rEhe object of my invention is to supply steam-boilers with an instrument by the use of which the fire may be expeditiously reduced or extinguished7 curtailing thereby expenses and diminishing accidents. My invention consists of a hollow tube extending through both sheets of a steam-boiler, with lateral perforations.
The aperture of the tube `toward the re may be opened or closed by a movable bolt acting as a valve, which either allows the admission of the water from the boiler or shuts off the same, giving thereby perfect and quick control over the fire in the fire-box.
In the drawing, A represents the steamboiler; B, the lire-box. Atube,(l, Figs. l and 2, connects the sheets of the boiler, being tightly secured or otherwise tted therein. The hollow of the tube is, towardthe firebox, reduced in width inthe shape of a funnel, and opens by au aperture, a, to the lire. A requisite number of holes, b, perforate the tube, and establish the admission of the steam from the boiler to the lire-box. A 'bolt or shaft, D, of smaller diameter than the tube, moves freely therein by screwing into a projection, d, of the tube, applied at the outside of the boiler, the motion being produced by a crank or wheel, E. A conical head, c, of bolt D acts like a stopper or valve on the funnelshaped part ot tube C, opening or closing the aperture a, according to the turning ot' wheel E. By loosening the screw-bolt D the valve c is gradually withdrawn from the aperture a, allowing the water to pass through the perforations b and aperture a to the lirebox. By turning bolt D in the other direction,
the aperture a is closed, and the steam counection interrupted. By the admission of a greater or less quantity of water the nre may, at will, be either reduced or extinguished, and thereby a full controlover the same be obtained. If the ends of the tube O are properly attached by screws to the inside of the boiler, the middle portion of the tube C, including that perforated by holes, may be dispensed with, if in practice it is found to irnpede the operation of bolt and valve D c.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent p l. The tube O, with perforations b and aper-` ture ct, inconnection with the bolt and valve'ie'.;`
D c, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The tube C provided with a bolt, and valve D c, and perforations a b, in combination with the furnace orfirebox of a boiler, and the steam and Water space formed contiguously y thereto between the sheets of the boiler, as shown and set forth.
