Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
veEOEsE s. WELCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
` COLLAPSIBLE BED.
Original application filed March 11, 1914, Serial No. 823,882. Divided and this application led April 20,
Serial No. 163,337.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. W'ELCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county Ot' Cook and State oi' illinois, haveinvented a certain new and useiul improvement in Collapsible Beds, of which the `following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication.
My invention relates to collapsible bed structures and is more particularly available in connection with metallic bed structures, the object being to provide a bed which when expanded may be capable of accommodating two persons, and which when collapsed is but large enough i'or one. In this way the bed can thus be readily transformed from a single bed to a double bed, or vice versa, the bed when collapsed occupying a small space.
rlhis application is a division oi my prior application Serial No. 823,882, illedfMarch 11, 1914i, issued Aug. 14, 1917.
I will explain one form which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the, accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view ot' a bed constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top View showing the bed in its expanded condition.
Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the bed in its collapsed form, and
Fig. i.l is an end view showing the bed in its expanded condition. A
lily improved bed structure consists ot the side members l5 and 16 suitably held together at the extremities by the collapsible tubes 17, 18 respectively. The bed structure is shown in its collapsed position in Fig. 3.
The object of my invention is to provide a structure to permit the side members 15, 16 to be moved apart so that they occupy the position shown in Fig. 2, thus to change a single to a double bed. For this reason the side trames are provided with the endv tubes 17 adapted to telescope with the rods 18 mounted at the extremities of the side arms 16. Cross braces 19 and 2O associated with the legs 21 and 22 respectively similarly permit of extension and retraction. The tubes 17 are likewise provided with Collars Specification of Letters Patent.
23 having downwardly extending ears 24 adapted to pivotally support auxlliary legs 2.o which are pivotally associated with the links 26. The links are pivotally mounted upon ears 27 carried by the side members 16.
Vhen the bed is collapsed the foot 25 vis rotated about its pivot so that it rests underneath the tube 17. The links 26 are, when collapsing the bed, also moved upwardly from the position they occupy in Fig. a. When the bed is in the collapsed condition therefore the parts 25 and'26 are out of the way, but when the bed is extended these parts provude additional means of support at that portion ot the bed structure where the additional support is required. Chains 28 regulate the proper distribution ot' the resilient elements when the bed is extended, Longitudinally extending supportmg strips 29 are provided which are mounted by means oi' springs 30 upon the tubes 17, and additional strips 31 are mounted by means of springs 32 and two slidable collars 38 mounted upon the rods 18. yIn this way the mattress supporting portion of the bed is also collapsible as shown.
From what has been thus described the nature Oi my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. Having however thus described one embodiment of my invention, what `l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An adjustable folding bed structure of the character describedk comprising two opposing side members, Jfoot members adapted to be folded against said side members, telescopically operable means connecting said side members, mattress supporting means extending between said connecting means, telescopically operable means connecting said toot members, an auxiliary foot for said bed intermediate said side members, and means operable by the telescopic closing of the bed structure to move said auxiliary ioot out of its operative position.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe .my Vname this 13th day of'April, A. D.,
GEORGE S.WELCH.
Witnesses: Y
HAZEL A. JONES, MAX W. ZABEL.
