PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR VARIELL, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
CHAIR-TIP.
Patented May 17, 1921.
7 Application filed April 6,1920. Serial No. 371,602.
new and useful Improvements in Chair- Tips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for furniture and more particularly to a device that may be attached to those parts of furniture coming in contact with the floor,
and has for'its primary object the 'provi-,
sion of a simple, inexpensive article that may be readily driven into the furniture and when in place is very difficult to remove owing to the construction of those parts forced into the wood.
An object of the invention is to provide an article that will engage the wood in a more effective manner than similar devices now on the market.
A feature of the invention is the novel manner of forming the prongs so that a very effective grip can be accomplished between the article and the wood so that in case the article is forced into wood in a green state, the device will'not lose itseffective grip withthe wood when the latter dries after being used for a certain length of time. 7
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detail description taken in connection' with the accompanying drawings, wherein: V
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the article. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 isa detail view of a portion thereof. The bodyportion l-of the article is of con cave-convex shape so as to withstand great pressure and to reduce the amount of surface in contact with the floor. The edge portion of the body is constructed toprovide spear shaped prongs 2 and sharp penetrating edges 3 betweenthe pron s as clearly shown in the sectional view. s far as I have proceeded it will be, seen that when the prongs will be deeply inserted in the wood and the penetrating edges 3 will also be driven into the wood for effectively securing the article'to the furniture and reducing the strain to which the prongs are subjected due to the fact that the engagement between the cutting edges and the wood will relieve the prongs of a certain amount of lateral strain. The inner surface of each prong is provided with serrations 4 which also adds materially to the effective grip of the prongs with the wood.
From-the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it should be apparent that I provide a device of simple substantial construction in which the penetrating portions are so constructed and arranged that a more effective grip will be accomplished between the article and the furniture, which isof great advantage when taken into consideration thatthe wood of some furniture is not thoroughly seasoned before it is put upon the market 1 and therefore metallic articles forced into the wood quite often become loosened as soon as the wood becomes properly seasoned. Th s defect is overcome in my device by so shaping the prongs that a locking action is brought about between the prongs and the fibers of the wood.
1. An attachment for furniture legs comprising a metallic concave convex body of substantially circular form having its edges formed with a plurality of equally spaced parallel spear shaped prongs having sharpened ends, the inner faces ofall'the prongs being formed with a plurality of transverse ratchet shaped barbs.
2. An attachment for furniture legs com prising a'substantially circular concave c011- vex metallic body having its edge formed with a series of spaced spearshaped penetrating prongs, the edge of the body between the prongs being cut away parallel with the prongs whereby to define an upper sharp penetrating edge.
In testimony whereof I afiix mvsignature.
