' saine.
The invention relates to restraining devices whereby hogs may be -held in such a position that their heads will extend outwardly between pivoted bars so that a conventional forni of snout holding device may be applied thereto, for holding the snout in such a position that a rin@ may be passed through the same.
A further object is to provide a gangway over which the hogs pass and to provide one end of the gangway with a tilting platform whereby as the same is tilted the hog will slide forwardly to a position where the head will project between the pivoted bars. Also to provide means so that -when the platform is tilted a hog that may be following in the y gangway will be prevented from entering the compartment in which the pivoted platform is located.
`With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement. of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embocinient of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the platform in horizontal position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the platform in tilted position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end carrying the pivoted bars.
Fig. d is a detail sectional view of the detent means for the pivoted bars.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l. designates a gangway, which gangway coniprises the inclined section 2 and the horizontal section 3, which sections 2 and 3 are secured together by means of a rod e, which passes through overlapping eyes 5. rlhe other end of the section 3 is secured by means of hooks and eyes 6 to the rearwardly eX- tending portion 7 of the platform section 8 of 'the gangway. One end of the section el' is provided with a partition 9 having aperV tures 9SL in the ends thereof, ada ated to register w'th an aperture in'thesides of sectidn S and through said apertures pins 9b pass. The edge of partition 9is of greater height from the bottoni of the section 8 than the height of the hogs back. Pivoted on a transversely disposed shaft 11 is a platform 12, said platform being provided with a weight 12b. rlhis platform 12 isA adapted to be tilted from its' position as shown in'llig. 1 to its position shown in Fig. 2, that is after a hog has passed from the section 3 onto the tilting platform 12, said tilting being accomplished by the weight of the-hog' or by means of a lever 13 on one end of saaft 11. Weight 12b returns the platform to nor-1` mal horizontal position after each hog holdingand releasino` operation. A hog passes onto the tilting platform 12, then before another hog can pass onto the same from the section 3, the platform 12 tilts thereby bringing the curved portion 16 into registrttion with the passage under the partition 9 th eroby preventing the second hog from passing onto the tilted platform and keeping him away from the compartment of the section The platform 12 is limited in its upward movement by the cleat 17 and in its downward movement by the cleat 18 and stop` 1.9.
When the hog passes onto the tilting platform 12, the same is tilted which causes the hog to slide headfirst toward the opening 20 and his head to be in a position where it will come through between the pivoted levers 21, said levers being pivot-ed as at 22 at their lower ends and provided with dogs 21a which are adapted to cooperate with a toothed rack 2lb whereby the opening between the levers 21 may be quickly varied according to the sizeof hogs, that being used. rlhe hogs head being disposed and held between the levers 21, a snout engaging loop is then passed around the snout and therefore the hogs head and snout held in position wherein it will be easy for a ring to be passed through the nose.
The invention'having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is :-v
1. In a device of the character described comprising a gangway and a tilting platform section, the inner end of the gangway section being provided with a partition having an animal passage under the saine7 a tilting platform horizontally pivoted within the platform section and inhorizontal alinement with the iooring of the gangway section, means whereby said tilting platform will tilt as the animal moves over the same thereby sliding the animal toward the lower end `thereof when the same is inclined, an adjustable head engaging opening in the end of the tilting platform section and adapted. to receive the animalis head, and a downwardly extending curved member concentric with Athe pivotal point of the tilting platform and carried by the rear end of the tilting platform and adapted to register with the passage under the partition at the end of the gangway section when the platform is tilted thereby preventing animals that may follow on the gangway section from entering the pivoted platform section. after the platform has been tilted. j
2. A device vof the character described comprising a gang way and a tilting platform section, inner end of the gang way section beingprovided with a partition having an animal passage under the same, a tilting" platform horizontally pivoted Within the platform section and in the same horizontal plane as the flooring of the gangway section, the rear end of said tilting platform being in engagement with the end of the gangway flooring, a downwardly extending curved portion carried by the rear end of the tilting platform, said curved portion being concentric with the pivoted point of the platform, weight means disposed between the downwardly extending curved portion and the pivotal point of the platformsaid weight means forming means for tilting the platform to normal horizontal position7 stops for limiting the downward movement of the forward end of the platform at a point where its rear end will be adjacent the lower end of the partition and means for adjusting said partition for limiting the upward movement of the rear end of the platform. y v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this `specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
