I Application filed April 11, 1921. Serial No. 460,340.
This invention relates broadly to stencils of multiple character type and it has for its primary'obj ect to provide an improved hand tool whereby any of a series of characters may be readily applied to or impressed in articles of wood, metal, or the like.
A further object is to provide a steel stencil embodying a rotary'disk'and an im-' pact shank or head which are so associated that the force of the blows applied to the latter is distributed over a relatively large area ofthe peripheral surface of the disk instead of being received by a pivot or axle in the manner usual tosuch devices.
A still further object is to provide device of the character mentioned embodying means whereby is visually indicated the -par ticular character which is: disposed in open ative position,
In describing the invention in detail, ,ref-
erence is herein had tothe accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation'of the invention}; f Fig. 2 is'an'edge view of the same; and- F 3 is'a broken detail section of the imcircular disk having formed on its periphery atspaced intervals a series-of" characters 2, those herein shown being'numerals. A central pivotpin 3 carried by said disk has its ends received in longitudinal slots 4 formed in opposite parallel yoke members 5 carried by or formed integral with a shank or head 6 which overlies a small portion of the periphery of the disk and extends radially outward from the latter.
Attached rigidly to, or formed integral with, said head 6 is a saddle plate 7 which extends in opposite directions a substantial distance from said head. Said saddle plate is arcuately curved to correspond with the curvature of the circumferential edge, or periphery, of the disk and is adapted to seat closely upon said periphery. So seated, the force of hammer blows delivered to the head will be evenly distributed over the entire Specification of Letters Patent. j

plate.-
:Provided in theperiphery of the disk at suitably spaced intervals are sockets. 8 in which studs 9 carried by the saddle plate 7 rsicE,
thedisk contacted by are received when said plate is properlyseated, said sockets being located so that when a desired character is disposed in ahnementwith the yoke, the studs 9 will be interengaged with two thereof-and the disk and the yoke will therebyv be properly ment. 7 r One of the yoke members 5 has its end prolonged and shaped to form a pointer or indicator 10 which is' adapted to visually indicate the character which is disposed in operative posltion, there being provided on the adjacent side or face of the disk, as on a dial, a series of characters 11 corresponding to those on the periphery of the disk,
] corresponding characters on the face and disposed in radial alineperiphery being ment. v
To prevent mutilation of characters 2 which underlie the head 6 of the yoke when thetool is being operated, asocket 12 is socket being adapted to receive therein such underlying character.
positioned and locked against relative moveprovided in the under side of said head, said i When the tool is to be used for applying I a certain character 2, the yoke is elevated to the limit permitted by the slots 4 engaged. by the p1votp1n 3, and the 'diskis then. ro-

What is claimed is 1. A multiple character stencil comprising a diskhaving a series of characters on its periphery, a centrally disposed pivot pin carried by said disk, a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said disk and having slots in the parallel members thereof, said pin being received in said slots, an impact head formed on said yoke, and a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted to seat on the periphery of said'disk.
2.- A multiple character stencil comprising a disk having a series of characters on its.
tated -to carry the corresponding character periphery, a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said disk and having an impact head, a pivotal connection between said yoke and said disk, and a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted to seat on the periph ery of said disk.
3. Amultiple' character stencil comprising a disk having a series of characters on its periphery, a yoke disposed in straddling re lation to said disk and having an impact head, a pivotal connection between said yoke and said disk, a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted to seat on the periphery of said disk, and means permitting radial outward movement of said yoke for unsea ing said saddle plate. I
4;. A multiple character stencil comprising a disk having a series of characters on its periphery, a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said, disk and having an impact head, a pivotal connection between said yoke and said disk, a saddle plate carried by said.
yoke and adapted to seat on the periphery of said disk, and means permitting radial outward movement of said yoke for unseating said saddle plate,-and interlocking means preventing relative rotary movement of said disk and said yoke when said saddle is seated.
5. A multiple character stencil comprising a disk having aseries of characters disposed in spaced relation on its periphery, a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said disk and having the parallel members thereof pivotallyr'connected to the axis of said disk, said connection permitting a limited range of radial movement of said yoke, an impact head formed on said yoke, and a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted for movement with the latter into and out of seating relation to the periphery of said disk, said plate carrying, means for interengagement with said disk whereby the. latter is secured against rotationf 1 p 6. A multiple character stencil comprising a disk having a series of characters disposed in spaced relation on its periphery,a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said disk and having the parallel members thereof pivotally connected to the axis of said disk, said connection permitting a limited range a disk having a series of characters disposed in spaced relation on its periphery, a yoke disposedin straddling relation to said disk and having the parallel members thereof pivotally' connected to the axis of said disk.
said connection permitting a limited range of radial movement of said yoke, an impact head formed on said yoke, and a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted for movement with the latter into and out of seating relation to the periphery of said disk, said disk having sockets provided in its periphery, and said plate having studs torseating in said sockets, said plate having a socket in its under igace tor the reception of one of the series of characters. J
8. A multiple character stencilcomprising a disk having a series of characters disposed in spaced relation on its periphery, a yoke disposed in straddling relation to said disk and having the parallel members thereof pivotally connected to the axis of said disk, said connection permitting a limited range of radial movement of said yoke, a radially disposed impact head formed on the outer end of said yoke, and a saddle plate carried by said yoke and adapted for movement into and out of seating relation to the'jperiphery of said disk, a pointer formed on the end of one of the voke members, and a series oi characters disposed on a side of said disk, said pointer and the last mentioned series being adapted to cooperate for visually indieating the character of the first series which occupies operative position.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
