To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jones lDUHoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gross, in the parish of De Soto and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deep-VVell Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. v
This invention relates to certain improvements in deep well pumps, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved structure of this general character embodying means whereby the traveling valve may be conveniently withdrawn from its working position without the necessity of pulling out the working barrel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character provided with a novel and improved sand trap whereby the sand is effectively separated and collected.
' An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved pump of this general character embodying a working barrel and a sand trap assembled in a manner whereby said working barrel and sand trap may be removed from working or applied position within the tubing with-- out the necessity of withdrawing said tubmg.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a sand trap, together with means whereby the suction of the traveling valve is not through the trap but through an intake nipple positioned above the trap and through a suction tube or gas anchor depending from the standing valve seat nipple and disposed through the suction tube and partially extending within the upper portion of the sand trap.
Furthermore, it is an object 'of the invention to provide a novel and. improved device of this general character wherein the lower portion of the tubing and the working barrel are each provided with an intake nipple with the inner intake nipple or the nipple carried by the working barrel being provided with straining means.
' A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the'sand trap is adapted to be operatively supported by the working barrel and whereln the lower end portion of the sand trap is provided w1th a normally closed valve, said valve openmg when the sand trap and the working barrel are being lowered into working position and whereby said operation is materially facilitated, and which valve is closed when the sand trap is being extracted and thereby preventing the escape of the sand collected within the trap.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved device of th1s general character wherein the sand trap, when in working position, is substantially inclosed within a housing operatively supported by the tubing and the lower portion of which housing is provided with a nipple adapted to collect the sand when the pump is unseated. 5
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means supported independently of the sand trap for closing or sealing the lower end thereof when thesand trap is in applied position so that fur ther means are provided to prevent suction through the sand trap in addition to the normally closed valve carried by the lower end portion of such trap.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and a1- rangement of the several parts of my improved deep wellpump whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accom panying drawings, wherein:

Threaded within the. lower end of the sand trap 28 is a valve tube 31 having its lower end open and which lower end, when the device is assembled, is closed by the valve 18 hereinbefore referred to and which valve operates to prevent suction upwardly through the sand trap 28.- The tube 31 ex tends upwardly within the lower portion of the trap 28 and said inserted portion is reduced in diameter, as at 32. The reduced portion 32 threads within the lower portion of the valve'cage '33, the upper portion of which is provided with openings 34 in its walls to permit passage therethrough-of the fluid when the pump is being forced downwardly of the tubing T and the parts carried by the lower end portion thereof.
Arranged within the cage 33 is a conventional type of seat 35 with which coacts a ball valve 36. The ball valve 36 is constantly urged toward its seat and maintained in closed position by the spring 37 interposed between the ball valve 36 and the upper end or top of the cage 33. The valve seat 35 is clamped into position by the inner end of the tube 31 and an internal shoulder 38 arranged within the cage 33.
The valve 36 is for the purpose of closing the bottom of the sand trap 28 when said trap is being pulled out, thereby retaining in said trap Whatever sand and mud may have been collected in said trap. The valve 36 is also of advantage when the sand trap is being inserted within the tubing T as during such period the valve 36 will move into an open position and thus allow a free passage of the fluid through the barrel structure.
Threaded within'the lower portion of the standing valve seat nipple 24 is the upper end portion of a suction tube or gas anchor 39 which extends axially through the per forated nipple 27 and a slight distance inwardly of the upper end portion of the sand trap 28.
The perforations 40 in the nipple 27 preferably comprise elongated slots equidistantly spaced circumferenti-a'lly around the nipple and extending longitudinally therec f. The slots 40 extend. along the major portion of the nipple 427 with the lower ends of said slots terminating as close to the lower end of-sa-id'nipple, as the threaded lower end portion of said nipple will permit.
Threaded within the u per end portion of the standing valve seat nlpple 24 is the cage 41 for the standing valve 42 of a conventional type and which coacts with the seat 43 arranged within the nipple 24 and clamped in position within the inserted end of the cage 41 and an internal annular shoulder 44 provided within the nipple 24.
The traveling valve V hereinbefore re 'ferred to is of a conventional type and includes the leather cups or gaskets 45. In threaded engagement with the upper end portion of the traveling valve V in a well known manner is the lower end portion of the valve stem 46. The lower portion 46 of the stem 46 is angular in cross section while the upper portion 46 is circular. The stem 46 works through a lift cage 47 operatively engaged with the upper end portion of the working barrel B preferably through the instrumentality of left hand threads. The lower portion of the bore 48 of the cage 47 is angular in cross section to snugly receive the angular lower portion 46 of the stem 46 while the upper portion of said bore of the cage is cylindrical and through which the cylindrical portion 46 of the stem 46 is snugly disposed.
The upper end portion of the stem 46 is adapted to be coupled, as at 47 in a conventional manner withthe lower end portion of a pump rod 50. Under normal conditions, the strokes of the rod 50 permit the valve V to have its requisite reciprocation within the barrel B but when it is desired to withdraw the valve V to renew the leather cups or gaskets 45 or to otherwise repair the valve V, the rod 50 is pulled upwardly until the angular portion 46 of the stem 46 engages within the angular portion of the bore 48 of the cage 47 and upon requisite rotation being given to the rod 50, the cage 47 will be disengaged from the barrel B whereupon the valve V can be easily removed and without the necessity of withdrawing the remaining structural elements of the mechanism positioned within the tubing T and the parts carried thereby.
With the valve V removed, the working barrel and the sand trap 28 can'be readily removed by engaging within the upper or open end of the barrel B a suitable fishing tool and which removal of the barrel and trap is particularly desirable in order to clean the trap of the sand collected therein. This removal of the barrel and the trap, in practice, should be effected daily and particularly when the pump is employed in connection with an unusually sandy well and, in practice, it has been found that the working barrel B and the parts carried thereby may be removed and replaced within about three hours time.
When the. pump is assembled and in work ing condition, the suction created by the traveling or working valve V draws the fluid inwardly through the nipples 2 and 27 and upwardly through the suction tube 39 and during which time the sand entering within the nipple 27 will be collected within the trap 28. g
\Vhen the working barrel B and the parts carried thereby are raised or removed from working position, the plates 5 close the perforations 3 so that fluid is prevented from flowing out of the tubing T' so that when the working barrel and its parts are returned to working position, it will only, require a few strokes of the working or traveling valve V to obtain the desired'discharge of the fluid at the top of the well.
It will also be understood that when desired the rod may be employed to pull out the complete pump mechanism and in which event the lift cage47 is not disengaged from the upper end portion of the barrel B. When the workingbarrel andits coacting parts are removed, the floating sand carried by the fluid within the tubing will settle in the bull plug nipplelQ and at infrequent intervals, say about once a month, the tubing T is removed so that the bull plug nipple 12 may be emptied of the sand collected thereby.
It will beunderstood that the requisite suction through the suction tube 39 is assured by the air-tight joint or seal eflected by the leather rings or gaskets26 hereinbefore referred to.
' The form of invention illustrated in Fig. 10 of the accompanying drawings is substantially the same as has hereinbefore been set forth except that the working-or traveling valve V and the coacting working bar-- rel B are positioned below the air-tight joint or seal 26. The lift cage 47 is operatively engaged with the upper end portion of the nipple 51 comprised in the airtight or seal joint 26 hereinbefore referred to while the upper end portion of the work: ing barrelBf is operatively engaged with the lower portion of said nipple.
- From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a deep well pump constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles andsplrit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several-parts herein shown in car-- rying out my invention inpractice except as hereinafter claimed.

