To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIXON L. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dome- Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinged cover supports.

The object of my invention is to provide a support of this character adapted to h old a cover of any character in a raised positlon, so that access may be had to the receptacle, and also provide means whereby said support may be readily released for closing the cover as well as means for locking the cover closed.

Another object of my invention is to provide a cover support in which the whole mechanism is contained within the receptacle and has a neat appearance and at the same time provides a cheap, simple and efiective structure having certain details of structure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a graphophone, showing the position of the releasing mechanism in respect to the cover;

Referring now to the drawings,.1 repre sents a graphophone which has the usual dome or cover 2 hinged at its rear end,'and adapted to'be-raised and held in its raised position for placing a graphophone record thereon as well as the reproducer for playing the record. While I have shown this specific application of my inventlon, it will be understood that the same may be used on any kind of a receptacle having a cover whether it be of the dome form or perfectly flat.

Se- 2' cured in said opening 4 is a housing 6 made of a slngle sheet of metal and comprising an upper flat plate 7 secured to the partition 3 by means of screws 8 and provided with an elongated slot 9, through which the support- 1ng link 10 passes, as will be later described. The flat plate 7, at one side, has an-integral downwardly extending portion 11, which has a wing portion 12 bent back upon the portion 11 and spaced therefrom forming the guide for the supporting link and the locking rod, as will be now described. 11 and 12 are held in their spaced relation by means of screws 13 and 14', which also serve as guides for the supporting link, as fully shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The said plate and wing portion has L-shaped oppositely arranged

15 and 16 which allow theinsertion of the double hooked end 16 of the locking rod 17. The hooked end 16 of the rod 17, as heretofore stated, is bent laterally and then downwardly at 18, and after insertion in the L-shaped slot' the downwardly bent portion engages the outer face ofthe wing portion 12 and prevents thetransverse movement of therod and during the normal operation the rearward movement "of the rod is not sufficient to allow the hooked end to reach the vertical portion of the L-shaped if slot,'so that it is impossible for the rod to move out of its normal operative position.

The rod 17 extends forwardlyand passes and surrounds said rod andthe outeryfa'ce of said'wall-is'provided with an enlarged recess 19, and the end of therod with a cap 20screwed or otherwise secured thereon, and of a diameter slightly-'lessthan that'of'the recess, whereby the button may be pushed in for forcing the rod downwardly. Surrounding the rod within the recess is a coiled spring 21, having one end which engages the cap 20 and the opposite end engaging the washer 22, loosely resting on the bottom of the recess, so that the button and rod are normally held in an outward position.

The supporting'link intermediate its ends is provided on its inner edge with a notch 23 adapted to be engaged by the laterally bent portion of the hooked end of the rod and lock the dome or top in its lowered position. The lower end of the link is provided with a notch 24:, and its extreme lower end has a hooked ektension 25, which extends beyond the inner-edge of the link and engages the lateral portion of the hook carried by the rod and prevents the link from being withdrawn from between the

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the spring 21 normally holds the rod 17 outward, causing the lateral bent portion of'the rod to bear against the inner edge of the link 10, and when the dome or cover is closed, it enters the notch 23 in the link 10 and holds the dome or cover closed so that it can not be released. To open the cover or dome the button or cap 20 is pushed in forcing the rod 17 inwardly, which causes the lateral portion of the hook to travel out of the notch 23 and the cover can be opened by hand. As soon as the cover is started upwardly, the button or ca is released and the lateral portion frictiont l ly engages the rear edge of the link and when the cover has nearly reached its upward limit of movement, the lateral portion of the hook enters the notch and prevents the downward movement of the link and supports the dome or cover in its raised position. Should the cover be carried further the hook 25 will engage the lateral portion of the hooked end of the rod and prevent the link from being withdrawn from between the

11 and 12. If it is desired for any reason to raise the cover further than allowed bythe link, a'continued pressure on the cap or button will move the lateral portion of the hook be ond the hook 25.

aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i

1. In a lid support and lock, the combination with a receptacle and its cover, of a link pivotally connected to the cover and having notches in its rear, edge, a plate having a guide for said link, a sprin pressed rod extending from the front of t e receptacle and having a hooked end extendin through the plate and adapted to enter t e notches in the link. y

.2. In a lid support and lock, the combinapivotally connected to the cover and having notches in its rearedge, a plate secured to the receptacle and having a wing portion bent over thereon and spaced therefrom forming a guide for the link, a spring pressed rod extending from the front of the receptacle and having a hooked end eXtending through the plate and wing portion and engaging the rear edge of the link to enter the notches therein, and said hooked end of the rod having a downwardly bent portion on the outside of the wing of the late to pre vent the transverse movement or the rod in the plate.

4. In a lid support and lock, the combination with a receptacle and its cover, of a link pivotally connected to the cover and having notches in its rear edge,a horizontal plate secured to the receptacle and having a slot through which the link passes, one edge of said plate being turned downwardly and havin a wing bent back paralleland spaced therefrom having oppositely arranged L- shaped slots, screws connecting the wing and plate and forming guides for the link, a spring pressed rod extending from the front of the receptacle and havin a horizontal laterally turned end terminatlng in a downwardly bent portion adapted to be'inserted through the L-shaped slot andv the downwardly turned portion engaging the outerface of the wingto retain the rod against lateral inove nent, the laterally turned end of the rod belng adapted to enter the notches in the link.
