IGE AND SNOW CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17', 1921,
' 7 Application filed June 1, 1920. Serial no. 385,862.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, HENRY W.'BAH EN- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice and Snow Cutting Implements, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relatesto cuttingdevices, and particularly-to devices for cutting ice, snow, or any material of this characten The general object of the invention is to provide a quick acting, economical and labor saving blade, as it may be termed, for outtingand reducingmaterials, especially ice and snow. g
A further object is to provide means whereby athin-blade-like jet of steam may be projected against the material to' be out which will assist the action of-the cutting blade in cutting through the material and do away with the necessity of reciprocating or giving a sawing movement to the blade, and do away with the necessity of applying force thereto. I a
A further object is to'provide a blade of this character comprising two plates disposed in conjoined relation, the plates being separated from each other by a slight space at their edges and the space between the plates being filled with steam or like fluid whereby to cause the steam or heated fluid to be projected through the orifice between the plates and assist the blades in making their way through ice or snow.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a cutting blade constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig.4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6is an end view of the blade.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my improved cutting blade comprises two oppositely disposed, spaced plates 10 and 11, a back 12 which extends along the length of the plates 10 and 11, and filling pieces 13 and 14. The plates 10 and 11 are angular in cross section so that the margins I of the plates remote from the back 12 extend outward and toward each other.- a The confronting edge -it'aces 15- of these plates are beveled so that these confrontingedge faces are very slightly separated'but are parallel to each other. The back 12 is formedby' a stripof suitable material disposed between theurear margins of the plates and spacing these. margins apart. These plates are riveted to thisback 12. At one end the back 12 is extended to'the cutting edges of the plate, as at 14, so as to close the end of the space between the blades, and the blades are riveted, as at 16,.to this extension of the back. The opposite end of the space thereto by a rivet 17 asshown in Fig. 4.
Packing 19*is disposed between the tubular portion of the shank and the outer faces of the plates'lO and 11, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus there is provided an opening 20 which permits steam to pass from the interior of the shank 18 into the space a between the plates. The shank .18 is adapted to be connected to any source of live steam or to other suitable heating fluid. The back 12 is formed by a metal strip preferably about in thickness in actual practice and of a width depending upon the width of the plates 10 and 11, and it will be seen from Fig. 5 that this back 12 is slightly wedgeshaped to conform to the angle of the plates.
Blades constructed in accordance with my invention are adapted to be arranged and mounted on a suitable frame in multiple so as to provide a plurality of parallel or transversely extending blades capable of cutting or reducing a substance in a number of places at the same time, thus, for instance, capable of cutting snow or ice into elongated blocks or into square blocks. Steam under suflicient pressure passes through the hollow shank and into the space a and then escapes as for instance ice, without requiring any sawing movement being applied to the blade or requiring the application 'of' manual" or mechanical force. Of course, .it will be understood that all the joints between the blades and the back or between the filler pieces which close the ends of the'space a are to be properly packed so as to prevent any escape of steam. It will be noted that the steam heats the plates, which constitute the side of the blades, and also escapes, as before stated, in a-thin streambetween the edges of said plates. Of course, it will be understoodthat I do not'wish to be limited to the details of construction illustrated, as it is obviousthat thedevice instead of being formed of a plurality of sectionsmight be formed in one'piece. It is obvious that the tubular shank might be forged with the plates 10 and 11 and the "back piece 12 without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A cutting device of the character described comprising a blade formed to provide a steam chamber extending longitudinally substantially the entire length of the a blade, the bladebeing'tapered to form-a cutting edge, the cutting "edge being formed with a longitudinally extending orifice'communicating with the interior of the steam chamber, and a tubular shank conducting steam to the steam chamber.
- 2. A cutting-blade of 'the character described comprising two thin, metallic plates angu'larly bent to cause the cutting blade 3t0 taper toward its cutting edge, the space between said plates forming a stream chamber and 'saidspace being closed at the back of the plates and at the ends thereof, and a duct for admitting live steam into the space between said plates.
A cu'tting implement of the character described comprising a blade formed of a back piece, opposed plates attached to the back piece and ;-extending therefrom in spaced relation and then extending toward each other to form a cutting blade having a thin cutting edge, the confronting faces of the plates at the cutting edge forming a longitudinallyextending orifice, filling members closing the ends of the space between the plates, and means communicating with said space "by which heated fluid maybe discharged into said space. I 7
4. A cutting implement-of the character described comprising a blade formed of a back piece, opposed platesattached'to the back; piece and extending therefrom in spaced relation and then extendingtoward each other to form a cutting blade having a thincutting edge, the confronting faces of the plates at the cutting edge forming a longitudinally extending orifice, filling members closing the ends of-thespace between the plates, and a tubular shank extending over said back piece and attachedthereto andito theplates and discharging into said space between the plates and -adapted to be connected to a source of live steam.
- Intestimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY BAHRENBURG.
