ROBE-RAIL.

lie it known that T, DANIEL O. HENDER- e033, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Denver, county of Denver, State of Colorado, have invented new and useful improvements in Robe-Rails, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in robe rails and the object is to provide means whereby a robe may be locked or fastened against removal.

The invention consists of a main robe rail and a supplemental rail capable of being moved with respect to the main rail for locking or fastening a robe between the two rails. The auxiliary or supplemental rail is. provided with means cooperating with locking means carried by the main rail for securely locking the auxiliary rail to the main rail and thereby securely holding the robe between the two rails. The robe therefore can not be removed from the robe rail until the lock has been operated for releasing the supplemental rail and when the supplemental rail has been released it may be moved away from the main rail and the robe withdrawn from between the rails.

Th invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

The main robe ail A is provided at each end with two hollow arms 1, 1. The inner ends of arms 1 are connected in any suitable manner to brackets 2, 2, for fastening the rail to the back or rear seat of a vehicle such an automobile.

arms 1 through longitudinal slots 5 formed on the inner walls of the arms 1. The stems or shanks of the auxiliary rail 3 are inserted within the hollow arms 1 prior to the fastening of the brackets 2 to the arms so that the rail is securely fastened to arms and can not be removed.

The outer longitudinal faces of the shanks are provided with teeth 6. The teeth 6 of the rail 3 are adapted to be engaged by tumblers 7 of locks 8 when the rail is moved to its outer position or toward the rail A for the purpose of looking or fastening a robe between the two rails. The locks 8 are cast or formed integrally with the arms 1 and are located at one side of the arms at their outer ends. 911 the opposite side of the arms from the lock are sleeves or extensions 9 in which the ends of the main rail A are received, the ends of the rails being welded or fastened in the sleeves 9. The tumblers 7 of the lock 8 project into the hollow arms 1 and when the shanks a of the supplemental rail 3 are moved toward the outer ends of the arms 1 the teeth 6 of the shanks will be engaged by the tumblers and the rail 3 will be held against movement away from the rail A. The rail 8 may be moved close to the rail A but it can. not be moved away from the rail A until keys 10 are inserted in the locks 8 for retracting the tumblers from engagement with the teeth 6 of the shanks e of the rail 3. When this has been performed the rail 3 is free to be moved rearwardly of the arms 1 and the robe can then be moved from between the rails.

The rail is provided with a plurality of t'shaped projections 11 having teeth 12 on their inner surfaces and the rail A is provided with a plurality of projections 13. The projections 13 of the rail A and the projections 11 of the rail 3 are preferably arranged so that they will not be directly opposite, but are so arranged that when the two rails are brought together the projections of the rail in will be located between the projections of the rail 3 thereby causing an impingement of the robe or other article to be fastened between the rails. The projections 11 are so shaped that they will cause the article confined between the rails to closely adhere to the rail A as therail A is of less diameter than the distance of the two prongs between the ii-shaped projections 11.

aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A robe rail comprising a main rail, hollow arms connected to the main rail and having longitudinal slots therein, a supdlemental rail extending through and capable of movement in said slots of the arms, shanks on the supplemental rail slidable in the hollow arms and means for engaging said shanks for holding the supplemental rail against movement away from the main rail. I

2. A robe rail comprising a main rail, hollow arms connected to the main rail and having longitudinal slots therein, a supplemental rail slidablymounted in said slots of the arms, shanks on the supplemental rail slidably mounted in the hollow arms, teeth on the shanks, and locks carried by the arms provided with means for engaging the teeth of the shanks for locking the supplemental rail against movement.
