PHOTOGRAPHERS HEAD-SCREEN.

Be it knownthat I, JULIUs J. SCHUER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Clinton, county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Photographers I-Iead- Screens, of which the following is a specification.V

This invention relates to screens used by photographers for obstructing or reflecting light or correcting or modifying the illumination of subjects or objects being photographed, such as the head-of a person.

The screen ordinarily used for thc purposes above mentioned, comprises an annular frame supporting a fabric and at-l tached to an, adjustable rod carried by a vertically adjustable standard.

The principal object of my 'invention is to provide an improved way of attaching the fabric or cover to the annular frame and to make the annular frame collapsible, z'. e.,

and taken apart so as tooccupy a small space. VA further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the entire device may be collapsed and made to Yoccupy a smallspace, rendering it Vreadily portable.

In carrying out my invention I provide an annular frame made in sections, provided with'locking devices or catches, whereby they may be quickly connected and as readily separated. The frame is provided with a threaded boss to receive one end of a supporting rod and the fabric is preferably formed with a hem Within which is inclosed an elastic band which enables the fabric to be stretched at its periphery while being applied to the frame and to be then automatically tightened whenproperly applied. The hemmed portion is turned over toward the middle of the cover, providing an annular space to receive the annular frame and the edge portion of the cover is formed with a hole to receive a boss carried by one of ,the annular frame sections, the arrangement being such that 1n applying the cover to the annular frame the boss is passed through the hole and then the cover is applied to the annular frame by having its peripheral portion o enedup and then re- Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. -8 is a perspective view indicating how the entire device, including the stand, the annular frame, the inclined supporting rod and the cover, may be folded, collapsed and brought together to occupy a small space, which makes it readily portable.

The head screen is supported on a stand A, comprising a post or standard having a tubular section a, carrying a frame a2, to which are hinged supporting legs o, connected by links to another frame b3, carried by a tubular telescoping section @'the arrangement being such that the legs may be swung inward toward the post to occupy a substantially` parallel relation therewith. The section a carriesY a spring catch C, havsection t and adapted to engage a hole c in the section c. When the catch engages the two holes c', c3, the post sections c and are locked, but by pressing on the lug c the locking devices may be released and the post sections made to move longitudinally, the one over the other.

The stand as Whole may be collapsed and made to occupy a small space. Two of the legs lb and 2b are longer than the others and extend under the screen. In this Way the overturning of the stand by; the Weight of the screen is prevented. The links b Which connect the legs lb and 2b tothe frame o3 are slotted as indicated at s and these slots receive pins s carried by the legs. In this Way all four legs may be readily collapsed and made to lie straight and parallel With the stand.

The clamp carries a rod G, Which supports the scr en proper. This rod may be adjusted length- Wise in the clamp and the clamp may be turned so as to hold the rod at any desired inclination.

By reference to Fig. 9, it will beobserved that the disks Z are supported on a bracket M which extends upwardly from a plug m Which lits into a round hole in a block m2 secured as indicated at m to Vthe upper section at of the stand. rIlhe plug is free to turn to a limited extent about a vertical axis, its movement being limited by a lue' m3 which it carries and which moves in a recess n formed in the upper end of the block m2. N indicates a set screw, passing through the section a4 and the block m2 and adapted to bear against the plug m. By this construction the plug, and the devices which it carries, may be lifted from the stand and it may be readily applied to the stand, the downward movement of the plug m being limited by the lug m3 which enters the recess a. The plug m may turn about a vertical axis and may be held, when once adjusted, by the set screw N; In this Way the position of the screen may be changed Without altering the position of the stand.

The outer end of the rod Gr is threaded and engages a boss g on one of the frame sections of the screen. y When it is desired to make the screen as a Whole pprtable, the rod G may be readily detached from the boss of the screen and it may be detached from the clamp D, or the clamp D with the rod may be detached from the post of the stand.

In applying the cover to the framering the boss g is rst passed through the hole f', (Fig. 6) and the edge portion of the cover is progressively folded over the ring in the manner shown in Fig. 6. INhen the cover is completely applied, as shown in Fig. 7, the screen is ready to be secured to the outer end of the linclined rod Gr.

