UNITED STATES LEWIS REED, 0F WOODS CROSS, UTAH.
SHEET-METAL FLU ME.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented May 31, 1921.
Application filed April 30, 1919. Serial No. 293,733.
To all to ham it may concern Be it known that 1, Lewis REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'VVoods Cross, in the county of Davis and State of Utah, have invented certain; new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Flumes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal flumes, of the type or character employed for conducting water over long distances for mining, irrigation and other useful purposes where such a structure would serve.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a flume which can be quickly constructed; which will be of such simple construction as to be capable of inexpensive installation; which will make an absolutely water tight conductor and will accomodate itself to weather conditions; and which gen orally in all important respects will prove eflicient and practical.
With these objects in view the invention consists of a flume or conduit embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and claimed herein.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a flume constructed according to the best mode of attaining the desired objects of my invention, and in said draw'ing- Figure l is a central longitudinal sectional view of the flume or conduit, and
Fig. 2 is a t ansverse sectional iew of the invention.
It will be understood that the flume or conduit may be used for conducting water for any purpose and may be supported above the ground or placedin a trench as shown in the drawings, and the invention consists of a series of curved sheet metal sections A, connected at their meeting ends by a lap or male and female joint B, which makes a water tight connection, and adjacent each joint'the sections are provided with a groove C, which receives the yoke shaped clamping or binding member D, one end of which carries a head E, and the other end is formed with threads F, engaged by a clamping nut G, while the ends of the clamping member pass through the clamping plates or brackets H, having one flange J, inclined inward and bearing against the flume, while the other flange K, is secured by fastenings L, to a suitable frame or support M.
The construction shown and described enables the ready and easy packing and shipping of the flume and permits the sections to be quickly assembled and clamped together and secured to a suitable frame or support to form a flume or conduit which may be used for purposes of irrigation, mining, water supply, either in or above the ground, and which in all particulars will perform its functions in a reliable, efficient and practical manner.
I claim l. A flume consisting of abutting sheet metal sections, supports for said sections, each section having groove extending therearound adjacent one end, the said end having a continuous flange thereon parallel to the main body of said section and on the inner side thereof, and on the other end a continuous flange on the outer side of said body and in longitudinal alinement therewith, the flanges on the abutting ends of said sections being interlocked'to form male and female joints, and a clamping member in said groove, the ends of said member being suitably mounted on said supports.
2. A sheet metal flume section having a continuous inwardly extending flange on each end thereof, the flange on one end being on the outer side of the main body of said section and in longitudinal alinement therewith, and the flange on the other end thereof being on the inner side of said body and parallel thereto, which section has a continuous groove adjacent the flange lastmentioned for the reception of a clamping member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEWIS REED.
