FOLDING BED.
Specification of LettersPatent. V
Patented June "7, 1221.
Application filed May 21,1920. Serial No. 383,202.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOSEPH I. HIGGINs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 4
This invention relates to my improved folding bed covered by Letters Patent No. 1137402 granted me on April 27, 1915 in which I claimed a folding bed of the mantel type which is arranged to be raised toa vertical position against a wall so as to occupy minimum amount of floor space, and also to provide a shelf for supporting ornamental or other articles. My present invention consists in improvements in the construction of the legs and other details of the folding bed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which it is understood that the drawing illustrates only one example of the invention, and in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of thebed in a vertical position against the wall.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the curtain of thebed strapped back ready for lowering said bed to a horizontal position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bed in a horizontal position.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the bed in a vertical position, partly in section.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bed in a horizontal position, being partly in section.
Fig. 6 is a perspective fragmentary view of one end of the bed resting on a supporting bracket.
Fig 7 is a perspective view of one leg of the bed with its brackets.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the leg bracket.
Fig. 9 is a central sectional view through leg and base.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 10 indicates any standard spring frame which is usually provided with a rear side bar 11 and a front side bar 12.
- The bar 11 is supported in the forked end extension 17 which is adapted to correctly.
position the side bar 11 with respect to the wall 18. As usually constructed, the spring frame 10 includes an angle strip 19 at each end, to one leg of which is hooked a plurality of coil springs 20. These coil springs are in turn hooked to a metal strip 21 which is parallel to the angle strip 19 andhas secured to it at right angles, parallel strips 22 which support any form of Woven wire mesh (not shown), and amattress 23. The forked end 13 of the bracket 14 is adapted to allow the bed to be raised to a vertical position resting against the wall 18 as shown in Fig. 4, and in this position the mattress is supported on edge by means of a strip 24 which may be of wood. This strip 24 is provided with a screw eye 25 screwed into its edge adjacent each end, said screw eye also engaging a loop of one of the springs 20 so as to support said strip 24 and the mattress 23. Loops 26 are secured to the edge of the strip 24 opposite the screw eye 25 by means of screws 27 and said loop serves to engage one end of a strap 28, said strap being provided with a buckle 29-which engages a similar strap 30. A shelf 31 is positioned abutting the side of the spring frame 10 opposite the strip 24 and is held securely in position by means to be hereinafter described. A loop 32 similar to the clip 26 is secured to one edge of the shelf 31, and the strap 30 is secured to said loop. Thus when the straps 28 and 30 are fastened tightly together by means of the buckle 29 the strip 24 is held flush against one edge of the mattress 23, the other edge of the mattress is fiush against the shelf 31, while said straps hold said mattress and a plurality of pillows 33 securely in position while the bed is in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to hold the shelf 31 securely in position abutting the spring frame 10, a bracket 34 is provided which is preferably of cast metal, and an integral laterally extending base 35 is formed on one end of said bracket 34, said base being fastened to the shelf 31 by any fastening device such as screws 36. The end of the bracket 34 opposite the base 35 is formed into a semicircular grip 37 which is so shaped as to fit around the side bar 12. A pin 38 extends laterally through the bracket 34 and is securely held thereby so that a semicircular clam 39 may be removably secured to said 40, one on each side of the bracket 34, said hooks engaging the ends of the pin 38, so as to pivotally secure the clamp 39 to said pin. Thc free end of the grip 37 registers with the free end of the clamp 39, and said ends are joined securely together by means of a bolt 41, said bolt being provided with a thumb nut 42 which may be tightened so as to draw the grip 37 and clamp 39 tightly together about the side bar 12, and thus hold theshelf 31 in position abutting the spring frame 10. The inner surfaces of the grip 37 and clamp 39 adjacent the side bar 12 are provided with teeth 43 which engage said side bar 12 and prevent the bracket 34 from being rotated about said side bar. The bracket 84 is formedon the side adjacent the grip 37into a pair of parallel arms 44, one on each side of said bracket which are joined together opposite said bracket by means of an integral member 45 so as to form an opening46 which is substantially the same shape as .a leg 47 which extends therethrough. One end of the leg 47 is provided with a pair of lugs 48 each of which engage one of the arms 44 so as to rigidly support the leg 47 ina substantially vertical position when the bed is in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 5. The end of the leg 47 opposite the lugs 48 is provided with a base 49 which may be removable from said leg and is adapted, when the bed is in a horizontal position, to rest on the floor, while when the bed .is in a vertical position as shown inFig. 4, it is adapted to engage the arms 44 and prevent the leg 47 from falling out of the opening 46. The base 49 is mounted on a square section 49 on the leg 47 and is secured thereto by a screw 49 engaging a washer 49,. When the bed is in a vertical position, the entire inner mecha nism is hidden from view by means of a curtain 59 whirhis fixed to the edge of the shelf 31 opposite the loops 32 and hangs downwardly therefrom. In order to prevent the curtain 50 from resting on the floor when the bed is in a horizontal position, the lower end of said curtain is looped over the side bar 11, and between the two side bars, the curtain is supported by straps 51 which extend longitudinally of the bed and are fixed to the end angle clips 19 by means of clips 52. In order to allow the legs 47 to be moved outwardly beyond the curtain 50, a
slit 5? is provided in the upper end of said curtain adjacent each leg 47.
When not in use the bed stands in an up-.
right position as shown' in Fig. 1, and the curtain 50 presents a neat appearance. In this position any ornamental objects may be placed upon the shelf 31. When it is desired to lower the bed for use, the curtain 50 is tucked behind the. side bar 11, the straps 51 are joinedtogether so as to secure said curtain to the lower side of the bed, the legs 47 are pulled outwardly through the slits 53 in the curtain 59, and thebed is then lowered to a horizontal position as shown in Figs. 3 and ,5 by rotating it about the side bar 11 which is supported in the fork 13 of the bracket 14. The straps 28 are then unbuckled from'the straps 30 and the bed is ready for use.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: V