It Will be observed that the cover may be made complete of any suitable fabric and Without change in construction it maybe quickly applied to the frame ring. No stitching lis required or additional fastenings for securing the cover to the frame ring whenthey are associated in the manner above described. The cover may be readily detached from the frame ring by disconnecting the boss g from the rod Gr and then turning the edge portion of the cover back over the frame.

The frame ring, it will be observed, is made'in separable sections in order that it may be reduced in size to .occupy a small space for storage or transport, and it may be associated with the stand sections, supporting rod and cover in the manner indicated in Fig. 8. Any desired number of ring sections may be used and any suitable locking or fastening devicesfor connecting the frame sections may be employed. One of the frame sections is equipped With the boss g above referred to, which may be ap plied to a frame section in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, the boss gvbeing formed on a sleeve y', fitting a frame section. vThe locking devices may be of any suitable kind, The frame sections are preferably all tubular. One frame section contains a block k, formed With a slot ft2, and this section is formed with a hole 7L to receive the catch. rIhe adjacent end of another ring section is provided With aplug t', having a tongue e" adapted to enter the slot or recess h2 in the plug 7a. The section which carries the plug z' also carries a spring catch K, the spring of 1which is vattached at 7c to the section andcarries a lug 7c. adapted to pass into the hole ,a of the adjacent frame section. TvVhen the two adjacent ends of the rframe sectionsare brought together the spring catch engages theV hole/L andthe tongue i enters the recessh?. In thisyvay a very firm joint is made but this joint" may be broken and the ksections separated by merely pressing on the catch. The several sections may be connected in a similar Way and other devices may be employed for locking the sections and for detaching them, my invention principally relating to means broadly considered for making the annular frame in detachable sections so that the screen as a Whole may be collapsed and in providing an improved Way for applying the fabric or cover to the frame.

I claim as my invention 1. A photographers head screen comprising an annular frame and a fabric cover having an edge portion turned over toward the middle of the screen and inclosing the annular frame.

2. A photographers head screen comprising an annular frame` a fabric cover having an elastic band at its periphery and having anedge portion turned over tovvard the middle of the screen and inclosing the annular frame.

3. A photographers head screen comprising a sectional, annular frame provided With a boss and a fabric cover therefor having an edge portion turned over toward the middle of the screen Which is formed Withv a hole to receive the boss carried by the frame and which is adapted to receive a supporting rod.

4.V A pliotographers head screen comprising a sectional, annular frame provided With a boss, a fabric cover therefor having an elastic band at its periphery and an edge portion turned over toward the middle of the screen which is formed with a hole to receive the boss carried by the frame and which is adapted to receive a supporting rod.

5. A photographers head screen comprising an annular frame made in sectionsV having locking devices at their ends and one of Which is provided with a boss adapted to connect with a supporting rod, and a fabric cover for the annular frame having a hole to receive Vthe boss and having also a peripheral portion of the fabric turned over on the frame toward the middle of the screen.

6. A photographers head screen comprising an annular frame made in sections having locking devices at their ends and one of which is provided with a boss adapted to connect with a supporting rod, and a fabric cover for the annular frame having an elastic band in its periphery and a hole to receive the boss and having also a peripheral portion of the fabric turned over on the frame toward the middle of the screen.

A photographers lhead screen comprising a stand composed of collapsible legs some of Which are longer than the others and a collapsible post, a clamp carried by the post, an inclined supporting rod detachably connected with the clamp, a screen proper detachably connected With the inclined supporting rod, and comprising detachable ring sections connected by locking devices, and a fabric cover removably connected With the frame ring.

9. A photographers head screen comprising a stand composed of a collapsible post and collapsible legs some of Which are longer than the others and Which are adapted to extend under the screen proper to prevent the stand from turning over, a clamp carried by the post and which is provided With devices for adjusting it about a vertical axis, an inclined supporting rod detachably connected With the clamp, and a screen proper detachably connected With the inclined supporting rod.

10. A photographers head screen comprising a stand composed of a collapsible post and collapsible legs some of Which are longer than the others, a frame at the bottom of the post to which the inner ends of the legs are pivoted, another frame securedto the post above the frame first mentioned, links connecting the shorter legs with the upper frame and slotted links connected at their inner ends -to said upper frame and connected at their outer ends to the longer legs by pins which extend through the slots of' the links.