In a deep well pump,"in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end ef the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and the coupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, and a sand trap operatively supported by the first named nipple and extending below the suctiontube, said suction tube partially extend ing within the sand trap.
3. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a couplingsecured to the lower .end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealin the space between the nlpple and the coup ing,
an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, a sand trap 0p-' eratively supported by the first named nipple and extending below the suction tube,
the lower end of the sand trap being open, and a valve for normally closing said opening. i

and moving inwardly thereof into open a valve for normally closing said opening, said valve being carried by the sand trap and moving inwardly thereof into open position, and a valve supported independently of the trap for closing the lower end thereof.
6. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and the coupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, said intake nipple being provided with a plurality of series of inlet openings, the openings of each series being in alinement, and an inwardly opening check valve coacting with each of said series of openings.
7. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured tothe lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and the coupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction, tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, said intake nipple being provided with a plurality of series of inlet openings, the openings of each series being in alinement, and an inwardly opening check valve coacting'with each of said series of openings, each of said check valves comprising an elongated resilient strip anchored at one end.
8. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and thecoupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one-end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, said intake nipple being provided with a plurality of series of inlet openings, the openings of each series being in alinement, an inwardly opening check'valve coacting with each of said series of openings, each of said check valves comprising an elongated resilient strip anchored at one end, and means coacting with the opposite end of the strip for limiting its opening movement.
9.. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and the coupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, said intake nipple being provided with a plurality of series of inlet openings, the'openings of each series being in alinement, an inwardly opening check valve coacting with each of said series of openings,- each of said check valves comprising an elongated resilient strip anchored at one end, and amember disposed across the opposite end portion of the strip, said end portion of the strip being provided with a flange for contact with said member to limit the opening movement of the strip.
10. In a deep well pump, in combination with the tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a nipple disposed through the coupling, means for sealing the space between the nipple and the coupling, an intake nipple secured to the coupling, a suction tube extending through the nipple and having one end portion engaged within the bore of the first nipple, said intake nipple being provided with a plurality of series of inlet openings, the openings of each series being in alinement, and an inwardly opening check valve coacting with each of said series of openings, each of said check valves comprising an elongated resilient strip anchored at one end, the inner face of the intake nipple being provided with grooves in each of which one ofthe strips is seated.
11. A deep well pump comprising, in combination, a tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a stand valve nipple mounted within the coupling, a working barrel engaged with said nipple, a traveling valve working within the barrel, an intake nipple secured to the lower portion of the coupling and provided with perforations in its wall, inwardlyopening check valves coacting with the openings in said intake nipple, a second intake nipple secured to the lower portion of the stand nipple and extending through the first named intake nipple, said second named intake nipple being provided in its walls with openings, I
means for sealing the space between the lower end portions of both of said intake nipples, a suction tube having one end portion engaged within the standing valve nipple and extending through the second named. intake nipple,- and a sand trap supported by the lower end portion of the second named intake nipple.
12. A deep well pump comprising, in combination, a tubing, a coupling secured to the lower end of the tubing, a stand valve nipple mounted within the coupling, a working barrel engaged with said nipple, a traveling valve working within the barrel, an intake nipple secured to the lower portion of the coupling and provided with perforations in its wall, inwardly openingcheck valves coacting with the openings in said intake nipple, a second intake nipple securedv to the lower portion of the stand nipple and extending through the first named intake nipple, said second named intake nipple being provided in itswalls with openings, aseat coupling supported by the lower end of the first nam'ed intake nipple, a sand trap nipple securedto the lower end portion of the sec ond named intake nipple, a gasket held in f lower end of the tubing, a stand valve ni ple,
