This invention `relates to operating `devices for train pipe cut-out cocks, andA more particularly-'to an operating device adapted to be manipulated from the side of the car.
1n order to control communication through the brake pipe of 'afluid pressure brake system, an angle cockis applied to the brake pipe at each end of the car, which is adapted to be opened and closed by means of a handle.-
It has occasionally happened that one of these angle cocks will be closed without the knowledge of the engineer, either by an unauthorized person or accidentally by a trainmanJ with the result that when the engineer attempts to apply the brakes, he 1s unable to do so, and thus serious accidents are liable to occur.
The principal object of my invention is to overcome this dificulty by dispensing wtih angle cocks at the end-s of the car and providing means for operating a cut-out cock located underneath the car from the side of the car.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a central sectional lview of a construction embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a similar view, showing the parts in position for operating the cut-out cock; Fig. Ban end view of the construction shown in Fig. '1; Fig. f1 a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawing, the construction may comprise a cut-out cock device having a casing 1 adapted to be secured underneath the car and preferably adjacent to the center of the car. Within the casing is mounted a plug cock- 2 for controlling communication through a brake pipe 3 and a branch pipe 4, leading to the usual triple valve device on the car.

At an intermediate point, a collar 14 is secured tothe shaft 5 and is provided with va projection 15 adapted to engage notches 16 cut in the casing 1 and corresponding with the different operating positions of the cock.
Applied to each end of the shaft 5 is an operating' handle 17 having a disk 18 provided with beads 19 to indicate the ports of the plug cock, the casing 9 being provided with beads 20 to represent the opposite sides of the brake pipe and the branch pipe. Y
In operation, the pawl 10 at each side of the car normally remains in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that longitudinal movement "of the 'shaft 5 is prevented by engagement of the collar 11 with said pawl.
In this position, the projection 15 on the collar 14C engages one of the notches 16 in the casing 1, according tothe position of the cut-out cock, so that the shaft 5 can not be rotated to operate the cut-out` cock.
If it is desired to operate thecock 2, the trainman, who is provided with the proper key, inserts the key through the escutcheon 12 and turns the pintle 13 and the Apawl 10 so that the collar 11 is free to move longitudinally.
The operator then pulls out on the handle 17, so as to move the collarl and the projection 15 out of enga ement with the notch 16, the gear wheel g sliding on the squared section 6 of the shaft 5.
The shaft 5 may then be rotated so as to turn the cock to they desired position.
When the cut-out cock has been fully turned to the desired operating position, the shaft 5 is pushed inward, so that the projection 15 engages a notch 16 corresponding with the adjusted position of the cock.
The key is then withdrawn, and the pawl l0 drops by gravity, so as to lock the shaft 5 against longitudinal movement and thus prevent the shaft from being rotated, due to the locking of the shaft by engagement of the projection l5 in a notch 16.
The beads 19 and 20Y provide a convenient means by which the trainman can see at a glance what connections have lbeen made by the cut-out cock, since the beads represent the ports in the cut-out cock and the pipe connections controlled thereby.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An operating device for train pipe cutout cocks, comprising a rotatable and longitudinally movable shaft mounted transversely of the car and operatively connected to the rcut-out cock, a member carried by said shaft for locking the same against rotation and adapted to be released upon longitudinal movement of the shaft, a collar secured to the shaft near each end, and a ed transversely of the car, a gear secured to y the plug valve, a gear slidably mounted on said shaft and meshing with the Aother gear, a member secured to the shaft for locking the shaft against rotation, and adapted to be released upon longitudinal movement of the shaft, a collar secured to the shaft adjacent to each end, and a pawl for normally engaging each collar to prevent outward longitudinal movement of the shaft.
3. An operating device for trainlppe cutout cocks, comprising a rotatable and longitudinally movable shaft mounted transversely of the car and operatively connected to the cut-out cock, a member carried by said shaft for locking the same against rotation and adapted to be released upon outward longitudinal movement of the shaft, and means for normally preventing outward longitudinal movement of said shaft.
