To all whom it may concern.
and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates and particularly to means for holding a gate in closed position or in oppositely opened positions and to means for opening the closed gate in either of two directions and also for closing the gate in either of its opened positions; and has for its object to provide a device that is simple, easily operable and inexpensive andthat can be actuated from a remote point on oppositesides of the closed position line of the gate by a person driving toward the gate fromopposite sides and without having to leave the vehicle in which he or she may be; and a further objectof the invention is to provide an apparatus for opening and closing a swinging gate all of the parts of which are readily accessible and arranged above the'surface of the ground so when necessary; and the invention consists of the construction and details an embodiment of which is'illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed herein.

The gate obviously may be of any suitable style or'type of construction and of suitable material and comprises, in this illustration, a series of horizontal rails 2 with a set of upright stiles or retaining braces consisting of pairs of strip-lil e pieces 3 overlapping the, interposed rail members 2. The lower ends of these latches are sufiiciently spaced to provide a recessfor the interposition of a bolt member 11 which, as the gate swings on its hinges ll-, slides across the lower inclined face 7 of the latches 7 so that thelatter are lifted severally accordlng to the direction of movement of the gate, the opposed latch forming an abutment at its lower front edge against which the bolt 11 will strike when it has come into proper position.
At a suitable distance from and'alining with each other in a plane of the pivot or hinge post 5 is provided a set of latch posts 12, these being so disposed that when the gate 2 is opened in either direction on its hinges H the operative end of the bolt 11 will engage a retaining latch 13, such as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 7, that is mounted on one or the other of the posts 12, as the case may be, and projecting so as to readily rise as the moving bolt 11 passes under its outwardly inclined end 13 to limit the upward and downward movement of the latch 13 are shown as at '14.
While the bolt 11 may be operable in various ways to disconnect it from the re taining latches 7 or 13 it is here shown as 3 of the gate between which the bolt 11 is mounted. The bolt extends rearwardly or toward the hinged end of the'gate and is preferably provided with an everbalancing or weight portion 16 so that the outer end of the bolt .is normally pressed upwardly to sweep into contact with the several latches according to the movement of'the gate.

signed to be rocked on its fulcrum or pivot 15 to lower its outer end from the engaged latch or latches, and this is accomplished by the use of a double acting device comprising a pair of downwardly extending rods 17 arranged on opposite sides of the rear end of the gate to be concurrently and oppositely reciprocated, the rods being guided through bearings 18 on opposite sides of the gate and having their lower ends inturned as, at 19 toward each other to pass underneath of and engage the lower surface of the weighted end of the bolt 16. The upper ends of the rods are pivotally connected as at 20 to a small walking beam or lever 21 disposed transversely across the top rail of the gate and tiltable on a pivot 22 thereon. The upper ends of the rods 17 may be provided with hooks 23 forming the pivots, and in order to prevent the rods from working out of the ends of the lever 21 suitable stop pins 24, Figs. 1 and 5, may be driven into the adj acent portion of the top rail of the gate.
To actuate the walking beam or lever 21 a lever 25 is turnable in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis as the pivot screw 26 extends into a hub 27 that is clamped by the set'screw 28 on the inserted rod or lever 25. The pivot screw 26 extends upwardly through a cap or bearing plate 29 that is attached to the top of the hinge post 5. a One arm of the lever 25 extends slidably through the upwardly extending central portion of the walking beam or transverse lever 21, and the opposite end of the lever 25 is connected to a pair of oppositely extending links 30 and 31. One of these links as 30 is support ed at its outer end in theconcaved or seat forming portion 12 of one of the posts 12 and as in Figs. 1 and 2, and the remote end of the link 30 may be provided with a grip or handle portion 30 to be conveniently grasped by the occupant of a vehicle driving along the roadway in the direction of the arrow a in Fig; 1, so that when the rod 30 is pulled it sweeps the lever 25 in a horizontal direction and in an are indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 with the result, first that the walkingbeam or lever 25 is tilted on its fulcrum and one of the lifting hooks 17 is elevated and carries upwardly with it the adj acent end of the bolt 11 the opposite end of which is lowered from engagement with the yielding latches 7-7 and secondly a further pull on the operating link 30 causes the gate to be swung on its hinges 1- 1 to the fully open position shown in Fig. 2 where the outer end of the bolt 11 engages and is retained by the respective latch 13 on the remote post 12.
Having passed through the opened passageway the occupant of the vehicle can then grasp the handle of the actuating link 31,
Fig. 2, and by pulling on the same will effect, first the tilting of the walking beam 21 on its fulcrum so that one of the rods 17 will lift 7 members 7 and thus the gate will be retained in closed position until the releasing and actuating mechanism is subsequently manipulated.
It is obvious that the device can be opened in either direction by following the above described steps according to the direction of the occupant of the vehicle along the roadway.

1. The combination of a gate hinged to one of the posts, a pair of cooperating latches onthe opposite post, a latch lever fulcrumed on the gate one end of which lever is adapted to be engaged by the latches, a horizontally disposed lever fulcrumed on the top of the post to which the with a pair of posts,-

The combination with a swinging gate of a hinge post and a latch post opposed upwardly yielding latches cooperative to retain the gate in a closed position, ajlatch lever pivotally mounted on the gate having a weighted inner end, its outer end adapted to engage the latches on the latch post, means to actuate said gat and said latch lever to release the gate and pull it open in either direction, said means comprising a lever fulcrumed on the hinge post and having one end engaging a walking-beam pivotally mounted on the gate, to rock it in either direction, said walking beam having downwardly extending rods on its outer ends adapted to lift the inner end of the latch lever against its weight, the opposite end of said lever pivotally connected to oppositely extending ac- WILLIAM F.
