Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 23,1919. Serial No. 306,196.

To all whom it may concern:

lie it known that I, RAY H. F rrz GERALD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing and Displaying Cartons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams This invention relates to improvements in dispensing and display cartons and more particularly to such as are made of paper or card board-one object of the invention being to provide a carton for dispensing cylindrical articles and to so construct the device that the major bulk of the articles will be held back from the discharge outlet and to provide the carton with a simple and eflicient tray, construction to receive the articles passing out through the discharge opening and thus facilitate the delivery of the articles to the customer.

\Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

The inclined platform of the bottom member will tend to cause the cylindrical articles within the carton to move forwardly, but the upstanding tongues will act as battles to hold back the-major bulk of the articles, permitting only the .front vertical tier of articles to be disposed in a vertical plane in front of that of said tongues. When an article passes through the discharge opening 12, the next article in the front tier will drop into position and an article will move from the top of the next tier to the top of the front tier of articles, and this will continue, as articles pass one after another through the discharge opening, until only two articles remain on the bottom inclined platform. These last two articles will be held back by the tongues 19, and the merchant may cause them to pass over said tongues by into a tray 23, (with which the carton is provided) where it will be exposed to view and from which it can be readily grasped by the purchaser. The article withinthe tray will serve to hold back the article in line with the discharge opening, and when an article is removed from the tray, the next a article will take its place and another article in the first tier will descend and assume a position in line w1th the discharge opening. The tray- 23 is made from a separate blank such as shown in Fig. 3 and 1s dis? posed upon an extension 24 of the bottom member 10 at the lower end of the back 3 of the carton and the end flaps 9 of the

' The tray may be moved inwardly until its front is 'even with the front of the carton and then the bottom extension 24 may be folded upwardly and its free edge portion 24 inserted through the opening 12 and permitted to rest against the inner face of the front of the carton,-thus closing the discharge opening. When the tray is slid into the body of the carton, the bottom of said tray will move under the inclined platform 20 and the ends 27 will slide between the lining member and the sides of the carton.

Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1.'-The combination-with the body of a carton having a dischar e opening, of a tray communicating wit said discharge opening, an inclined bottom platform, and

bafile tongues projecting upwardly from said inclined\bottom platform rearwardly of said discharge opening.

2. The combination with the body portion of a carton, of a separate lining member within said body portion and having a front opening, an inclined bottom integral with said lining member and having a part provided with tongues rojecting upwardly from said inclined bottom I within said lining.

3. The combination with the body of a carton having a discharge opening, of a lining member comprising a-back and sides, the back of said lining member having an extension forming an inclined bottom for the carton, said extension having an integral part provided with tongues passing through and projecting above the upper face of the inclined bottom platform rearwardly from the discharge opening of the carton.

4. A display carton comprising a body portion having a discharge opening and an extension projecting forwardly from its bottom, a tray mounted upon said extension in front of said discharge opening and connected with the body of the carton, said body portion having flaps overlying saidforward extension of the bottom, and a lining member disposed in said body portion forming an inclined bottom platform and tongues projecting through and above the upper face of said platform rearwardly of the discharge opening of the carton.

5. The combination with the body portion of a carton having a discharge opening and a bottom extension below said opening,'of a tray mounted on said bottom extension, said tray made from a single blank and comprising a bottom, a folded front, end members connected with the body of the carton, and tongues projecting from the end members and entering between the folds of the front of the tray.
