of a tillage implement, and it consists in the novel combination and correlation of parts substantially as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims."
Oneof the important purposes of the present invention is to provide a means of simple and. economical construction adapted to afford a maximum number of adjustments of the weed turning member in an economicalandjfacile way, the adjustments 'including the fixing of the member in its various positionslto turn or bend vegetablegrowth in the path traversed by the member in its movement with the implementto which it is applied. v
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary walkingtplow' provided vwith a weed turner constructed in accordance with this invention; 1
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the'members by which the weed turning member is adjustably connectedto an appropriate part ofa tillage implement, and shows also a part of.
said member;
Figs.r-3, 4L, and 5 are detail views ot the threezprincipal members of the means'for attaching the hook to the implement.
Similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
A designates the beam of an ordinary,
hand plow; B the mold'board of the plow bottom; and H'theweed turning member. Thisweed turning, member has an angularly disposed end it which is rigid with the body" of the member, being preferably formed integral therewith, and this angularly-disposed end forms the'part by which the member is wholly sustained from the plow beam by a clamping means which is "so constructed and soengaged with said end that, the weed-turning membermay not only be adjusted "bodily withheference to the clamping means but also may be ad usted upon both vertical and'horizontal axes and may be securely fixed in. any of its various" positions ofadjustment by'the tightening of a single member;
To. this end the clamp includesnafixed. member E, a rotative member F and an axial member G about which the member F' may be rotated when freed for such movement. The fixed member E has means (preferably thosehereinafter set forth) for attaching it to an appropriate part of the beam A. The rotative member F has means (preferably the spaced bearings ff f) in I and F of the clamp but is confined against rotative movement relatively tothe rotative" member F. It is arranged substantially at right angles to the end it of the-weedturning member and constitutes the member a which when tightened fixes the end it of the weed turning member against movement in its bearings e.-relatively to the member F, and also confines the rotative member F against movement away from the fixed member E. The abutting faces of said members E and F are relatively so formed that the tendency of the member F to rotate in the operation of the device will' be resisted when the member G istightened. It will be understood that when the member G is loosened the member F may be turned rela- 1 tively to the member E and the end h of the weedturner may be moved within its bearings in said member F and member G, and, as already stated, the tightening of said member Gr confines the member F and end hagainst such movements.
In the particular exemplification of the invention shown in the accompanying figures of drawing, the confronting faces of a the members E and F are formed with interengaging serrations or teeth, 0, f, respectively for preventing axial movement of the member F when the memberG is tight- I ened, and said member F has its outerend formed with a recess, here shown as provided by spaced ears or lugs, f having openturning member; and the member G has a flattened end G which is fitted in the recess between the lugs or ears f and confined thereby against axial movement relatively to the member F, and said flattened end has an Opening 9' which registers with the openings f Its oppositeend, g, is threaded and provided with a fastening nut G It will be apparent that the end it of the weed turning member extends through the opening 9 in the member G as well as through the openings f in the member F. In practice the appliance is preferably secured to the side of the'beam A, with the end h of the weed turner disposed upwardly. It is also preferred to provide the member H with a hook-end h; The member 'E is rigidly connected to a plate 0 being in practice preferably formed integral therewith. Thls plate C engages the adjacent face of'the. beam A. A second plate D is provided to engage the opposite face of said beam. These plates are connected by bolts 0, having suitable fastening nuts, not shown. By this means, the entire appliance is secured to the beam A atany place in the length of the latter, i. e. 'adjustably longitudinally of the beam.
7 It will be noted that in addition to the adjustment of the weed turning member H toward or away from the mold board, affected by adjusting. the entire appliance along the length of the beam A, said member may be adjusted relatively to the members E, F and G of the appliance, by loosening the nut G and then moving the end 71, of the member H in the openings f and g of the members F and G, and again tightening the nut G when the required adjustment has been made. In this adjustment, the member H is raised or lowered bodily in asubstantially vertical plane, when the appliance is connected to the side of the beam .A, as illustrated.
A further adjust ment, by which the hook end h" may be set at difl'erent selected positions from the ground for smaller or larger weeds is afforded when the nut G is loosened, by turning the members F and G relatively to the member Eand fixing the parts in the required new position by again tightening the nut. In this adjustment the hook moves upon an arc struck from the axis of the member G as a center. When the angularly disposed end 72. of the member H is pivoted in the members F and G a still further adjustment of the hook end it is provided for, as the member H may thenbe turned pivotally in the bearings provided by the openings f and g in the members F and G. Hence, it will be seen the member H may be readily and easily adjusted toany one of a maximum number of difierentpositions in accord with varying requirements, by a Simple and economical structure and correemployed for other uses without departing I from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention what 'I believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A weed turning appliance, comprising a weed turning member having an angularly disposed end rigid therewith, a rotative clamping member having means. forming a bearing within which said end may be rotated, relatively to the member; an axial member extending through the clampingv member and with which said clamping memberand weed turning member may be rotated about an axis which is substantially at right angles to the axis of rotation'of the angularly disposed end of the weed turning member, said axial member having a bearing at one end for the angularly disposed end of the weed turning member and being confined against axial movement relatively to said clamping member and movable longitudinally within thelatter, a fixed clamping member having means for attaching'it to the implement, said axial member also extending through the axis of the fixed member and said fixed and rotative clamping members having abutting faces provided with elements to engage each other and hold the rotative member against rotation when so engaged, and means on the axial member to tlghten and loosen it, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. A weed turning appliance comprising a weed turning member having an angularly disposed end rigid therewith, a rotative clamping member, a. fixed clamping member, saidclamping members having abutting faces provided with elements to engage. each other and hold the rotative member against having afiattened end fitted in the space between said lugs to confine it against axial movement relatively to the rotative member,
and said lugs and flattened end having rotation when so engaged, means for attachalined openings through which the angu v larly disposed end of the weed turning member extends to receive rotative adjustment 30 therefrom and within which said end may be adjusted, relatively to the axial member and rotative member of the clamp, pivotally upon an axis substantially at right angle to 5 the axis of rotation of said members of the clamp and also longitudinally, and means acting through the axial member to bind the angularly disposed end of the weed turning member against the rotative member of the clamp and to hold the latter member against 10 I GROVER C.
