To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at White River, in the county of Mellette, tate of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Ice-Cutting Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved machine for cutting or scoring ice, whereby the ice may be subsequently broken in cakes or blocks, and finally removed or gathered for storage;
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple, efficient and practical machine, comprising a portable structure mounted on runners, and carrying oscillatory frames having ice cutting, severingor scoring tools or members, whereby the ice may be cut or scored at right angles, whereby the ice may be removed in rectangular blocks or cakes.
A further object of the invention is to provide means carried by the portable structure to engage the right angle cuts or scores in the ice, for preventing displacement of the structure, while other scores or cuts are being made in the ice.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a crank shaft (which constitutes means for pivoting an oscillatory frame) having a pitman rod connection with a second crank shaft (which is provided with suitable ice cutting or scoring means) whereby revoluble movement may be imparted to the scoring or severing means.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for manipulating the pivotal frames, whereby the scoring or severing means may perform its functions.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved ice cutting or scoring machine constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a suitable portable structure or frame comprising the top 2, the runner 3, and mounted upon the frame is a suitable motor A, the shaft 5 of which has a pulley 6. liiounted in bearings 7 (which are secured at 8 to the top of the frame) isa shaft 9, and arranged axially therewith is a shaft 10, which is mounted in a suitable bearing 11. A pulley 12 is carried by the shaft 9 and is provided with a belt 13. Also movable with the shaft 9. is a friction cone 1% Rotatable with the shaftlO is a pulley 15, which is connected to the pulley 6 by the belt 16. Keyed to the shaft 10, as shown at 17, to rotate with said shaft, but slidable thereon, isa friction cone 18. Pivoted upon a suitable standard 19 is a lever 20, the forks 21 of which are provided with pins 22 to engage the groove 23 of the friction cone 18,whereby, as the lever is moved in onedirection or the other, the cone 18 may be moved toward and from the female friction cone 1%, whereby the shafts 9 and 10 may be coupled or uncoupled. Mounted in suitable bearings 24 is a shaft 25 having a crank 26. Pivoted on the shaft 25 is an arm or frame 27, the lower free end of which has a shaft 28 journalcd therein. The shaft 28 is provided with a suitable circular saw or cutter 29, and one end of the said shaft 28 has a crank arm 30. The crank 26 and the crank arm 30 are ronnected by the pitman 31. By means of the collars 32 (which are secured by pins 33 on the shaft 25), the arm or frame 27 is prevented from moving axially. A bevel gear 3 f forms an integral part of one'of the collars 32.
Mounted in the bearings 35 of the supporting structure or frame, and extending at right angles to the shaft 25, is a shaft 36,
provided with a crank 37. Collars 38 are secured by pins 39 on the shaft 36 to hold the shaft from moving axially. The collar of the beveled gear 10 is secured by means I of the pin Al on one end of the shaft 36, and it will be noted that the beveled gear 40 meshes with the beveled gear 34, whereby power may be transmitted from the shaft 25 to the shaft 36. The arms or frames 12 are pivoted on'the shaft 36, and by means of the collars 43 (which are secured on said shaft 36 by the pins 4 1) the arms or frames 42 are held adjacent two of the bearings 35, but
in such wise that the arms or frames may be oscillated vertically, and, as one body. A shaft is journaled in bearings of the lower ends of the arms or frames l2and is provided on its opposite ends with circular saws 46, used for cutting or scoring the ice. The shaft 45 has a crank 47, which is connected to the crank 37 of the shaft 36 by the pitman 48. A suitable lever 49 is provided, and is constructed in the form of a loop, on the end of which a handle 50 is arranged. The end portions of the rod from which the loop handle is constructed are bent to extend in opposite directionsand through the bearings 51 of the arms or frames 42, whereby the lever is pivotally connected with said arms or frames, By virtue of the collars 52 (which are secured by pins 53 on the end portions of the rod of the loop lever) the end portions are held in position and against axial movement. It is to be observed that the shafts 25 and 36 not only furnish power to the cutters or severing members, ,but also constitute pivot means for the oscillatory arms or frames. Pivotally mounted in a bracket 54L (which is carried by the arm or frame 27) is a lever 55, to be handled suitably for manipulating the oscillatory arm or frame 27. This lever 55 is curved upwardly and'over the portable structure or frame, and near its handle 56, it is provided with a plurality of apertures 57, any one of which may receive a lug 58 of the standard 59, which is disposed upon the top of the structure or'frame 1, in order to hold the oscillatory arm or frame 27 in different positions; Extending through one of the side runners of the portable structure or frame, and adjustably secured thereto by the nuts 60, are the arms 61, the outer portions of which terminate in downwardly right angle extending portions 62, terminating in blades 63. In the present case, the cuts or scores 66L may be understood as extending longitudinally, while the cuts 01 scores 65 extend transversely. A suitable bracket 66 is, secured at 67 to one of the side runners of the structure, and extending transversely of the bracket and adjustably secured therein by means of the nuts 68, are the rods 69, which terminate in downwardly dinal movement of the portable structure, when scoring or cutting ice. The blades 63 of the arms 61 engage the longitudinal cuts or scores 64:, thereby preventing transverse movement of the structure, when the scoring or cutting members are in operation.
In the operation of the machine, the portable structure is first drawn over the surface of the ice by attaching suitable draft means to the members a, and as the machine reverses the ice, the cutter or scoring member 29 is manipulated, in order to make the initial score or out, by which the machine is subsequently guided, when making the second cut or score longitudinally and so on until all longitudinal scores are formed in the ice, The portable structure is then moved intermittently, whereby the transverse cuts or scores may be formed.

In an ice cutting machine, a portable frame work, a pair of crank shafts mounted in bearings of the frame work at right an-' gles to each other and having their adjacent portions provided with beveled gear connections, two sets of arms, one set consisting of apair of arms pivotally mounted upon one crank shaft, the other consisting of a single arm pivotally mounted on the other crank shaft, a stud crank shaft mounted in the free end of the single arm'and provided with a revoluble cutting tool, a link connecting the crank arm of the stud crank and the crank of theshafton which the single arm is pivotally mounted, a crank shaft mounted in the free endsofsaid pair of arms and provided with a revoluble cutting tool on each end, said revoluble cutting tools being mounted in bifurcationsof the arms, a link connecting the crank of the last named crank shaft and the crank ofthe shaft on which said pair of arms is pivotally mounted, and means whereby revoluble movement may be imparted to one ofthe crank shafts for rotating the rotary cutting elements.
