T0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HARKNEss, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inventednew disconnected during the jarring operation of the stem. i
. An object of the invention is to provlde a joint that may be quickly disconnected but capable of withstanding excessive shocks when assembled. 7
Besides the above my'inventionis distin-- guished in the use of a sleeve for covering the joint and accomplishing a more r1g1d construction and protecting the joint from the elements encountered in the use of the stems I i V With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanylng drawlng wherein:
F igurel ,is a side elevation of the joint in assembled position.
Fig. 2 1s a similar view in the opposite direction showing a sleeve that may be used with my invention; v
Fig. 3 is a sectional v1ew.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one section.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the othersection.
the sleeve and its associate parts.
Figs. 7 and 8 are cross sectional views of the joint. j
In the drawing I have shown one manner of carrying out my invention but at the start I wish to call attention to'the'fact that when putting the invention 'into practical use the outline or shape of the diflerent parts may be changed to meet the require .ments. 7 The upper drill stem section 1 is provided with an extension 2 shown inthis particular instance as of a substantial rectangular cone figuration so as to snugly engage the walls of the slot 3 in the lower section 4.,
'lower edges of keys '5 same; and for this sleeve 9 slidably mounted on the sections.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of a portion ofsection in any suitable manner.
In this Specification of l atent; p t dm y 31" 1 construction it will i be seen thatthe joint will be prevented-from being-disconnected in two directions byithe engagement between the sides ofthe extension 2 and the walls'of the slot 3., For thepurpcse the movement of theextension 2;as'*-well as the section 1 in the remaining two direct1ons ,-when the drill stem is provide a pair of keys or. lugs 5011 the lower section 4; that detachably engage correspondinglyshaped slotsl6 in the extension 2.
in operation, I c
To complete the invention the extreme I end of the sectioni4: i'sbeveled-as indicated;
at 7 so as to engage in the correspondingly shaped notches 8 in the upper "section 1;
thus it-Will be seen that thejoint is iiein 'qf forced in all directions.
When. the joint is "drawn from the well 7 i I the upper sectlonmayibe givenan jarcuat'e Y movement'for disconnecting the joint,
this cannot takefplace when the stem-is inthe well as the side of the well will notallow the section to have the proper arcuate movement for. disconnecting the joint. As will be noted more clearly from Fig. 3, the
are beveled downwardly and outwardly. This permits'the tongue or extension 2 of the member 1 to be rocked to the right as considered in this figure, av suflicient distance'to' break the joint.
As will be readily understood, in practice there will be; a very slight amount of unavoidable looseness or play between the parts of the joint/which will be amplysuflicient, in conjunction with the bevel of keys 5, to permit the joint to be readily broken in the manner stated.
Itfmay be found advisable in practice'to,
cover thejoint and materially reinforce the purpose I provide a One end of the cated at '10 so as to engage in groove 11in a collar 12 fixed to the lower is mechanically forced toward the collar 12 Thesleeve by a second collar 13 having a screw thread edengagement 14L with-the. upper section as 1 clearly shown in. Fig. 2. The sleeve is proextending part way of same maybe 0011-,
vided with slots 15 its length so that the tracted when the beveled end 10 thereof engages the groove 11 thereby'throwing the a sleeve into tightengagement with the exterior surface of the sections.
Of course {it is to be understood that thesleveand its asso 60 of preventing ciate parts may be constructed in various other manners than that shown. 7 7
From the foregolng description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that I provide a joint tions being connected by a tongue and siot joint, a sleeve slidable on one of said'sec tions and adapted to fit snugly ab'out said joint, said sleeve being split from one end so vasto permit ready adjustment thereof,
and means forsecuring the sleeve in poSi' tion about the joint and for compressing said sleeve so as to force it into close conuse "tact with and about the joint.
2. Ina device of the character described, an upper section, a lower sectlon, said sec 7 tions being connected by a tongue and slot joint having means for preventing relative longit'udinal movement of the sections, a.
sleeve slidable on one of said sections and adapted to fit snugly about said'joint, said sleeve being split from one end, a member adjustable longitudinally ofthe section carrying the sleeve and in contact with the other end of said sleeve, and means carried by the other section adapted to engage the split end of the sleeve so as to limit ,move ment thereof, said means being also adapted to compress 'the'sleeveso as to cause the same to grip tightly about-the joint.
3. In a device of the character described, an upper section, a lowersection, saidsections being connected by a tongue and slot joint having means for preventing relative longitudinal movement of the sections, a sleeve slidable on said upper section and adapted to fit snugly about said joint, said sleeve being split fromfits lower end and having its lower end beveled downwardly and inwardly, a collar threaded on the upper section and in contact With the upper end of the sleeve, and a collar secured on the lower section and having'itsupper end providedwith a downwardly and inwardly inclined annular recess for reception oi the lower end of the sleeve for limiting movement thereof and for compressing the sleeve soas to cause it-to grip tightly about saic oint. r In test mony whereof I ailix mysi naturc.
