BELT-BUCKLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The presentinvention has reference, generally, to improvements in buckles; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to improvements in belt buckles of the pivoted clamp-j aw type, the said pivoted clampjaw means being of such novel construction that it readily adjusts itself to any thickness of belt body arranged operatively therewith, and to this end my invention provides a novel construction of clamp-j aw arranged in novel relation to the pivoted loopn1ember from which the same springs.

The invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a simply constructed and easily manipulated belt buckle of the general construction hereinafter described; and, the inventionhas for a further object to provide a novel construction of pivoted clamp-jaw member comprising a clampjaw carried by a pivoted loop-member, said clamp-jaw being more or less yieldable whereby the same will readily accommodate itself in operation to various thicknesses of belt bodies with which the buckle may be employed without unduly straining or stressing the buckle parts while nevertheless providing an adequate gripping or clamping effect when in use.

Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel belt buckle hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the appended claims. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front face view of my novel construction of belt buckle operatively associated with a belt body. Fig. 2 is a rear face view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side edge elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the same, taken on line 4l in said Fig. 1, and drawn on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same, taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 4:.

Referringnow to said drawings, the belt buckle shown therein comprises a main member or buckle. body consisting of aface plate 1, which is preferably outwardly convexed, and which is provided along its longitudinal edges with rearwardly projecting. side flanges 2. Said side flanges are provided, adjacent to one end of the buckle body, with outwardly pressed portions 3 providing, on the inner faces of said side flanges, transversely opposed depressedbearing seats 4. i

The reference-character 5 indicates the transverse base portion of a pivotedloop member from which extends outwardly beyond the adjacent end of the buckle body a loop portion 6. Said base portion 5 is provided at its opposite ends with outwardly projecting journal lugs 7, whichare sprung, respectively, into the depressed bearing seats 4:, thereby pivotally connecting said 100p member between said side flanges 2, and spaced rearwardly from the back or inner side of said face plate 1. Integrally connected with outer edge of said base portion 5, intermediate the outwardly projecting side portions 6 of the loop portion 6, is a clamp jaw which comprises an upwardly and rearwardly curved jaw body 8 projecting toward the back or inner side of said face plate 1, said jaw body 8 terminating in a free gripping or biting edge9 spaced freely above the inner face of said base portion 5, intermediate the latter and the back or inner side of said face plate 1.

Said side flanges 2 are preferably pro- Y vided, adjacent to the opposite end of the buckle body, with another pair of outwardly pressed portions 10 providing, on the inner faces of said side flanges, transversely opposed depressed bearing seats. A pintle I member 11 is provided with its respective ends engaged in said bearing seats, so that the same is mounted to extend transversely between said side flanges 2 and spaced rearwardly from the back or inner side of said face plate 1. Rotatably arranged on said pintle member 11 is a roller member 12.

In attaching a'belt bodyl3 to the buckle, one end 142 is looped and fastened about the free end of said loop portion 6 so as to have a fixed relation thereto. In applying the belt and buckle to the waist of the wearer,the belt body 13 is carried around the waist, and the free end 15 of the belt body is inserted between the back of'the face plate 1 and roller member 12, and then passed between the back of the face plate 1 and the clamp jaw body 8 (the loop member being swung inwardly toward the body of the wearer to rotate said base portion 5 thus swinging away from the back of the face plate 1 the said jaw body so that the" belt endmay be easily moved longitudinally between said parts), v

and then drawn up to tighten the belt body around the waist to the desired degree.

When the belt body is thus adjusted about the waist, the'tension to which the same has been adjusted tends to pull upon the loop member 6, swinging the latter in a direction toward the face plate 1, thereby forcing the biting edge 9 of the clamp jaw 8 against the belt, whereby the latter is firmly gripped between said clamp j aw 8 and said face-plate, and the free end of the belt held unyieldingly against withdrawal from such engaged relation to the buckle.

Owing to the peculiar shape, position and arrangement of the clamp jaw 8 relative to the loop'member 6 and the supporting base portion 5, the said biting edge 9 of the clamp jaw is rendered more or less yieldable, so

that the same will yield when forced against 7 belt bodies of more than ordinary thickness without loss of clamping effect, and so that in all cases the loop member 6 will readily move to normal outwardly projected relation to the end of the buckle body.

2. A belt buckle comprising a body member, a clamp device pivoted to said body member, said clamp device comprising a base portion, a loop member projectingoutwardly from the outer edge of said base portion, and a jaw body integrally formed with said base portion to spring from the outer edge of the latter intermediate the side arms of said loop member, said jaw. body being curved upwardly and rearwardly to provide a free biting edge spaced intermediate the back of said body member and the inner face of said base portion.
