To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, TERRENCE J. CLARK, a subject of the King of England, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beater-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bars forbeating engines used in the beating up of pulp and stock for the making of paper and its leading object is to provide a bar which will have a cutting edge of hardened steel and a core of steel and relatively thick coats on its sides composed of a high which'will offer greater resistfrom the action of the acids used in paper making than steel ofi'ers.
Another object of .the invention is to provide a composite bar of this type which will resist fracture due to continued use and to minimize the tendency of the steel to or stallize.

Vith the above and other objects in view this invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the accompanying drawings A designates a composite beater bar which consists of a steel core- B and iron coat C welded to one side of the core B and an iron coat D welded to the opposite side of the core D. The coats-C and D are welded to the core B under the action of a trip hammer 'stock in the beater engine.

By the construction of my beater bar a steel center of great strength can be employed which will provide a durable working edge, while the side faces of the bar are protected against excessive corrosion by the use of relatively thick" coats of high grade iron, which tothe corrosion of the acids used in the digestion of the raw stock employed in paper making. I
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A beater'bar having a steel center and a coat of iron welded to each side thereof,-
one edge portion of the steel center being has greater resistance than steel.

A beater bar consisting of a steel center having a portion deflected to the side thereof to provide a cutting edge, a coat of iron welded to one side of said center and having its outer face substantially flush with the deflected portion' of said center, and a second coat of iron welded to the op osite side of the center and covering the de ected portion of said center.
