Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 13, 1920. Serial in. 416,731.
To all whom it may concern:
- wrenches and particularly to socket wrenches and the principal object of the invention is to provide a sim ly constructed and inex-' pensive and dura le wrench which can be easily and quickly attached to the usual socket and is arranged so that the handle can be brought to a position axially alined with the socket or swung sidewise as occasion demands.
A further object is to arrange the wrench so that the handle can be releasably locked in its axial position.
With the above objects in view the inven- I tion consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of arts hereinafter'more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying-drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete wrench showing the head -situated above the socket.
" vided at the top with a depression or indent Fig. head end of the wrench and also through the socket.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the socket.
In the'dr awing likecharacters of reference indlcate corresponding parts in the several figures.
1 is the handle of the wrench which is 1 suitably shaped for gripping urposes. One end of the handle is decrease in diameter as indicated at 2, and to this end ll secure in any suitable manner a fixed shank 3, which has the-forward'end bifurcated .or forked to receive the upper end of thehead 4 which is pivotally fastened to the shank by'aross pin 5 passing through the forks...
The head has the lower ends uare is semi-circular as'indicated at'6 and is pro- 7 which is adapted to' receive a catch 8 s ably mounted in the shank and normally inserted spring 9. I
ressed toward the head by the action of an '2 is a sectional view through the,
, socket support fi e zontal section and the upper on of the head This latterarrangement is such that when the handle 1 1s swung into a position axially alined with the head the projecting end of ends shaped to fit a nut. I might here state that this socket varies in practice depending upon the work and may have a hexagonal opening such as shown at 12 or any other sided opening dependin on the type of nut on which it is-to be used A tool of this kind is particularly useful where one has to get under a machine to do.
the work, such as under an automobile. After having placed the socket on a nut one enters the .head 4 in the socket with the handle straight and then by swinging'the handle to the side can get considerable leverage to undo the nut.
In using the tool to start a nut the handle is brought to a position such that it is axially alined with the socket and then by turning the handle around bya rolling action between the hands, the work can be easily accomplished.
What ll claim as my invention is 2- A wrench comprising a handle having a bifurcated shank, a socket support having one end mounted and pivotally secured between the branches of the' shank bifurcations and the other end squared, a. nut-engaging socket having a squared bore adapted to s'lidably receive therein, and means carried by the handle and engageable with the rounded end of the socket'support to hold 4 the latter in difierent positions.
Signed at Winnipeg, this 23rd day of September, 1920.
